Which Nintendo Switch Online tier includes the games?
Check both your membership and your console before choosing a classic. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online service page describes the included classic libraries and other benefits. Standard Nintendo Switch Online includes NES, Super NES, and Game Boy games. The Expansion Pack adds Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis collections. GameCube classics are an Expansion Pack benefit on Nintendo Switch 2 only.

Nintendo does not publish a fixed release calendar; Nintendo Support says, “There is no set schedule for new releases, but each collection will continue to grow.” Check the current library for your region before subscribing for a particular game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 — NES platforming
A strong first choice if you want a classic 2D platformer. GameSpot singles it out as the one NES collection game to play if choosing only one, pointing to its enduring platforming and ideas that became central to the series. Its period-specific movement and pacing are part of the experience; it may feel less forgiving than newer platformers.
Super Mario World — Super NES platforming
Choose this if you want another 2D platformer with a distinct Super NES-era feel. Gaming.net highlights its platforming and technical presentation. It is a useful follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3 if you want to compare how the genre evolved across console generations.
Rank #2
- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
Super Mario 64 — Nintendo 64 3D platforming
For players curious about the transition to 3D, Gaming.net includes Super Mario 64 as a notable Nintendo 64 game and discusses its role in 3D Mario’s history. Its camera and control conventions come from an earlier era, so it is a better fit for exploring that history than for expecting modern precision. Nintendo 64 games require Expansion Pack membership.
Golden Sun — Game Boy Advance RPG
If you want something longer and more story-driven than a platformer, Gaming.net recommends this Game Boy Advance role-playing game. It gives Expansion Pack members a genre-diverse option; the GBA classics library requires the Expansion Pack.

How to choose a game that fits your play style
- For an immediate platforming pick: start with Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World, depending on which console era interests you.
- For a look at early 3D design: try Super Mario 64 if you have Expansion Pack and are comfortable with older camera and control conventions.
- For a role-playing game: consider Golden Sun if your membership includes the Game Boy Advance collection.
- For multiplayer: check whether the original game supported multiplayer. Eligible classics can use those original multiplayer features online, but Nintendo’s classic collections do not provide random matchmaking; online play is with friends.
Classic games can also differ in convenience features such as saving or restoring a session. Check the features available in the specific collection rather than assuming every title works the same way.

Membership and offline access
Access to the classic game collections requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. You can play offline, but Nintendo Support says the membership must be verified online at least once every seven days. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics – Nintendo Switch Online Overview & FAQ for access details.

Regional catalogs and additions
Availability is not identical everywhere, and Nintendo can add games without a set schedule. Nintendo Life’s September 2026 catalog guide reports regional differences and counts 210 standard-tier games and 348 Expansion Pack games, or 359 when Switch 2-exclusive GameCube titles are included. Those are Nintendo Life’s catalog counts, not official Nintendo statistics; its guide also excludes certain Japan-only releases and special versions. Treat the figures as a dated snapshot, not a promise of what appears in your own catalog.
Switch 2 and GameCube
GameCube classics require both Expansion Pack membership and a Nintendo Switch 2. If considering a controller for that library, Nintendo says: “The Nintendo GameCube controller is only available while supplies last and is only compatible with the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” The controller is not a requirement stated for playing the classic game collection.
