For the November 21, 2026 Dynamax Trails event, the most practical starting trio is Crowned Shield Zamazenta as the defensive lead, Dynamax Latios as the primary attacker and Dynamax Metagross or Dynamax Excadrill as the second attacker. In a coordinated four-Trainer lobby, split into two attacker teams, one defender and one healer rather than sending four unassigned damage dealers.
The target is Eternamax Eternatus, the uncapturable Poison- and Dragon-type Max Battle boss—not ordinary, catchable Eternatus. The official event announcement says Eternamax Eternatus will occupy most Power Spots on November 21, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. local time. After victory, the boss form cannot be caught; the event awards Eternatus Candy and Candy XL, while catchable Eternatus is obtained through GO Pass progression. See the official event announcement.

What is the difference between Eternatus and Eternamax Eternatus?
Eternatus is the Poison- and Dragon-type Legendary Pokémon that players can obtain through the event’s GO Pass progression. Eternamax Eternatus is its enormous boss form used for this Max Battle. The boss is not a catch encounter, so owning Eternatus is useful but not a requirement for building a winning team.
The November 21 event runs in each player’s local time zone. Because the official announcement describes a three-hour window rather than a permanent raid rotation, arrange your group and prepare your Max Pokémon before the event begins.

The specialist counter guide used for the recommendations below was written for an earlier Eternamax appearance. Its rankings and fast-move advice are useful planning guidance, not a guarantee that a later balance update or move-set change will produce the same result.
Which Pokémon can enter an Eternatus Max Battle?
Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon are legal in Max Battles. The official rule is explicit: “Only Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon can be used in Max Battles.” Check each candidate’s battle screen for a usable Max form before spending resources; a normal, non-Max version cannot fill a team slot even if it has excellent type coverage.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Bring three legal Max Pokémon. Your lineup should contain a fast charger, at least two Pokémon that can deliver super-effective Max damage, and enough durability or team support to survive repeated boss attacks. The exact trio depends on which Max-capable Pokémon you own, the fast moves available to them and which Max Moves you have trained.
What is the best practical three-Pokémon team?
For a player who does not yet have Eternatus, use a defensive lead followed by two trained attackers. This is a flexible default, not a universal mathematical optimum: change the second attacker when your available Max Moves or the boss’s move set makes another option safer.
| Slot | Recommended Pokémon | Job | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead | Crowned Shield Zamazenta | Defender and meter builder | The cited specialist guide ranks it as the leading tank, giving the group time to reach Max phases. |
| Attacker 1 | Dynamax Latios | Dragon or Psychic damage | Use the available fast move and trained Max Move to select the more useful typing. |
| Attacker 2 | Dynamax Metagross or Dynamax Excadrill | Psychic or Ground damage | Metagross supplies Psychic coverage; Excadrill supplies Ground coverage. |
Eternamax Eternatus is weak to Ice, Dragon, Psychic and Ground attacks. Poison/Dragon typing makes those four attack types super-effective, so do not choose a Pokémon solely because its species is famous or its individual Combat Power is high. Verify that the fast move and Max Attack actually produce the type you intend to use.
When should you use Latios?
Use Dynamax Latios when its available fast move and trained Max Move provide the Dragon or Psychic coverage your lobby lacks. It is the recommended primary attacker in the practical default team because it combines strong offensive pressure with a role that can be prepared for either of the two most convenient attack types.

When should you use Metagross?
Dynamax Metagross is the second-attacker choice when you want Psychic damage. Its value is highest when the relevant Psychic Max Move is trained and another teammate is already handling charging or defense.
When should you use Excadrill?
Dynamax Excadrill is the alternative second attacker for Ground damage. Choose it when your group needs Ground coverage or when your Metagross lacks the right Max Move. It is better to bring a properly trained Excadrill than an untrained nominal “counter.”
Is Eternatus required to defeat Eternamax Eternatus?
No. The cited guide lists Eternatus as its top attacker, using Dragon Tail and Dynamax Cannon, but also names Latios, Metagross, Excadrill, Hatterene and Latias as alternatives. A player who already owns a legal Max-capable Eternatus can make it the main damage dealer; a player who does not can use the alternatives above.
Do not substitute ordinary Eternatus for a legal Max Pokémon. The relevant question is whether the form you are selecting can enter a Max Battle and has a trained Max Move, not simply whether the species appears on a counter list.

How should four Trainers divide their roles?
A coordinated four-Trainer group should assign jobs before entering the lobby. The specialist guide’s most useful structure is two attacker teams, one defender and one healer.
Two attacker teams
Each attacker brings one fast charger plus two trained Dragon, Psychic or Ground attackers. The charger fills the Max meter between phases; the two attackers take over during the three-turn Max windows. Coordinate so both players do not switch away from charging at the same time.

The defender
Lead with Crowned Shield Zamazenta. Crowned Sword Zacian is the cited alternative if Zamazenta is unavailable. The defender’s job is to absorb pressure and keep the group functioning, not to chase the highest personal damage number.
The healer
Use Dynamax Blissey with Max Spirit trained. The guide also lists Wailord, Gigantamax Snorlax and Gigantamax Lapras as alternatives. A healer can be more valuable than a fourth attacker when repeated targeted attacks are causing teammates to faint before their next Max phase.

How do you run the battle from the opening move?
Follow this loop rather than opening with three charged-move users and waiting for the Max meter.
- Enter with three legal Max Pokémon. Confirm that every slot is Dynamax- or Gigantamax-capable and that at least one can perform the role you were assigned. The official Max Battle rules explain the entry restriction and Max mechanics.
- Start with the fast charger. The specialist guide recommends a Pokémon with a 0.5-second fast move so the meter fills quickly. Select the move that produces the Max Attack typing you want rather than choosing speed alone.
- Use fast moves and collect battlefield energy. The official rules say attacking fills the Max meter, and visible energy icons accelerate the process. Move toward or collect those icons whenever the battle interface presents them.
- Dodge the targeted-attack warning. When the boss marks your Pokémon, dodge instead of accepting every hit. Preserving the charger or defender prevents a failed run caused by losing the role that keeps the next Max phase on schedule.
- Switch when the Max meter is full. Move to the prepared attacker for the three-turn Max phase. Use the trained Max Attack, then return to the charger or to the role the group currently needs when the phase ends.
- Repeat the cycle. Fast moves, energy collection, targeted dodges and deliberate switching are the core loop. If all three of your Pokémon faint, the official Help Center says you cannot select replacements during the battle; cheer for surviving teammates instead.
Pokémon GO Hub specifically recommends fast moves rather than charged moves as the normal way to charge against a bulky Max boss, arguing that fast moves are quicker while still generating the same minimum Max Energy per attack in this situation. That is a specialist strategy recommendation, not an official rule, so treat it as a practical starting point and adjust if a future update changes the mechanics.
Which Max Moves and fast moves should you train?
Train the move that matches your assigned job before the event. Max Attack is the priority for attackers, while Max Guard supports the defender and Max Spirit supports the healer. Pokémon GO confirms that Max Moves can be unlocked and leveled with Candy and Max Particles; do this before joining a high-difficulty lobby, not while the group is waiting.
For attackers, match the fast-move type to the desired Max Move type. The specialist guide emphasizes that the fast move determines the Max attack’s typing, so a Dragon counter with a non-Dragon fast move may not deliver the coverage you expected. Inspect the move labels in the Pokémon’s Max screen after every move change.

Details are in the official Adventure Effect announcement.
What should you prepare before November 21?
- Verify legality: open each Pokémon and confirm its Dynamax or Gigantamax status.
- Assign roles: decide who charges, who attacks, who defends and who heals before entering the Power Spot.
- Train Max Moves: invest Candy and Max Particles in the attack, Guard or Spirit move your role needs.
- Check typing: make sure the fast move produces Dragon, Psychic, Ground or Ice coverage where intended.
- Reserve Max Particles: Pokémon GO Hub’s August 23, 2025 guide cited 800 Max Particles to participate. Treat that as guide-era evidence, not a confirmed requirement for the November 2026 event.
- Keep a Max Mushroom available if desired: the official Help Center says one increases damage for 30 minutes. It is an optional in-game resource, not a requirement.
- Plan a fallback: bring a second legal attacker or healer if your primary Pokémon has the wrong move set or is vulnerable to the boss’s attacks.
The official Help Center says Max Particles are deducted only after a successful victory, so an unsuccessful attempt does not consume them under that rule. Read the current in-game confirmation screen in case the interface or event terms change.
How many people do you need?
There is no independently published, current figure proving a universal minimum player count for the November 21, 2026 Eternamax Eternatus event. Do not treat an older guide estimate as a guaranteed requirement. The practical answer depends on each participant’s trained Max Moves, survivability, ability to dodge and role coordination.
A smaller group with a charger, two trained attackers, a defender and reliable switching can outperform a larger lobby of unassigned Pokémon. If your group cannot maintain the Max meter or repeatedly loses all three Pokémon, add Trainers and improve role coverage rather than relying on raw headcount alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should you change after a failed attempt?
The meter fills too slowly
Replace the opening Pokémon with one that has the recommended 0.5-second fast move, collect every visible energy icon and avoid spending the opening period on slow charged-move animations. Confirm that another teammate is not also using the only effective charger.
Your Max attacks are not super-effective
Inspect the fast move, not just the species name. Change to a Dragon, Psychic, Ground or Ice fast move and train the corresponding Max Attack before trying again.

The team faints before the next Max phase
Assign a defender and healer, use targeted dodges and switch out of danger instead of leaving the charger exposed. A Crowned Shield Zamazenta lead or Dynamax Blissey with Max Spirit can add more practical value than replacing a support slot with another untrained attacker.
You brought an illegal Pokémon
Leave the lobby and replace the slot with a confirmed Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon. Ordinary forms cannot be used in Max Battles, regardless of their level or type advantage.
What is the simplest decision rule for your roster?
Start with the best legal fast charger you have, then choose two Pokémon whose trained Max Attacks are Dragon, Psychic, Ground or Ice. Add Crowned Shield Zamazenta when you need a defensive lead, and use Dynamax Blissey with Max Spirit when your group is losing members faster than it can reach the next Max phase. If Eternatus is available in a legal Max-capable form, Dragon Tail plus Dynamax Cannon makes it a premium attacker, but it is never mandatory.
How we chose these team recommendations
The recommendations prioritize five factors: assigned role, super-effective typing, Max Move investment, availability in a legal Max-capable form, and durability or utility. The attacker and support rankings come from the specialist Eternamax guide, while entry rules, energy behavior, Max Particles handling and the event schedule come from official Pokémon GO and Niantic sources. Move availability and balance may change before the event, so confirm the current battle screen on November 21.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I catch Eternamax Eternatus after winning?
No. The announced event treats Eternamax Eternatus as the Max Battle boss and awards Eternatus Candy and Candy XL instead of a post-battle catch encounter. The catchable Eternatus is tied to GO Pass progression.
Is Ice coverage still useful if my team has no Dragon or Psychic attacker?
Yes. Ice is one of the four cited super-effective attack types against Poison/Dragon Eternamax Eternatus. Use a legal Max Pokémon with a trained Ice Max Attack, and verify that its fast move supplies the intended typing.
Recommended Free Tools
Should every Trainer bring the same three Pokémon?
No. Repeating the same trio can leave the lobby without a charger, defender or healer. Assign roles first, then select legal Pokémon that cover those jobs and the available Dragon, Psychic, Ground or Ice Max Moves.
What happens if all three of my Pokémon faint?
You cannot choose replacement Pokémon during that Max Battle, according to the official Help Center. You can cheer for teammates who remain, so preserving at least one role Pokémon through dodging and support is important.
