Find the best couch co-op games for one Nintendo Switch, organized by group size and play style, with controller and Switch Lite caveats.

The best local co-op game on Nintendo Switch is Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. It is easy to pick up, supports up to four players in its main campaign, and works equally well for families, mixed-skill groups, and friends who enjoy a little friendly competition. For exactly two players, It Takes Two is the better choice; for a larger gathering, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge supports up to six people on one console.

This list uses “local co-op” in the strict couch-multiplayer sense: cooperative play on one Nintendo Switch console and one shared screen. It does not treat local wireless between multiple Switch systems or online multiplayer as the same thing. Player counts are also mode-specific, so an eight-player mode in Luigi’s Mansion 3, for example, does not mean that eight people can play through its full story together.

Quick comparison: the best Switch couch co-op games

There is no meaningful single ranking that puts a two-player story adventure directly against a six-player arcade brawler. The table below is organized around the group you actually have, the kind of co-operation you want, and the compromises attached to each game.

Game Local players on one system Best for Co-op style Intensity Key caveat
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury 1–4 in 3D World; 1–2 in Bowser’s Fury Best overall Platforming, shared progression, friendly competition Medium Bowser’s Fury is only two-player
It Takes Two 2 Best two-player campaign Story adventure, puzzles, coordinated abilities Medium Built for exactly two players
Overcooked! 2 1–4 Best four-player chaos Timed task management and communication High Exciting, but often stressful
Luigi’s Mansion 3 2 in the story; up to 8 in ScareScraper Best flexible family option Adventure co-op plus separate multiplayer challenges Low–medium The eight-player mode is not the campaign
Kirby and the Forgotten Land 1–2 Best for younger or newer players Accessible platforming with an assisting second player Low Bandana Waddle Dee does not play identically to Kirby
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge 1–6 Best large-group game Arcade beat-’em-up action High More repetitive than a story-driven adventure
Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! 2-character core co-op Best puzzle game Communication, shape-cutting, spatial problem-solving Low–medium Controller and mode requirements vary for larger setups
Pikmin 4 1–2 Best strategy-oriented co-op Assisted exploration and resource management Low–medium The second player assists the main expedition
Unravel Two 1–2 Best atmospheric two-player game Quiet platforming and linked-character puzzles Low–medium Handheld mode is single-player only
Moving Out 2 1–4 Best physics-based party game Coordinated carrying, throwing, and improvisation High Physics-driven mistakes are the point
Fling to the Finish 1–8 in local split-screen play Best unusual team race Paired players tethered by an elastic rope High Teams cooperate while competing against other teams

The player counts above refer to same-console modes, not the maximum number available through online or local-wireless play. Nintendo’s game listings also warn that additional accessories may be required, depending on the game, mode, and number of players.

1. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury: best overall

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the safest recommendation when you do not yet know exactly what the group wants. The main Super Mario 3D World campaign supports one to four players on a single Switch. Everyone moves through the same colorful levels, helping one another reach the goal—or racing to grab power-ups, coins, and the highest score.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Its controls are immediately understandable, but the levels still offer enough room for experienced players to experiment. That combination makes it particularly good for families and mixed-skill groups: a stronger player can help recover a missed jump, while newer players can participate without needing to learn a complicated control scheme.

Bowser’s Fury is a separate experience with a crucial limitation: local play is limited to two people. The first player controls Mario and the second controls Bowser Jr., who supports Mario during the open-world adventure. It is excellent two-player co-op, but it is not a four-player extension of the main campaign.

If you are buying the default pick, compare the current physical listing for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury for Nintendo Switch with the digital version before purchasing. Edition, seller, price, and stock can change, so confirm exactly what the current listing contains.

2. It Takes Two: best two-player story adventure

It Takes Two is designed specifically for two-player co-operation. Its entire campaign assumes two participants, with each character receiving abilities that complement the other. Puzzles, platforming sections, and set pieces regularly require players to communicate and combine what their characters can do.

That makes it the strongest choice here for a couple, two close friends, or an adult-and-older-child pairing looking for a substantial campaign rather than a sequence of short party rounds. The game keeps changing its activities and mechanics, so it feels more like a journey than a collection of repeatable mini-games.

The Nintendo Switch version supports two players on one system, as well as local wireless and online play. The Friend’s Pass can allow an invited co-op partner to join without separately purchasing the full game in supported situations, but account, platform, and access requirements still apply. It is also important to understand the basic limitation: this is a two-player game, not a four-player group option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a purchase search, It Takes Two Nintendo Switch is the exact game to check, but verify whether a current commercial listing is a physical copy, a digital code, or a used version. Do not assume that every result described as a “copy” is a cartridge.

3. Overcooked! 2: best for four-player chaos

Overcooked! 2 supports one to four players on a single system and turns a kitchen into a communication test. Players divide jobs, prepare ingredients, cook orders, wash dishes, and navigate kitchens that change under pressure. The challenge is not simply completing tasks; it is deciding who does what before the next order arrives.

It is one of the best games for a group that wants immediate, noisy, replayable couch multiplayer. Mistakes are usually funny, and a team can improve by learning how to divide responsibilities. The same qualities can make it stressful rather than relaxing, especially when players disagree about priorities or when a kitchen layout disrupts a routine that was working.

When shopping, distinguish Overcooked! 2 Nintendo Switch from bundles such as Overcooked! All You Can Eat or editions that include additional downloadable content. The extra content may be worthwhile, but it is not the same product as the base game.

4. Luigi’s Mansion 3: best for story co-op plus larger groups

Luigi’s Mansion 3 offers an unusually useful split between a two-player story experience and a larger multiplayer mode. In the main adventure, one player controls Luigi and the other controls Gooigi. Gooigi can perform related tasks and help Luigi through the hotel’s puzzles and encounters.

After that, a larger group can use ScareScraper, which supports up to eight players through single-system, local-wireless, or online configurations. ScareScraper focuses on short multiplayer challenges rather than letting eight people move through the full story together.

That distinction makes Luigi’s Mansion 3 a strong choice for a family with two regular players and occasional guests. A pair can work through the campaign, while a larger gathering has a separate activity available. If your priority is eight-player couch action from the first minute, however, the game is less direct than Shredder’s Revenge or Fling to the Finish.

5. Kirby and the Forgotten Land: best accessible platformer

Kirby and the Forgotten Land supports one to two players on one console. The second player controls Bandana Waddle Dee and helps Kirby through the adventure. This is supportive co-op rather than a perfectly symmetrical two-character campaign: Kirby remains the central character, while Bandana Waddle Dee has a different role and move set.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

That structure is a virtue for younger children, beginners, or mixed-ability pairs. The game is forgiving in presentation, and its lower difficulty option makes it easier to keep progressing without turning every missed jump or enemy encounter into a roadblock. Nintendo also offers a demo containing sections of two-player local co-op, which can be useful before committing to the full game.

Choose it when the goal is to make co-op welcoming. Choose It Takes Two or Unravel Two instead if both players want equal control over fully independent characters and a more demanding partnership.

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge: best six-player game

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge supports one to six players on a single Switch. That six-player limit makes it one of the most practical choices for a crowded living room: everyone can join the same straightforward action session instead of taking turns or splitting into separate pairs.

The side-scrolling beat-’em-up format is easy to understand. Move forward, fight waves of enemies, use character attacks, and work together through the stage. It captures the rhythm of classic arcade action and is especially effective when the group wants to start playing immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is variety. Its combat loop is more arcade-like and repetitive than the campaign structure in It Takes Two or Super Mario 3D World. That is not a flaw if the group wants accessible action, but players seeking evolving puzzles and story scenarios should choose a different game.

For a large gathering, check the current listing for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge Nintendo Switch and confirm whether it is the standard edition or a bundle that includes downloadable content.

7. Snipperclips: best cooperative puzzle game

Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! is built around two paper characters cutting one another into useful shapes. Players rotate, position, and trim their characters to fit outlines, activate mechanisms, and solve spatial puzzles. The core challenge is not reaction speed; it is explaining an idea clearly and then discovering whether the other player can help make it work.

It is an excellent choice for pairs who prefer communication and experimentation to combat or timed tasks. One player can also control both characters alone, which makes it possible to learn the basic logic before inviting someone else to join.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two detached Joy-Con controllers are especially convenient for the standard two-player setup, although accessory requirements can vary with the selected mode and number of players. For that reason, check the game’s current controller guidance rather than assuming that every multiplayer configuration works with the same setup.

8. Pikmin 4: best strategy-oriented co-op

Pikmin 4 supports one to two players on one system and provides a slower, more strategic alternative to frantic party games. The second player helps the main explorer and can direct a separate on-screen pointer, making it possible to contribute to the expedition without taking over the primary character’s entire role.

This arrangement suits players who enjoy planning routes, managing resources, and solving problems at a measured pace. It is a good fit for a parent and child or two players who want to talk through decisions instead of reacting to a timer.

The game also includes Dandori Battle, but that mode is competitive rather than the same kind of cooperative expedition. Buy Pikmin 4 for co-op if one player is happy to lead the main adventure while the other provides meaningful assistance—not if both players require completely independent campaigns.

  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

9. Unravel Two: best quieter two-player platformer

Unravel Two features two Yarny characters who cooperate through platforming and environmental puzzles. The linked characters create a natural reason to coordinate movement, manage momentum, and decide when one player should support the other.

Its atmosphere is gentler than Overcooked! 2 or Moving Out 2, making it a good choice for a relaxed evening or for players who want couch co-op without constant shouting. The challenges still require coordination, but the game’s tone is more reflective than competitive.

There is an important hardware caveat: Nintendo identifies handheld mode as single-player only. Shared-screen co-op therefore requires a compatible TV or tabletop arrangement with suitable controllers; it is not simply a matter of handing a Switch Lite to a second player. Switch Lite owners should check the game and hardware requirements particularly carefully before buying.

10. Moving Out 2: best physics-based party chaos

Moving Out 2 supports one to four players locally. Its co-op loop is built around moving furniture through increasingly absurd environments: players carry objects together, throw them through windows, work around obstacles, and improvise when a plan collapses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a natural companion to Overcooked! 2, but the source of the chaos is different. Overcooked! is driven primarily by timed kitchen tasks, while Moving Out 2 is driven by physics, awkward furniture, and the need to find a workable route. The game’s assist mode and accessibility options make it easier to recommend to mixed-skill groups.

It also offers online multiplayer and cross-play features, but those are separate from the local one-console experience covered here. Choose it for slapstick problem-solving and comic mistakes rather than a tightly scripted story.

11. Fling to the Finish: best unusual team-based race

Fling to the Finish supports local co-op and local split-screen races, with one to eight players listed for single-system play. Its defining mechanic connects two players with an elastic rope. Each teammate must fling, swing, and steer in relation to the other instead of treating the course as a normal solo platforming track.

The result is a useful hybrid for groups that want competition without eliminating co-operation. Teams of two work together, then race against other teams. It is particularly good when the group has already played the usual cooking, platforming, and beat-’em-up recommendations and wants something structurally different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tethered movement can be chaotic to learn, so it is best approached as a novelty party game rather than a calm introductory co-op experience. The large player count is the attraction; the unusual controls are also the main source of frustration.

How to choose the right one for your group

  • Two players and a full campaign: Choose It Takes Two. It is the most deliberately co-operative and story-focused option.
  • Two players with younger or less experienced players: Choose Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Its assisting second-player role and forgiving presentation reduce the barrier to entry.
  • Two players who like puzzles: Choose Snipperclips. It rewards talking through ideas more than memorizing combat controls.
  • Two players who want atmosphere: Choose Unravel Two, provided your shared-screen setup is compatible.
  • Two players who enjoy strategy: Choose Pikmin 4. The second player contributes to the expedition without requiring fast reflexes.
  • Three or four players: Start with Super Mario 3D World, Overcooked! 2, or Moving Out 2. Mario is the broadest all-purpose choice; the other two are more deliberately chaotic.
  • Five or six players: Choose Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. It is the clearest large-group action recommendation.
  • Seven or eight players: Check Luigi’s Mansion 3 for ScareScraper or Fling to the Finish for team-based racing. Neither should be confused with an eight-player story campaign.
  • A group that dislikes pressure: Prefer Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Snipperclips, Pikmin 4, or Unravel Two over the timed chaos of Overcooked! 2.

One Switch does not mean one controller

Before buying, check the controller requirements for the exact game mode you intend to use. A console’s ability to display local multiplayer does not guarantee that its included controllers are sufficient or comfortable for every group.

For two players

A pair of detached Joy-Con controllers may be enough for supported control schemes. Snipperclips is a particularly convenient example because each player can use one Joy-Con in its standard two-player setup. Games with more complex controls may feel better with a full controller per player, even when a single Joy-Con technically works.

For three or four players

Additional Joy-Con or Pro Controllers can make a substantial practical difference. They are not automatically required for every game on this list, and Nintendo’s requirements vary by title and mode, but a group should not assume that the two controllers included with a standard Switch are an ideal four-player setup.

If you are expanding beyond two players, extra Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers are the most direct accessory to investigate. Check whether the current product listing is a single controller, a pair, or a color-specific bundle before ordering.

A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is an optional comfort upgrade for longer sessions. It is not required for every game here, and it does not solve the need for enough separate controllers when three, four, or more people are playing.

Switch Lite considerations

Switch Lite owners need to be more careful. The system does not provide detachable Joy-Con, and some local multiplayer games are awkward on its built-in handheld screen even when compatible wireless controllers can be paired. Plan around the game’s controller requirements and the practical problem of giving everyone a view of the same screen.

Unravel Two is the clearest warning in this list because its official listing identifies handheld mode as single-player only. Do not buy it expecting two people to play together in ordinary handheld mode on a Switch Lite.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Digital-library storage

A microSD card does not improve multiplayer performance and is not a requirement for local co-op. It becomes relevant only if you are building a large digital library of party games. If storage is the problem you are solving, compare a Nintendo Switch microSD card with the console’s available space and choose capacity based on your broader library rather than on one co-op purchase.

Why Stardew Valley is not included

Stardew Valley is often described simply as a multiplayer or co-op game, but that description does not satisfy the strict definition used here. On the original Nintendo Switch listing, the multiplayer information specifies one player for single-system play and one to four players for online play. The farm multiplayer experience is therefore online on that version, not simultaneous couch co-op on one console.

That distinction matters because search results and player discussions frequently use “multiplayer” broadly. Stardew Valley can be a good online co-op recommendation, but it should not appear in a list claiming that every game supports same-console local co-op on the original Switch.

Buying and edition checks

Prices, discounts, physical stock, downloadable content, bundle names, and Nintendo eShop availability change frequently. Check the current product page immediately before buying, and confirm all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Whether the listing is physical, digital, or used.
  • Whether it is the base game or a bundle with DLC.
  • The number of players supported by the particular local mode you want.
  • Whether extra controllers are required.
  • Whether the game’s advertised maximum player count applies to one console or only to online or local-wireless play.

For example, an eight-player figure for Luigi’s Mansion 3 refers to ScareScraper, while the story supports two-player co-op. Likewise, the four-player figure for Super Mario 3D World does not carry over to the two-player-only Bowser’s Fury section.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best local co-op game on one Nintendo Switch?

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is the best all-purpose choice. Its main campaign supports up to four players, its controls are approachable, and it accommodates both co-operation and friendly competition. For exactly two players who want a story campaign, It Takes Two is the better fit.

Can Stardew Valley be played in local co-op on one Nintendo Switch?

Not on the original Switch version in the strict couch co-op sense. Its listing specifies one player for single-system play and up to four players online, so its farm multiplayer requires online play rather than simultaneous local play on one console.

Which Switch games support six or more local players?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge supports up to six players on one system. Luigi’s Mansion 3 supports up to eight in its ScareScraper mode, not in the main story, and Fling to the Finish supports local split-screen play for up to eight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Nintendo Switch Lite owners play local co-op?

It depends on the game, controllers, and the shared-screen arrangement. Switch Lite has no detachable Joy-Con, so extra compatible controllers may be necessary, and some games are awkward on its small built-in screen. Unravel Two specifically identifies handheld mode as single-player only.

The Bottom Line

For most groups, buy Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Choose It Takes Two for a focused two-player campaign, Overcooked! 2 or Moving Out 2 for four-player disorder, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge when five or six people need to play together. Confirm the exact mode, edition, and controller requirements before purchasing—especially if the group includes Switch Lite owners.
