Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most players, Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) on an Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC is the best way to play the classic Halo campaigns today. It puts six games in one maintained collection, works with current online services, supports modern display and control options, and preserves the original-era look through Classic graphics modes in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Choose an original Xbox or Xbox 360 only if preserving the original hardware experience matters more to you than current multiplayer, installation and save conveniences.
Why MCC is the best all-around choice
MCC combines Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach and Halo 4. Halo Support describes it as the ultimate way to play six Halo games spanning more than ten years. That description is practical rather than merely promotional: the collection is available on current Xbox consoles and Windows, receives modern platform support, and keeps campaign, multiplayer and Firefight options together.

The Anniversary releases are enhanced versions, not replacements that erase the older presentation. In the first two games you can switch between the updated visuals and a Classic graphics mode while playing. That makes MCC the strongest compromise between preservation and convenience. You get the original game design, missions and story, but you do not have to maintain aging hardware or accept the online-service limits of Xbox 360.
When another option is better
- Choose an original Xbox copy of Combat Evolved if original hardware, disc behavior and the period-specific presentation are your priority.
- Choose an Xbox 360 copy for Halo 3, ODST, Reach or Halo 4 when strict hardware authenticity matters more than current online features.
- Choose PC when you want adjustable graphics, mouse-and-keyboard support and the widest range of display settings.
- Choose a Series X when you want the highest console output and a living-room setup without building a gaming PC.
What is included in the collection?
| Game | What you receive in MCC | Classic visual switch |
|---|---|---|
| Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary | Full campaign and multiplayer content presented through the Anniversary package | Yes; switch between Anniversary and Classic graphics |
| Halo 2 Anniversary | Full campaign and multiplayer content with Anniversary presentation | Yes; switch between Anniversary and Classic graphics |
| Halo 3 | Campaign and multiplayer | No Anniversary toggle in MCC |
| Halo 3: ODST | Campaign and Firefight, subject to the applicable entitlement | No Anniversary toggle in MCC |
| Halo: Reach | Campaign and Firefight, subject to the applicable entitlement | No Anniversary toggle in MCC |
| Halo 4 | Campaign and multiplayer | No Anniversary toggle in MCC |
The visual switch is therefore not a collection-wide “original mode.” It applies to the first two games only. For the later four, original Xbox 360 software is the stricter route to the period presentation, while MCC remains the easier route to play them on current hardware.

Xbox Series X, Series S or PC?
All three current-platform choices use MCC, but they suit different rooms, displays and control preferences.
| Platform | Officially documented output and features | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 4K at 60 or 120 Hz; adjustable 70–120-degree field of view; four-player split-screen at 60 FPS | Best console image quality and couch play | Less graphics flexibility than a PC; requires a 4K/120-Hz display to realize the highest output |
| Xbox Series S | 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz | Lower-cost current Xbox route and 1080p televisions | Lower resolution than Series X; storage and display choices still affect installation comfort |
| Windows PC | Resolution, frame-rate and input settings depend on the computer; supports Steam, Microsoft Store and eligible PC Game Pass access | Players who want mouse and keyboard, ultrawide or high-refresh setups, and granular settings | Performance varies with hardware; check the current store listing for system requirements |
Why Series X is the easiest console recommendation
Microsoft and Halo Support document 4K output at either 60 or 120 Hz on Series X, a field-of-view range from 70 to 120 degrees, and four-player split-screen at 60 FPS. Those specifications make it the strongest plug-and-play choice for a large television. Set the field of view to match your seating distance and comfort rather than assuming the maximum is always best; a very wide view can make distant targets appear smaller.
When Series S makes sense
Series S is the sensible current-console choice for a 1080p display or a smaller budget. Its documented target is 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz. You still receive the same six-game MCC structure and modern service support, but you should not buy it expecting Series X resolution.
Why PC is attractive
On Windows, MCC can be purchased through Steam or the Microsoft Store, or accessed through a PC Game Pass plan that includes it. PC allows you to select a preferred input method, tune resolution and frame rate, and use a broad range of monitors. A wired or wireless Xbox-compatible controller is useful for campaign and split-screen-style play, while mouse and keyboard can be preferable for competitive multiplayer. Because the available data does not establish a single hardware requirement, use the current listing for the edition you intend to install.
How to buy MCC and understand the entitlements
MCC has three practical cost models: a one-time purchase, separate purchases for certain game content, or access through an applicable Game Pass subscription. The exact offer can differ by platform and region, so check the storefront attached to your account before paying.

One-time purchase
A direct MCC purchase is the simplest long-term arrangement. It does not depend on keeping a subscription active, and it is appropriate if you expect to replay the campaigns or use multiplayer over several years.
Reach and ODST ownership
Reach and ODST were added after the original 2014 MCC release. On Xbox, their campaigns and Firefight can be separate purchases, depending on the edition or entitlement you own. On PC, the official entitlement guidance says they are included with MCC or can be bought separately. Read the product page’s included-content list rather than assuming every older Xbox edition contains every later addition.

Game Pass
A qualifying Game Pass plan can include MCC on Xbox or PC. Halo Support notes that availability depends on the applicable Game Pass offering, and plans change by region and date. Treat subscription access as a way to play while the entitlement is active, not as proof that you permanently own every component. If you cancel, change plans or move regions, recheck access before planning a long campaign run.
Install MCC on a current platform
- Choose the storefront. On Xbox, open the console store and locate Halo: The Master Chief Collection. On Windows, use Steam, the Microsoft Store or the PC Game Pass catalog.
- Verify included content. Expand the edition details and confirm whether Reach and ODST campaigns and Firefight are included or listed as separate entitlements.
- Install the collection and desired components. MCC is modular, so select the campaigns, multiplayer components and language packs you actually need when the installer presents those choices.
- Allow updates to finish. Do not launch into a campaign while a large content or service update is pending; an incomplete installation can make a game appear to be missing.
- Sign in to the same account used for purchase. This is especially important when switching between an Xbox console and the Xbox PC app.
- Open the individual game tile. MCC uses a central menu, so select the specific campaign or multiplayer component instead of expecting six separate applications in your library.
Steam and Microsoft Store installations are separate PC storefront entitlements. Save synchronization is supported across Xbox, the Xbox PC app and Steam for most MCC data, but the account you use and the installed content must match the save you are trying to resume.
Should you play in release order or story chronology?
For a first playthrough, use release order: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4. Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide specifically recommends beginning with the Combat Evolved Anniversary campaign to experience the games as they released. This order shows how the series’ mechanics, level design and narrative assumptions developed.

Release order for first-time players
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo: Reach
- Halo 4
Play ODST after Halo 2. Its campaign is a side story set during the Halo 2 era, so playing it earlier can weaken the context and pacing established by the mainline sequel.
Chronological story order for returning players
- Halo: Reach
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
- Halo 4
This sequence follows the in-universe timeline more closely. It is a good second-run option when continuity matters more than experiencing the franchise’s original introductions and mechanical progression.
How to preserve the classic presentation in MCC
Launch either Combat Evolved Anniversary or Halo 2 Anniversary, start the campaign, and use the in-game visual toggle to move between Anniversary and Classic graphics. The switch is designed for comparison during play, so you can retain modern menus and platform support while viewing the original-era art direction.
What the toggle does not cover
Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4 do not have the same Anniversary visual switch in MCC. Their MCC versions are the modern way to run those games, but they are not an on-demand recreation of the Xbox 360 rendering pipeline. If that distinction is essential, use original Xbox 360 software for those titles and accept the service limitations described below.
Sound, field of view and display choices
Use a display mode that matches your screen rather than forcing a higher refresh rate your television cannot show. On Series X, the documented 60- or 120-Hz options and 70–120-degree field-of-view control let you tune motion and visibility. Series S documentation targets 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz. On PC, test your chosen resolution and refresh rate in a short mission before committing to a long playlist; readability and stable frame pacing matter more than a number that your monitor cannot sustain.

Campaign co-op, split-screen and online multiplayer
MCC supports campaign and multiplayer options on current Xbox and Windows platforms, using contemporary platform services. Series X documentation specifically lists four-player split-screen at 60 FPS, making it the clearest choice for a shared television. For PC, local play depends on the controllers, display and configuration available to your computer.
Playing Halo 2 and Halo 3 online today
Yes, use their MCC versions on a modern Xbox or Windows PC. MCC titles were rebuilt for current online services and are not affected by the Xbox 360 service shutdown. This is the practical answer for readers who want matchmaking, online co-op or other supported network features without maintaining a 360.
What changed on Xbox 360
Xbox 360 online services for affected Halo games were reduced or disabled on January 13, 2022, when the legacy service was sunset. A 360 remains useful for an offline or authenticity-focused replay, but you should not buy one expecting the same online experience available through MCC. Local multiplayer and offline campaigns are the reasons to choose the older hardware now.
Save transfers between Xbox and PC
Most MCC save data transfers between Xbox, the Xbox PC app and Steam. That includes completed missions and playlists, which is valuable if you begin on a console and continue on a PC. Sign in with the account associated with your MCC progress and allow synchronization to complete before launching a different platform.
What to check when a save is missing
- Confirm that you opened the same Microsoft account or linked profile used for the original progress.
- Check that the campaign or playlist component is installed and that its entitlement is active.
- Leave the game open while synchronization completes rather than immediately creating a new profile.
- Do not assume every setting, local preference or platform-specific configuration transfers just because mission and playlist progress does.
Choosing between MCC and original discs
| Priority | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play all six games on current hardware | MCC on Series X|S or PC | One maintained collection with modern services and current-platform installation |
| Original look for CE and Halo 2, plus convenience | MCC with Classic graphics enabled | Instant Anniversary/Classic switching in those two games |
| Highest console output and couch co-op | MCC on Series X | 4K at 60 or 120 Hz, 70–120-degree FOV and four-player split-screen at 60 FPS |
| Lower-cost current Xbox route at 1080p | MCC on Series S | Documented 1080p at 60 or 120 Hz |
| Mouse and keyboard or extensive display tuning | MCC on Windows PC | Adjustable PC settings and Steam/Microsoft Store access |
| Strict Xbox 360-era presentation for later games | Original Xbox 360 software | Closer hardware authenticity, but legacy online services were sunset on January 13, 2022 |
Common problems and practical fixes
A campaign appears locked
Return to the storefront or Manage game and add-ons screen and verify the campaign entitlement. Reach and ODST may be separate Xbox purchases, while PC listings may include them with MCC or sell them separately. A Game Pass plan must also be one that currently includes the content in your region.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The game looks too modern
In Combat Evolved Anniversary or Halo 2 Anniversary, activate the Classic graphics toggle during the campaign. There is no equivalent switch for the other four games, so an original 360 copy is the only option in this comparison when period rendering is non-negotiable.
Online play fails on a 360
That is an expected limitation of the January 13, 2022 Xbox 360 service sunset for affected Halo games. Move to the MCC version on a current Xbox or Windows PC for supported modern online services.
Progress does not appear on another platform
Check the account, platform entitlement and installed component first. Most campaign and playlist progress transfers among Xbox, the Xbox PC app and Steam, but a mismatched account or missing content can prevent the expected save from loading.

On Series X, use the documented four-player split-screen mode at 60 FPS and confirm that the console is connected to a display capable of the selected refresh rate. On other platforms, reduce display demands or check controller and local-session settings before assuming the campaign is defective.
Final recommendation by player type
- New to Halo: Buy or access MCC, play on Series X if you want the simplest television setup, and follow release order.
- Returning fan who wants the original look: Use MCC and switch CE and Halo 2 to Classic graphics; consider original 360 software only for the later titles if exact period presentation outweighs convenience.
- PC player: Use the Steam or Microsoft Store edition, or an eligible PC Game Pass plan, and pair a controller if you want the console-style campaign experience.
- Local group: Series X is the clearest choice because its documented enhancements include four-player split-screen at 60 FPS.
- Offline preservationist: Original Xbox or Xbox 360 hardware provides the most direct period experience, but plan around the loss of affected 360 online services.
For nearly everyone else, MCC is the answer: it preserves the defining campaigns, offers Classic presentation where it matters most, carries saves across current Xbox and PC options, and avoids the hardware and online constraints of a legacy replay.
