Spoilers for The Covenant (2006). Caleb Danvers wins the barn duel only after his father, William Danvers III, transfers his own share of the Power and dies. Caleb’s blast engulfs Chase Collins, but no body is found, so the film never confirms that Chase is dead. Sarah, Kate and Pogue are freed from Chase’s spells, while Caleb, Sarah, Pogue, Kate, Reid, Tyler and Evelyn survive.
This is the 2006 Screen Gems dark-fantasy horror film starring Steven Strait and Sebastian Stan—not Guy Ritchie’s 2023 war drama about Sergeant John Kinley and interpreter Ahmed. The two films share a title but have completely different stories, characters and endings.

What happens at the end of The Covenant (2006)?
On Caleb’s eighteenth birthday, Chase kidnaps Sarah Wenham and takes her to Old Putnam Barn. He has Sarah spellbound and orders Caleb to give him his share of the Power by saying the transfer formula: I will you.
Caleb refuses because willing a share kills the giver. Chase is already Ascended and possesses more than one share, so he overwhelms Caleb in their first exchange.
Caleb reaches his own Ascension during the fight, at the exact minute his eighteenth birthday arrives. That surge still is not enough. At the Danvers house, Evelyn begs William to save their son. William remotely wills his Power to Caleb, sacrificing himself. Caleb now carries his own share and William’s. The added strength lets him strike Chase with a blast that engulfs him in fire.

Sarah, Kate and Pogue awaken when Chase’s control breaks. Firefighters searching the destroyed barn tell Caleb and Sarah that they found no third person in the wreckage. The film cuts away without showing Chase’s body. In the longer ending beat described in plot recaps, Caleb repairs the damaged windshield with magic while Sarah watches, frightened by how casually he is already using his expanded abilities.
The ending therefore has a definite victory but an deliberately unresolved villain: William is dead, Chase is missing, and the surviving characters leave Ipswich with the possibility of another confrontation.
Is Chase Collins dead?
No. Chase is engulfed in flame, but the movie does not provide a corpse or a confirmed death. The broken hexes prove that his control has ended; the missing body leaves his physical fate open.
Some older plot summaries say the absent body suggests that Chase escaped, while the current short plot summary simply stops after Caleb’s attack. The safest canon statement is that Chase’s status is unknown. He could have survived by teleporting or another use of the Power, but the film never shows that escape, so calling him definitely alive goes beyond the evidence.
Who survives the final confrontation?
| Character | Outcome | What the film establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Caleb Danvers | Alive | Ascends, receives William’s share and defeats Chase; leaves with Sarah. |
| Sarah Wenham | Alive | Wakes when Chase’s barn spell ends and drives away with Caleb. |
| Pogue Parry | Alive | Recovers after Chase’s curse and earlier hospitalization are lifted. |
| Kate Tunney | Alive | Survives the spider hex and the allergic crisis caused by it. |
| Reid Garwin | Alive | Is kept away from the barn at the Halloween dance with Tyler. |
| Tyler Simms | Alive | Also remains at the dance; “Sims” appears in some databases, but the film’s character is generally spelled Simms. |
| Evelyn Danvers | Alive | Begins the intervention by pleading with William to save Caleb. |
| William Danvers III | Dead | Transfers his share to Caleb and dies instantly, the sacrifice that changes the duel. |
| Chase Collins | Unconfirmed | Consumed by Caleb’s fire attack; no third body is found. |
A Spenser Academy student is also found dead earlier in the film. The plot identifies a student but does not give a reliable name. Fan-wiki material attributes that death to Chase’s car hex and a later darkling taunt. Chase’s biological father dies after giving Chase his share, and fan-wiki backstory says his adoptive parents die in a glamoured car crash; that adoptive-parent detail is not part of the film’s concise published plot synopsis.
How does the Power work in the film?
The Power is an inherited magical force whose origin is unknown. It passes through five colonial bloodlines connected to the Ipswich colony, develops in adolescence and becomes a life-sustaining force after Ascension. The rules matter because every transfer is also a death sentence.

Where did the Power come from?
The opening narration says, No one really knows how the Power came to be. Not even the Book of Damnation recorded its beginnings. But those who mastered it have always been hunted.
Five families formed a covenant of silence in seventeenth-century Ipswich, Massachusetts. Four lines remain in the present. The fifth was believed to have been destroyed during the Salem witch hunts; Kate explains to Sarah that the boys are descendants of the five families and that the fifth was supposedly killed off.
The film uses Salem-era atmosphere rather than presenting a documented historical account. Its modern “Sons of Ipswich” are the surviving male heirs of those lines.
What happens at 13 and 18?
At 13, a warlock receives his first taste of the Power. Caleb describes that moment as a test, after which the boys become stronger through their teenage years. At 18, the warlock Ascends, normally at the exact minute of his birth. Ascension dramatically increases the Power and marks the point at which it becomes inseparable from the user’s life.
A fan-wiki entry places Caleb’s Ascension at 11:12 p.m. and calls the mature Power “a thousand times stronger.” The film itself establishes only that the increase is enormous; it does not supply an official multiplier.

After Ascension, the Power functions like a life-force addiction. The more a warlock uses it, the more it consumes him, causing premature aging, insanity and eventually death. William is 44 but appears close to death because of his long abuse. Caleb identifies him in the old colonial house by saying, This is William Danvers III. My father. He’s 44 years old.
Chase says nobody taught him those limits. He describes being hooked before learning about “the effects, the damage, the addiction.” Pogue makes the same danger explicit when he jokes after a cliff jump, It’s not like it’s going to kill us. Yet.
The line is a warning disguised as teenage bravado.

How is a share transferred?
An Ascended warlock can will his share to another person by saying, I will you.
The giver dies immediately. That rule explains William’s heroic death and Caleb’s refusal to accept a share from Reid, Pogue or Tyler. Sarah suggests that one of the other Sons could make the sacrifice, but Caleb will not buy victory with a friend’s life.
Shares can be stacked. A recipient can carry his own inheritance plus another warlock’s share, which is why Chase is stronger than a newly Ascended Caleb and why William’s intervention reverses the fight. Chase obtained his biological father’s share before returning to seek Caleb’s.

What does a warlock look like when the Power is active?
The tell is visual: the eyes turn completely black and gold sparks travel through the body. The effect appears whenever a character channels a substantial spell, making the supernatural action legible even when the exact ability differs.
What powers are shown on screen?
The film presents the Power as a broad magical toolkit rather than a fixed list of spells. The following abilities are demonstrated by the Sons, especially Caleb and Chase.
| Ability | Film example |
|---|---|
| Telekinesis and psychokinesis | Levitation, concussive blasts and a combined effort that lifts Tyler’s Hummer from a cliff. |
| Enhanced strength and speed | Physical performance beyond ordinary human limits during fights and stunts. |
| Pyrokinesis | Caleb’s final blast turns Chase’s body into a ball of flame. |
| Aerokinesis | Air movement and force are used as part of the boys’ demonstrations and combat. |
| Levitation and short flight | Warlocks raise themselves or others and move through the air for brief periods. |
| Teleportation | Chase appears across long distances; the boys also relocate objects and people through magic. |
| Technopathy | Reid restarts Sarah’s car, while Caleb’s car disassembles and reassembles around a truck. |
| Mesmerism and suggestion | Chase influences victims and keeps Sarah under control in the barn. |
| Glamour | Chase impersonates Caleb to gain access to Sarah’s dormitory. |
| Creation hexes | Chase manifests spiders, triggering Kate’s terrifying allergic crisis. |
| Darklings and dead-spirit manifestations | Chase uses a darkling presence to torment and threaten his victims. |
| Telekinetic tendrils and weather influence | More specialized effects associated with Chase’s advanced, multi-share Power. |
The movie never supplies a formal hierarchy showing which ability is strongest. Power level depends on age, Ascension, practice, physical condition and the number of shares a warlock carries.
Why does William’s sacrifice decide the fight?
Caleb is not simply stronger because he turns 18. Ascension gives him a major increase, but Chase has already Ascended and has absorbed his biological father’s share. William’s transfer gives Caleb a second share, matching the structural advantage Chase brought to the barn.

William’s death also resolves the film’s moral argument. The Power is tempting because it offers speed, strength and freedom, yet every serious use extracts a life. William chooses a deliberate, instantaneous sacrifice to prevent Chase from taking Caleb’s share by force. Caleb wins without killing Reid, Pogue or Tyler for their inheritances.
Who is Chase Collins before the barn scene?
Chase is the long-banished fifth Son, introduced at Spenser Academy as a charismatic transfer student. Fan-wiki genealogy gives his birth name as Chase Goodwin Pope, identifies Hagen Goodwin Pope as an ancestor and John Putnam as his biological father, and says he was adopted by the Collins family after his mother died. The film’s tighter account establishes that he was adopted, manifested the Power at 13 without instruction, found his biological father, took that man’s share and Ascended.
Because Chase learned the rules alone, he treated magic as an unlimited supply and became addicted before understanding its physical cost. He believes collecting the shares of other Ascended warlocks will offset the aging that is destroying him. The dead student, Sarah’s shower stalking, Kate’s spiders and Pogue’s crash are all part of his campaign to isolate the four surviving lines and force Caleb’s surrender.
At the barn, Chase demands that Caleb “say the words.” Caleb’s refusal, followed by William’s remote transfer, is the point at which Chase’s plan fails. His disappearance afterward is the film’s deliberate sequel hook.
Did The Covenant get a sequel or prequel?
No theatrical sequel followed, and no official source confirms a sequel story that resolves Chase’s fate. A four-issue Top Cow/Spacedog graphic-novel prequel by Aron Coleite and Tone Rodriguez was published around the film, with Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri credited as associate producer.
The comic begins when the boys first receive the Power—“Happy Birthday—you’re warlocks”—and leans toward 1980s horror and The Crucible rather than a straightforward Harry Potter-style fantasy. In that version, one boy is called Miller rather than Tyler. It expands the mythology but does not provide an on-screen answer about the missing body at Putnam Barn.

What should you remember about the ending?
- This is the 2006 warlock film, not the 2023 Afghanistan-set war drama.
- The Power first appears at 13 and fully matures through Ascension at 18.
- It behaves like an addictive life force: overuse ages, damages and can kill its user.
- “I will you” transfers a share and kills the giver.
- William’s confirmed death gives Caleb the second share needed to overpower Chase.
- Chase burns, disappears and leaves no body; the film does not declare him dead or alive.
- Caleb, Sarah, Pogue, Kate, Reid, Tyler and Evelyn survive, and no sequel resolves the cliffhanger.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does “I will you” mean in the movie?
It is the spoken formula for willing one warlock’s share of the Power into another person. The transfer is not symbolic or temporary: the donor dies as soon as the share passes, which is why Caleb rejects the offer of a friend’s Power.
How precise is Caleb’s Ascension time?
A fan-wiki timeline places it at 11:12 p.m., matching the film’s rule that Ascension occurs at the exact minute of birth. The movie confirms the birthday timing but never presents an official studio timecode or numerical power multiplier.
What does the graphic-novel prequel add?
The Top Cow prequel starts with the boys’ first manifestation of magic rather than their mature powers at Spenser Academy. It uses the name Miller for the character occupying Tyler’s place and emphasizes a darker, Crucible-influenced tone.

Why does Sarah react badly to Caleb’s repaired windshield?
The repair shows that Caleb is already treating post-Ascension magic as an everyday convenience, not only as a weapon. Sarah has just escaped a supernatural kidnapping, so the effortless display makes clear that Caleb’s new abilities may create a different kind of danger.
