It continues the Elder Scrolls world and follows the events leading up to Skyrim. For something less closely related, choose Fallout 4 for another Bethesda RPG in a different setting, or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for open-world fantasy role-playing. None is a one-to-one substitute: the right pick depends on whether you want Tamriel, free exploration, side quests, or a different kind of combat and storytelling.
Start with Skyrim for the closest follow-up
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Skyrim Special Edition is the natural next stop if the part of Oblivion Remastered you want again is exploring an Elder Scrolls region, building a character, and following quests in Tamriel. Bethesda’s beginner guide places Oblivion before the events of Skyrim, making this the closest recommendation by franchise and setting—not a claim that the games play identically. Bethesda’s guide to Oblivion Remastered and its game catalog provide the official context.

Pick Skyrim if you want another journey in the same fictional world. If you mainly want a first-person RPG sandbox but are ready to leave fantasy behind, Fallout 4 is a better match for that particular preference.
Choose by the part of Oblivion you want more of
| Game | Best fit if you want | How it differs from Oblivion Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition | Another Elder Scrolls setting and RPG | The closest franchise continuation, but a different game rather than a direct remake or identical experience. |
| Fallout 4 | A Bethesda RPG and room to explore | It trades fantasy and Tamriel for a different fictional setting; it matches the broad developer-RPG appeal, not the fantasy setting. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Open-world fantasy, exploration, and quests | It is a fantasy RPG alternative, not an Elder Scrolls-style first-person sandbox. |
| Avowed | A newer fantasy RPG option | It shares the broad fantasy-RPG category, but the available official listing does not establish it as a close Oblivion equivalent. |
These are useful category distinctions, not an objective similarity ranking. Microsoft’s Xbox RPG listing groups titles such as Fallout 3, Oblivion, Skyrim Special Edition, and The Witcher 3 under role-playing games. PC Gamer’s open-world roundup likewise includes several of these games, while GamesRadar’s open-world RPG roundup frames exploration and side quests as part of Oblivion Remastered’s appeal. Genre lists can point to candidates, but they do not mean the games share the same structure or feel.

For another Bethesda-style RPG, pick Fallout 4
Fallout 4
Fallout 4 makes sense if what you miss is the broad Bethesda-RPG rhythm of exploring a large setting, finding quests away from the main path, and developing a character. Its world is not Tamriel, and it is not a fantasy adventure; the overlap is the role-playing and exploration framework rather than the setting or combat fantasy.
Choose it when you are willing to trade magic, monsters, and Elder Scrolls lore for a different world. If the fantasy setting matters more than the Bethesda connection, consider The Witcher 3 instead.

For open-world fantasy and questing, pick The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a strong alternative if you want a fantasy world to travel through and a steady stream of quests, but it should not be mistaken for another Oblivion. It is a different role-playing experience, with its own combat and storytelling approach; the useful overlap is broad open-world fantasy, not an identical first-person sandbox or character role-playing format.

Go with The Witcher 3 if fantasy exploration and questing are the priorities. Choose Skyrim when staying in the Elder Scrolls setting is more important.

Where Avowed fits—and where it does not
Avowed
Avowed is another option to consider if you want a newer fantasy RPG, but the available evidence supports it as a broad category alternative, not a close match to Oblivion Remastered. Its official Xbox listing identifies it as a purchasable game; that alone does not establish how closely its world structure, quest emphasis, combat, or role-playing systems resemble Oblivion. Check the Xbox game listing for its current listing details.
Check the platform and edition before choosing
Similarity does not guarantee that a particular game or edition is available on your device. Bethesda’s beginner guide lists Oblivion Remastered for Xbox Series X|S, Game Pass, PlayStation 5, and PC; that is a statement about Oblivion Remastered, not about the availability of the other recommendations. Store listings, subscriptions, and regional availability can change, so check the platform’s current listing for the exact game and edition you plan to play. Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered page also carries current title information.
