There is no special “PS5 Prism” SSD. Sony’s Prism Collection changes the appearance of selected PS5 covers and DualSense controllers; it does not create a new console, storage connector or SSD specification. For more games you can play directly, install a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with effective cooling. The officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P with its integrated heatsink is the simplest documented fit. Samsung’s 990 PRO with Heatsink and the specifically identified 2TB Corsair MP600 PRO LPX are credible alternatives based on their manufacturers’ compatibility claims. These are specification-based recommendations, not hands-on rankings or current-price winners.
What does “PS5 Prism storage” actually mean?
“PS5 Prism” refers to Sony’s transparent-design Prism Collection, not a new PS5 hardware revision. Sony describes the collection as giving the PS5 console and DualSense controllers “a fresh new look”; the announcement covers Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray accessories, with preorders announced for November 10, 2026 and launch beginning February 4, 2027. The announcement does not introduce a Prism SSD or change the M.2 expansion rules for an existing PS5. Read Sony’s Prism announcement.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Your console’s CFI model, free space and the games you want installed determine the storage decision. A Prism cover is cosmetic. It neither increases capacity nor changes which internal drive will fit. If you are buying a forthcoming cover, check its eventual product listing against your console’s CFI model number; Sony says that number is printed on the underside, and the October announcement does not establish that every cover fits every original, Slim or Pro chassis.
Which M.2 SSD should you buy for a PS5?
For the least ambiguous installation, choose the WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink in the capacity you actually need. Sony lists the SN850P as an officially licensed storage option, and its integrated cooling means you do not have to match a bare drive with a separate heatsink. Sandisk’s December 2025 data sheet lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB heatsink variants, with claimed sequential-read speeds of up to 7,300MB/s for 1TB–4TB and 7,200MB/s for 8TB. The listed heatsink assembly is 80 × 24.46 × 9.89mm. Those are Sandisk specifications, not PS5 gameplay measurements. See Sony’s licensed-accessories page.

The Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink is a manufacturer-described PS5-compatible PCIe 4.0 model. Samsung lists up to 7,450MB/s sequential read and US capacities of 1TB, 2TB and 4TB. Select the heatsink version specifically; do not assume dimensions or clearance from a different 990 PRO SKU. Check Samsung’s 990 PRO with Heatsink listing.
For a clearly identified 2TB option, Corsair specifies the MP600 PRO LPX 2TB (CSSD-F2000GBMP600PLP) as PS5/PS5 Pro compatible. It is an M.2 2280 drive with a preinstalled low-profile aluminum heat spreader and a claimed sequential-read speed of up to 7,100MB/s. Corsair’s product copy inconsistently mentions expansion up to 4TB and an 8TB option, so this recommendation is limited to the identified 2TB SKU rather than assuming capacities that the page does not consistently document. See Corsair’s product specifications.

A higher sequential-read number does not prove shorter game loading or better gameplay on a PS5. Sony warns that even a drive meeting its listed specifications may not deliver the same performance as the console’s internal storage. Compare the exact capacity and SKU, assembled dimensions, warranty terms and a freshly checked price per usable gigabyte before buying; no current price or independent head-to-head ranking is established here.
What are the PS5’s exact M.2 SSD requirements?
Sony’s support guide is the authority for fit. The drive must be a PCI-Express Gen4x4 NVMe M.2 device using Socket 3 and a Key M connector. Supported capacities run from 250GB to 8TB. Supported lengths are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. M.2 SATA drives are not supported; Sony states plainly, “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.” Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 devices are supported.
- Recommended sequential read: 5,500MB/s or faster.
- Maximum assembled width: 25mm, including the cooling structure.
- Maximum assembled thickness: 11.25mm overall.
- Clearance above the circuit board: no more than 8.0mm.
- Clearance below the circuit board: no more than 2.45mm.
- Cooling: effective heat dissipation is required.
Measure the complete assembly, not just the naked PCB. A bare SSD plus aftermarket heatsink must remain within every limit. If a drive already has an integrated heatsink, do not stack a second heatsink on it. A licensed label is convenient, but it does not replace checking the installed drive’s dimensions and capacity against Sony’s rules. Review Sony’s complete M.2 installation and specification guide.

How much capacity do you need?
Start with Settings > Storage on your own console. That shows how quickly the internal drive is filling and whether your library needs a modest extension or a large permanent collection.
- 1TB: Suitable when you mainly need relief from the built-in drive and regularly remove completed games.
- 2TB: A practical step up for a broad active library; it is also the capacity of the specifically documented Corsair alternative.
- 4TB: Better for players who keep many large PS5 installations available at once.
- 8TB: Sony’s M.2 ceiling and the largest documented SN850P option, intended for people who specifically want a very large concurrently installed collection.
Installed capacity is not the same as free capacity after formatting and system overhead. Treat “how many games fit” estimates cautiously: Sandisk’s 8TB SN850P sheet says up to 200 games using a simplifying 36GB average-game-size assumption, not an observed library measurement. Modern games vary widely, and updates, expansions and media apps consume space too.
Should you use an internal M.2 or an external USB drive?
Use an internal, compatible M.2 when your priority is launching PS5 games without moving them first. USB extended storage is useful as an archive and for PS4 games, but it cannot launch PS5 titles directly.
| Need | Internal compatible M.2 | External USB extended storage |
|---|---|---|
| Store and launch PS5 games | Yes | Store only; copy back to console or M.2 before playing |
| Store and launch PS4 games | Yes | Yes |
| Installation | Open the console, install a cooled M.2, then format it | Connect a compatible USB drive and configure extended storage |
Sony separately distinguishes game installations from saved data and cloud-storage functions. Cloud saves do not replace an M.2 game drive. A USB drive can be the cheaper way to archive PS5 games, but you must copy each title back before playing it. See Sony’s storage-solutions overview.
How do you install an M.2 SSD in a PS5?
Installation is straightforward if you follow the model-specific illustrations and handle the drive carefully. Sony provides separate procedures for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups.

- Update the console. Install the latest available PS5 system software before opening the chassis.
- Prepare the workspace. Turn the PS5 completely off, unplug every cable, and work on a clean, well-lit table. Have a #1 Phillips/cross-head screwdriver available. Ground yourself before touching the SSD or console components.
- Remove the correct cover. Follow Sony’s illustration for your CFI model, then remove the expansion-slot cover. Do not operate the console with a cover removed.
- Set the spacer. Move the supplied spacer to the hole matching the SSD’s length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Insert the drive by its edges. Align the M.2 connector, insert the SSD at an angle and press it down into position. Avoid touching the contacts or forcing the board.
- Secure and close. Fit the screw and spacer, reinstall the expansion-slot cover and refit the outer chassis cover before reconnecting cables.
- Format when prompted. On first startup, the PS5 will ask to format the M.2. Formatting erases the entire drive, so back up any existing contents before installing it.
- Choose installation behavior. Use Settings > Storage > Installation Location to set where new games go. For existing titles, open Game Library, highlight a game, press Options and choose Move Games and Apps.
Sony says that correctly following its procedure with a qualifying drive generally should not affect the manufacturer warranty, but damage caused by improper installation may not be covered. If the console does not detect the drive, power it down, reseat the SSD, verify that the heatsink assembly meets the dimensional limits and confirm that the drive is NVMe Gen4x4 rather than SATA.
What should you check before ordering?
Use this checklist on the exact product page and SKU, not a retailer’s shortened title:
- Is it PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Socket 3, Key M?
- Is the capacity between 250GB and 8TB?
- Does its claimed sequential-read speed meet Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation?
- Is cooling included, or will a low-profile heatsink need to be purchased separately?
- Do the SSD and heatsink together stay within 25mm width, 11.25mm total thickness, 8.0mm above the board and 2.45mm below?
- Is the length one of Sony’s supported sizes?
- Are you buying the “with Heatsink” variant where the manufacturer offers both versions?
- Does the warranty apply in your country, and does it require registration or a specific retailer?
- Have you checked the current price per usable capacity rather than comparing headline capacities alone?
Do not add a second heatsink to a pre-cooled drive. Conversely, a bare qualifying SSD should not be installed without effective cooling. If a listing omits assembled dimensions, find the manufacturer’s specification sheet or choose a model with clearly documented PS5 fit.
Does Prism change which SSD fits?
No. Prism covers and controllers do not alter the expansion bay, firmware support or M.2 dimensions. The only unresolved Prism hardware question in Sony’s announcement is which forthcoming cover SKU will fit which CFI chassis. That is a cover-compatibility issue, not an SSD issue. Continue to use the console’s model number and Sony’s M.2 requirements when selecting storage.
Which drive is the best choice for different buyers?
- Want the clearest documented fit: choose the WD_BLACK SN850P with integrated heatsink. Sony’s licensed designation and Sandisk’s published dimensions reduce the number of compatibility decisions.
- Want a high-rated alternative from another manufacturer: choose the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink, after checking the exact capacity’s dimensions.
- Want a clearly specified 2TB pre-cooled option: consider the Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB, SKU CSSD-F2000GBMP600PLP.
- Only need an archive: use a compatible external USB drive and accept that PS5 games must be copied back before they can run.
None of these choices is a proven universal performance winner. Sony’s compatibility rules, the exact SKU’s physical fit, capacity, warranty and your current price are more useful decision points than a small difference in advertised sequential-read speed.

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?
The PS5 says the M.2 cannot be used
Confirm that the drive is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4, not M.2 SATA, and that the connector is Key M. Check the capacity and all assembled dimensions. Turn the console off, unplug it and reseat the drive; never reseat hardware while the PS5 is powered.
The drive fits physically but runs hot
Verify that an effective heatsink is installed and that ventilation openings are unobstructed. A second heatsink can make a pre-cooled drive too thick, so remove the extra layer and recheck the manufacturer’s complete assembly dimensions.
You cannot find a game after installation
Open Settings > Storage and inspect both console and M.2 storage. Existing games remain where they were until moved; use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps. New installations follow the location selected under Settings > Storage > Installation Location.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe console asks to format the drive
That is expected on first use. Formatting removes all data on the M.2, so cancel if the drive contains files you need and back them up elsewhere first. Formatting the new drive does not replace your console’s saved-data backup plan.
Bottom line: what should a Prism owner buy?
Buy a normal PS5-compatible Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD; Prism does not require anything different. The WD_BLACK SN850P with heatsink is the most straightforward documented choice, while the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink and Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB offer specified alternatives. Match the capacity to your library, verify the complete cooled assembly against Sony’s dimensions and remember that an internal M.2 is the option that launches PS5 games directly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a special SSD for PS5 Prism?
No. Prism is an accessory design collection, so an existing PS5 uses the same M.2 rules as any other model. Select a cooled PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive that fits Sony’s capacity, speed and dimensional limits.
Can I play PS5 games from an external drive?
You can store PS5 games on compatible USB extended storage, but the PS5 must copy each game back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 before launching it. PS4 games can run directly from the external drive.
Will installing an M.2 delete my PS5 saves?
Formatting erases the M.2 itself, not your console’s existing storage. Back up any data already on the SSD, and maintain your normal console or cloud-save backup separately.
Does an 8TB SSD give me 8TB of usable game space?
No. Formatting and system overhead reduce usable capacity, and games vary greatly in size. Treat manufacturer game-count estimates as calculations based on an assumed average, not a guarantee.
How do I know which Prism cover fits my console?
Find the CFI model number on the underside of the console and compare it with the eventual cover listing. Sony’s October 2026 announcement did not confirm cross-compatibility among every original, Slim and Pro chassis.
