007 First Light launched worldwide on May 27, 2026, so the best companion games are no longer placeholders for an unreleased Bond adventure. They are alternatives to play alongside IO Interactive’s young-James-Bond origin story, games to revisit after finishing it, or different ways to enjoy the same fantasy of covert operations, gadgets, disguises and high-stakes infiltration.
IO Interactive describes 007 First Light as “a third-person action-adventure game that blends IO Interactive’s signature stealth and action gameplay mechanics.” That makes the closest comparisons depend on which part of Bond appeals to you. HITMAN World of Assassination is the strongest match for social stealth and globe-trotting spy improvisation. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is better for open-world infiltration and military espionage. Splinter Cell Blacklist delivers the most traditional covert-agent role-play, while Dishonored Definitive Edition is the choice for creative stealth built around supernatural powers.

Its open-world environments, dynamic weather, day-and-night cycle, close-quarters combat and enemy AI support long-form reconnaissance and experimentation. Splinter Cell Blacklist is the clearest choice for a classic secret-agent campaign with Sam Fisher, night-vision equipment and carefully staged operations. Dishonored Definitive Edition is less realistic espionage, but it offers the richest freedom to combine stealth, nonlethal methods and supernatural abilities into personal solutions.

1. HITMAN World of Assassination: the best overall Bond-like sandbox
HITMAN World of Assassination is the natural first recommendation for anyone asking for a game like First Light. Its official PlayStation description presents it as a spy-thriller adventure with more than 20 locations, unlockable gear, highly replayable missions and an emphasis on strategic planning. Those elements line up closely with the fantasy of a professional agent arriving in a foreign city, gathering intelligence and turning a complicated environment to his advantage.
Why it feels like Bond
The central skill is not simply aiming well. It is understanding a location. You can study routines, identify restricted areas, acquire a disguise, manipulate the environment and decide how much risk to accept. A mission can begin as an apparently straightforward infiltration and become a chain of improvised decisions when a guard changes position or an opportunity appears. That emphasis on observation and preparation makes the game feel closer to a spy thriller than a conventional cover shooter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDisguises are especially important. They let you move through spaces that would otherwise be inaccessible, but they are not a universal key: suspicious behavior, restricted zones and attentive characters can still expose you. The result is social stealth rather than invisibility. You are constantly judging whether to maintain a cover identity, retreat to a safer route or abandon the plan and improvise.
Mission design and replayability
Each location is built as a compact espionage playground with multiple routes, targets and environmental possibilities. The first run is often about learning: where people go, which doors are locked, which objects can be used and how security reacts. Later runs become more deliberate. You can pursue a particular challenge, test an unusual disguise or execute a plan that would have been impossible before you understood the location.
Rank #2
- EARN THE NUMBER - Discover a new James Bond origin story, and the events that led a young maverick to become the best MI6 agent.
- A THRILLING ESPIONAGE ADVENTURE - Embark on missions in breathtaking locations, drive iconic vehicles, and dive into a cinematic adventure in pursuit of a rogue agent who’s always one step ahead.
- SPYING, YOUR WAY - Go silent or go loud. Whether fighting with fists or firepower, using gadgets to infiltrate, or bluffing your way past guards, the approach is entirely up to you.
- WELCOME TO MI6 - Test your skills and replay your favorite missions with additional modifiers, for endless espionage fun!
That structure makes HITMAN particularly suitable before or after First Light. If you want a campaign that tells you exactly where to go and rarely asks you to repeat a mission, another game on this list may suit you better. If you enjoy refining a plan, comparing outcomes and finding cleaner solutions, it offers the deepest replay loop here.
Who should choose it
- Players who want disguises and social stealth rather than constant firefights.
- Anyone who enjoys strategic planning, environmental manipulation and improvisation.
- Players looking for a globe-trotting spy-thriller tone with missions worth replaying.
- Anyone who wants the closest match to the fantasy of entering a guarded location under a false identity.
2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain: best for open-world infiltration
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the strongest pick when “spy game” means reconnaissance, infiltration and flexible tactics across a large landscape. Konami’s official descriptions highlight open-world environments, realistic weather and day/night cycles, expanded close-quarters combat and improved enemy AI. Those systems make every operation feel less like a fixed puzzle and more like a situation you shape through preparation.

How its stealth differs from HITMAN
HITMAN asks you to read a social ecosystem. The Phantom Pain asks you to read terrain, patrols and visibility. You can observe a compound from a distance, mark threats, choose an approach and adapt when weather or the time of day changes what enemies can see. A road, ridge or outpost can be handled in several ways, and the same objective may play differently when you return with new equipment.
The open-world setting gives stealth a sense of travel and logistics. You are not merely moving between rooms; you are crossing exposed ground, deciding where to enter and considering how quickly an alert will spread. The day/night cycle changes enemy awareness and your own visibility, while weather can alter the conditions under which a carefully planned approach works.
Tools, combat and experimentation
The game combines stealth with close-quarters combat and a broad set of tactical tools. You can approach an objective quietly, use a distraction, exploit enemy behavior or fight your way out when a plan collapses. That flexibility is valuable for Bond fans because it supports the rhythm of a covert operation: preparation, a controlled breach, a sudden complication and a fast improvisation.
Rank #3
- You are the new Bond - Employ all of your Bond skills in high-octane combat, chaotic gunfights and precise stealth takedowns
- Take cover - First person shooting with third person cover combat allows you to adjust your gameplay to meet each challenge. Hide behind cover, fire from protected positions and use suppressing fire to distract enemies
- Fight worthy adversaries - Advanced AI systems allow enemies to react to you in intelligent and tactical ways. Think quickly, because they'll seek cover and outflank you
- The new world of Bond - Using the likenesses and voices of actors from both films including Daniel Craig and Judi Dench, the game immerses you in the story of how Bond becomes the ultimate 00 agent. Each mission will take you through the exotic locations such as Casino Royale in Madagascar, the deserts of Bolivia and the streets of Austria
- Become the world's premier MI6 agent - Bond gets online with standard 12-player multiplayer mode plus unique Bond modes such as Bond VS which pits you against other opponents in an intense race to complete objectives, and Golden Gun mode, which lets you perform one hit kills using the coveted Golden Gun
It is also more militarized than First Light’s spy-thriller premise. The emphasis is on field operations and hostile facilities rather than elegant social infiltration. If your ideal Bond mission involves blending into a gala, HITMAN is a closer fit. If it involves studying a fortress from a hillside, crossing a hostile zone under cover of darkness and extracting a target, The Phantom Pain is the better match.
Which edition to look for
Konami’s Definitive Experience bundle contains The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes and downloadable content. Edition names and physical availability can vary by platform, region and stock status, so confirm the exact contents before buying. A used copy may not contain the same included content as a complete bundle.
Who should choose it
- Players who want open areas instead of compact, curated assassination locations.
- Fans of military espionage, reconnaissance and long-range planning.
- Anyone who enjoys dynamic weather, day/night changes and enemy responses.
- Players who want stealth to coexist with close-quarters combat and systemic experimentation.
3. Splinter Cell Blacklist: best classic covert-agent experience
Splinter Cell Blacklist is the clearest choice for readers who want to inhabit a traditional professional spy. Ubisoft presents Splinter Cell as cinematic stealth action starring Sam Fisher, an elite covert agent in the NSA’s Third Echelon. The Blacklist description frames the game as a stealth-action thriller that moves through exotic locations and includes signature equipment such as the sticky shocker.
The appeal of methodical infiltration
Where HITMAN emphasizes social camouflage and The Phantom Pain emphasizes open terrain, Blacklist focuses on the moment-to-moment craft of remaining unseen. Darkness, cover, sound and gadgets are central to the experience. You enter a space, identify threats, create a safe route and use equipment to control the situation without turning every encounter into a firefight.
That makes it particularly attractive to anyone whose Bond fantasy is built around night operations, surveillance and precision equipment. The sticky shocker is a good example of the game’s tone: it is a specialized tool that lets you solve a problem quietly rather than a generic weapon designed only to increase damage.
Campaign structure and pacing
Blacklist is more mission-based and directed than the two sandbox games above. The structure gives each operation a clear objective and a cinematic sense of escalation. You have less freedom to redesign an entire location, but the tighter pacing can make the campaign easier to follow if you prefer authored set pieces over endless experimentation.
Its replay value comes from improving execution, attempting different approaches and revisiting missions with a better understanding of patrol patterns and equipment. It does not offer the same scale of repeatable social scenarios as HITMAN, but it provides a focused covert-operations loop that remains easy to recommend to fans of secret-agent fiction.
Rank #4
- Build your own Bond, based on Sean Connery, in a retro, 1960s Cold War era setting -- complete with classic cars, architecture, fashion, and exotic locations
- Innovative gameplay, wider variety, non-linear missions, introduction of new focus/zoom function
- RPG elements - Invest in your character by equipping, upgrading, scoring and rewards
- Intense action, driving, jetpack and stealth missions
- Features movie-based missions as well as original, action-intensive sequences
Who should choose it
- Players who want a named covert agent and a cinematic campaign.
- Fans of night vision, specialized gadgets and careful movement through guarded spaces.
- Anyone who prefers mission-by-mission structure to a large open world.
- Players seeking the most conventional “elite spy on an operation” role-play in this list.
4. Dishonored Definitive Edition: best for supernatural stealth and player choice
Dishonored Definitive Edition is the deliberate outlier. It is not a realistic espionage game, and its protagonist is not trying to imitate a modern intelligence officer. Bethesda’s official description instead emphasizes player-defined assassination approaches and abilities such as teleportation, possession and time stopping. Those powers turn each level into a dense problem with several possible solutions.
Why Bond fans may still enjoy it
The connection is creative agency. A Bond story often revolves around using an unusual device, exploiting a weakness in a security system or turning an apparently impossible situation into an escape. Dishonored expresses that idea through supernatural powers rather than a believable gadget kit. You can move through a guarded space, bypass a confrontation, manipulate a target’s surroundings or choose a nonlethal outcome.
The first-person perspective makes movement and observation feel immediate. You are looking for routes across rooftops, gaps in patrols, vertical shortcuts and ways to separate a target from protection. The game rewards curiosity, so a player who enjoys testing the edges of a level may get more from it than someone seeking a tightly scripted spy thriller.
Choice, consequences and replaying levels
Each assassination can be approached in your own style. You can favor stealth, use powers aggressively, avoid killing or combine methods. The important distinction from the other games here is that the world reacts to the way you play. A nonlethal run and a violent run are not simply two animations for the same mission; they create different pressures and outcomes.
That makes Dishonored a strong follow-up when you have already experienced a realistic spy game and want more freedom rather than more authenticity. It is also useful for players who value experimentation over perfect adherence to an intended route.

How to choose the right stealth game
Choose by stealth style
Ask what you want to hide from. In HITMAN, you hide your identity and intentions inside a social environment. In The Phantom Pain, you hide your position from patrols across open terrain. In Blacklist, you manage visibility, sound and tactical equipment in focused operations. In Dishonored, you use powers and level knowledge to create routes that ordinary security cannot anticipate.

Choose by camera and combat feel
Camera perspective changes how stealth feels. Splinter Cell Blacklist and Dishonored put you close to the character’s movement and equipment, while HITMAN and The Phantom Pain emphasize reading a broader situation around your agent. If you prefer stealth to remain the main solution, Blacklist and Dishonored make that focus especially clear. If you want to switch between concealment and direct confrontation, The Phantom Pain offers the most systemic flexibility.
Choose by mission structure
For large, curated locations that invite repeated attempts, choose HITMAN. For open spaces connected by a wider operational world, choose The Phantom Pain. For directed missions with cinematic pacing, choose Blacklist. For compact levels with layered routes and consequences, choose Dishonored.
Choose by replay goals
Replayability can mean different things. HITMAN encourages you to repeat a location until you understand every opportunity. The Phantom Pain lets you revisit operations with different equipment and approaches. Blacklist rewards cleaner execution and improved mastery of mission routes. Dishonored supports radically different playthroughs based on powers, lethality and player choices.
A practical play order around First Light
- Play First Light first if you want the most direct Bond context. It is already available worldwide and presents a young Bond in a third-person action-adventure that combines stealth and action.
- Move to HITMAN World of Assassination for social stealth. The contrast shows how much of a spy thriller can be built from disguises, routines and environmental planning rather than gunfights.
- Play Splinter Cell Blacklist when you want a focused covert-agent campaign. Its mission-based structure provides a more traditional secret-operation rhythm.
- Choose Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for a larger tactical change of pace. Open-world infiltration, weather and day/night conditions shift the emphasis from social manipulation to field reconnaissance.
- Finish with Dishonored Definitive Edition if you want experimentation. Its supernatural abilities and reactive world let you revisit stealth from a deliberately unrealistic angle.
Availability and edition checks
Release dates, supported platforms, physical stock, regional editions and prices can change. The specific official descriptions available for these games do not establish one universal current price or inventory status. Before purchasing, verify the platform edition, whether all downloadable content is included, the region of a physical copy and whether a used package contains the advertised extras.
For Metal Gear Solid V, distinguish the standalone game from the Definitive Experience bundle, which includes Ground Zeroes and downloadable content. For Splinter Cell Blacklist, physical availability varies by platform and region, so confirm that the listing is for the intended edition. For any title, store pages can change their naming and included-content notes after publication.
The verdict
HITMAN World of Assassination is the best all-purpose recommendation for a Bond fan. It combines spy-thriller presentation, disguises, strategic planning, gear and more than 20 replayable locations. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the better choice for open-world infiltration and military espionage. Splinter Cell Blacklist remains the most direct classic covert-agent experience, while Dishonored Definitive Edition is the standout for supernatural powers and player-driven assassination routes.
Because 007 First Light launched on May 27, 2026, these are not substitutes you need while a release date approaches. They are complementary games: four distinct ways to keep playing stealth, gadgets, infiltration and spy fiction before, alongside or after IO Interactive’s Bond origin story.
