There is no verified universal “best” preset for The Division 2. On PC, start with your display’s native resolution, run the in-game benchmark, then change one graphics option at a time and keep only adjustments that improve your own results without making the game harder to read. For controls and accessibility, choose settings for your preferred input and comfort rather than copying an unverified competitive setup. Ubisoft documents the game’s PC graphics options and benchmark, but its published PC specifications date to 2019; they are not current performance tests.
What should you change first?
Set a clear target before adjusting graphics: for example, a stable experience at your display’s resolution, or a lower resolution with steadier performance. The right balance depends on your hardware and screen, so treat each adjustment as an experiment rather than a preset recommendation.

- Record your starting point. Note the display resolution, graphics options, display mode, and any frame-rate limit currently in use. This gives you a way to undo a change that makes the picture worse or performance less consistent.
- Choose the display mode you actually use. If you normally play fullscreen, test fullscreen. If you use borderless or windowed mode, test that mode consistently. Switching modes between runs can change behavior independently of a quality setting.
- Run the built-in benchmark. An archived Ubisoft staff walkthrough places it at Settings > Benchmark and says the result can be saved as a CSV with a screenshot. Menu names may differ in the installed build, so check the current menus if that path is not present. Ubisoft staff’s archived performance and troubleshooting guidance describes the benchmark.
- Repeat runs when a result looks unusual. A background task, shader compilation event, or first-run hitch can make a single result misleading. Use the same scene and wait for the game to settle before treating a change as meaningful; do not average numbers from different settings or routes.
- Change one option at a time. Re-run the same benchmark after each change. Avoid changing resolution, several quality options, and the frame limiter together: if the result changes, you would not know which adjustment mattered.
- Check actual play as well as the result. A benchmark can help compare runs on the same PC, but a setting also has to preserve useful visual detail and feel comfortable during play. Look at busy combat, distant objects, dark interiors, and interface text rather than judging only a quiet scene.
- Keep a change only if it helps. If the result is worse, or the visual trade-off is not worth it, restore the previous value before trying the next option. Save a screenshot or note of the setting that worked so a later update or driver change is easier to diagnose.
Ubisoft documents uncapped frame rate, adjustable display resolution and HUD, widescreen support, variable refresh rate, and HDR for PC. These are supported capabilities, not guarantees that every monitor or graphics setup can use them. The official PC features and specifications describe those options.
What is a sensible target?
Decide whether your priority is image clarity, a steadier frame rate, or lower input delay. A native-resolution target favors readable text and sharper edges. A lower rendered resolution or a conservative quality setting can be reasonable when it prevents distracting drops. There is no verified number that is ideal for every monitor, so judge consistency and readability together. If your display has variable-refresh support, test it as part of the complete display setup rather than assuming it will compensate for every hitch.

Which PC graphics settings are worth testing?
Start with resolution because it sets the image-clarity baseline, then test the options Ubisoft staff identifies as potentially consequential. That list is a troubleshooting checklist, not a ranking: no universal frame-rate gains or best quality values are established for each option.
Resolution and resolution scale
Use your display’s native resolution as the starting point for clear text and edges. If performance is inadequate, test the game’s resolution scale separately and compare benchmark results. Lowering rendered resolution can trade sharpness for performance; the useful point is the one that works on your hardware, not a prescribed numeric percentage.
Keep the desktop and game resolution distinction in mind. A display can remain at its native output while the game renders internally at another scale, but the resulting image may look softer. Check character outlines, small HUD text, and distant signage after every change. If you cannot read mission or inventory information comfortably, the performance gain is not automatically worthwhile.
Volumetric fog and ambient occlusion
Test volumetric fog and ambient occlusion one at a time. They are among the options Ubisoft staff flags for potential performance impact, but the available documentation does not establish a universal quality level or a specific FPS cost. Keep each effect if its visual contribution is worth the performance difference on your PC.
Fog can alter the appearance of outdoor scenes and lighting, while ambient occlusion contributes contact shading around objects. Those descriptions explain why you might notice a visual change; they do not establish which setting is the best sacrifice. Compare screenshots from the same benchmark moment and then verify the result in a real mission.
Object detail, particle detail, and sky textures
Object detail, particle detail, and high-resolution sky textures also appear on Ubisoft’s performance checklist. Lowering one may be a reasonable experiment if a benchmark falls short of your target, but there is no verified basis for claiming that one of them always produces the largest gain. Compare the same route and inspect the image before deciding.
Object detail can affect how much geometry remains visible at distance; particle detail can change the density of effects during explosions or firefights; high-resolution sky textures primarily affect the sky image. Their practical value depends on what you notice while playing. Avoid lowering several together and then attributing the entire change to one option.
Anisotropic filtering, frame limit, and reduced latency
Ubisoft staff also calls out anisotropic filtering, the custom FPS limit, and the reduced-latency option as settings to investigate. Try the frame limit when you want to compare pacing, and test reduced latency if responsiveness is a concern. Neither option is a guaranteed cure for stutter, and no particular cap is established as right for every monitor.

When testing a cap, compare both the benchmark output and camera movement during ordinary play. A cap that appears smooth in one scene may not feel identical in a crowded encounter. Reduced latency can be useful to investigate when controls feel delayed, but it cannot correct every cause of stutter, unstable frame delivery, or a saturated system.
How should you log a graphics test?
- Write down the option and its original value.
- Run the benchmark and save its CSV or screenshot if the installed build provides those controls.
- Change only that option, then repeat the same run.
- Record average or displayed results together with any obvious hitching or image-quality problem.
- Test the candidate setting in a representative mission before keeping it.
This procedure is slower than copying a preset, but it prevents a common pitfall: lowering several settings, seeing a higher result, and not knowing which visual compromise caused it. It also gives you a reproducible baseline after a driver, operating-system, or game update.
Should you use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12?
There is no documented universal winner. Ubisoft’s 2019 PC specifications list DirectX 11 or 12 for its lower performance tiers and DirectX 12 for its 1440p and 4K tiers; those recommendations are historical hardware guidance, not proof that DX12 performs better on a current system.
If the installed game offers both modes, compare them on your own PC and keep the mode that runs reliably. Use the same graphics settings, display mode, and benchmark procedure for each comparison. Give each mode enough ordinary play to reveal crashes, hitching, or input problems; a higher single benchmark result is not useful if the mode is unstable for you. Do not infer a modern performance advantage from the older specification table.
| Ubisoft’s 2019 target | Published graphics card examples | DirectX listed |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 FPS | Radeon R9 280X / GeForce GTX 780 | 11 or 12 |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | Radeon RX 480 / GeForce GTX 970 | 11 or 12 |
| 1440p at 60 FPS | Radeon RX Vega 56 / GeForce GTX 1070 | 12 |
| 4K at 60 FPS | Radeon VII / GeForce RTX 2080 Ti | 12 |
These are Ubisoft’s published targets and GPU examples from 2019, not current measured results or recommendations for buying hardware. They also do not account for your processor, memory, drivers, background applications, thermals, or later game changes. The same official specification page is the source for the figures.
Do not assume that options such as DLSS, FSR, XeSS, ray tracing, or frame generation are available in the current game. The checked official material does not establish their current native availability. If you see a driver-level or third-party option, treat it as separate from an in-game feature and do not present it as an official game setting.

HDR requires a screen that supports HDR. A compatible connection and an operating-system display configuration may also be necessary, but the game-specific requirement established by Ubisoft Help is an HDR-capable screen. Ubisoft’s Help guidance says to adjust the game’s HDR controls to personal preference; it does not provide a universal brightness value that should be copied by every player.
- Confirm that the display you are using supports HDR and that HDR is enabled for that display in the system settings.
- Open Settings > Video in the game; if the installed build uses different labels, follow its current menu.
- Adjust HDR Peak Brightness and HDR Peak Brightness for UI Elements to suit your screen and viewing preference.
- Check both the game image and interface for legibility in a bright scene and a dark scene, then revise the values if either looks uncomfortable.
- If the result looks washed out or difficult to read, compare with HDR disabled and verify the display’s own HDR mode before changing unrelated graphics options.
Do not buy an HDR monitor merely to unlock ordinary resolution or frame-rate settings. HDR and variable refresh rate are optional display features; a normal compatible display can still be used for the rest of the graphics setup. Ubisoft also documents variable-refresh-rate support on PC. That capability depends on compatible display hardware; it is not a setting that makes an unsupported monitor variable-refresh-rate capable. The company’s PC features page lists HDR and variable refresh rate among the documented features.

Which controller and gameplay options should you use?
Choose a controller based on platform, official support, and the hand feel you prefer—not on an unverified claim that a particular controller improves aim assist. For PC, Ubisoft lists the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, DualSense, and DualShock 4, as well as keyboard and mouse, in its supported peripherals guidance.
For a straightforward purchase, an Xbox Wireless Controller is the most directly documented mainstream choice in that list. The Elite Series 2 and DualSense are alternatives for readers who prefer their shape, features, or existing platform ecosystem. This is a compatibility comparison, not a claim that one device is more accurate. Check the platform column in Ubisoft’s guidance before buying, especially if you intend to use a console rather than a PC.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ubisoft cautions that other controllers may work without being officially supported and might need third-party software. Support is platform-specific: do not assume that the PC list establishes compatibility or identical menu options on PlayStation or Xbox. An input layer recognizing a device is not the same as Ubisoft guaranteeing every button, vibration function, or prompt. The same guidance provides the official supported-device information.
Aim assist and vibration
An archived Ubisoft staff accessibility post says, “Aim assist is available in the game,” and places Aim Assist and Gamepad Vibration under Controls. Try aim assist according to your preference, and adjust or disable vibration if it is distracting, uncomfortable, or makes it harder to concentrate. Because the post is archived, confirm the live menu labels in your installed build rather than relying on an old screenshot or exact path.
Aim assist is a comfort and control preference here, not a verified competitive advantage. Test it in ordinary encounters with the sensitivity and layout you already use. If you change aim assist and sensitivity simultaneously, you will not know which change affected your hand feel.
Subtitles, color-vision options, and UI contrast
The same archived staff guidance places subtitles and their customization under Language, and colorblind modes plus High Contrast UI under Accessibility. It names options for deuteranopia, tritanopia, and protanopia. These settings serve different needs: subtitles aid access to spoken information, color filters adjust color presentation, and high contrast changes interface visibility. Try the relevant option and check that important on-screen information is easier for you to distinguish.

What should you do if controller input is scrambled on Steam?
If the controls are mapped incorrectly, start with basic troubleshooting before changing configuration files. In a February 26, 2025 Steam support reply, Ubisoft developer Ubi-WheelyDuck suggested trying Steam Big Picture and Steam Input if initial troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.

The developer’s reply is on the Steam support discussion. It is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee that Steam Input will fix every controller or mapping issue.
Can Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations help?
They are an optional operating-system experiment, not a proven fix for The Division 2. Microsoft says the Windows 11 feature applies to eligible DirectX 10 and 11 games in windowed or borderless mode and is configured under System > Display > Graphics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you use one of those display modes and want to check the feature, change it as a separate experiment and compare the same game scenario before and after. Record whether the change affects frame pacing, responsiveness, or only the benchmark result. The Microsoft guidance does not establish a performance improvement for this particular game, and it is not a reason to prefer DirectX 12. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization instructions for eligibility and configuration details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you leave alone until you can verify it?
A settings guide is most useful when it separates documented options from assumed ones. Do not add an option to a “best settings” list merely because it appears in another game or in a GPU driver utility.
- Do not copy a numeric sensitivity value as a universal recommendation. No optimal sensitivity value is established by the available official material. Start with what feels controllable, then change one input variable at a time.
- Do not assume a current upscaling or ray-tracing toggle exists. Current native availability for DLSS, FSR, XeSS, ray tracing, and frame generation is not established by the checked primary sources.
- Do not treat an old GPU tier as a buying guide. Ubisoft’s 2019 target configurations are dated published specifications, not current shopping recommendations. A newer or different GPU still needs to be tested with your processor, resolution, and settings.
- Do not copy PC graphics paths to console. The benchmark and PC graphics checklist are PC guidance; the available sources do not confirm equivalent console controls.
- Do not assume HDR is required. It requires an HDR-capable screen but is optional for players using a standard display.
- Do not use a third-party controller edit as an official fix. Unlisted controllers may work, but Ubisoft says they are not officially supported and may require third-party software.
Menu names and options can change between builds. Where an older Ubisoft post gives a precise path, use it as a starting point and verify what the installed version actually displays. If a setting is missing, do not substitute a similarly named driver option and call it a game feature.
How can you tell whether a change is really helping?
Look for repeatable improvement rather than a single impressive number. Run the same benchmark with the same resolution, display mode, and frame limit; save the result; then spend a few minutes in a demanding real-game situation. A setting is a keeper when it meets your target, preserves information you need to see, and does not introduce instability or uncomfortable controls.

If two options produce similar results, keep the one that looks clearer. If a quality reduction produces no meaningful change, restore it and test another item from Ubisoft’s checklist. This approach also avoids unnecessary purchases: the documented settings can be tuned on existing hardware, while a monitor or controller is an optional choice based on your platform and preferences, not a prerequisite for following the guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does The Division 2 support a 21:9 ultrawide monitor?
Ubisoft’s PC feature list documents widescreen support, but that broad statement does not specify every aspect ratio, resolution, or monitor configuration. Confirm that your target resolution appears in the installed game’s display options.

Can I use the benchmark to compare a console’s graphics settings?
The documented benchmark and the graphics-option checklist are PC-focused. The available guidance does not establish a matching benchmark workflow or equivalent adjustable graphics controls for console versions.
Will a third-party controller definitely work if Steam Input recognizes it?
No. Ubisoft says unlisted controllers may work, but they are not officially supported and may require third-party software; recognition by an input layer does not guarantee that every in-game control will map correctly.
Do Ubisoft’s 2019 GPU examples still represent what I need to run the game?
They are historical target configurations, not a current compatibility check for a particular PC. Check the game’s current platform requirements and compare performance on your own hardware rather than using those examples as a present-day guarantee.
How do I turn on aim assist?
An archived Ubisoft staff accessibility post says aim assist is available and places it under Controls. Open the current Controls menu and verify the label in your installed build; the archived path may not match every modern menu.
What do I need to enable HDR?
Use an HDR-capable screen, then open the game’s Video settings and adjust HDR Peak Brightness and HDR Peak Brightness for UI Elements to your preference. Ubisoft does not establish universal brightness numbers.
Is DirectX 12 always faster than DirectX 11?
No universal winner is documented. Ubisoft’s 2019 table lists DX11 or DX12 for lower tiers and DX12 for 1440p and 4K targets, but you should compare available modes on your own PC and keep the stable result.
Should I buy a new monitor or controller for these settings?
No purchase is required. HDR needs an HDR-capable display, and controller choice should follow platform support and comfort. Ubisoft’s old GPU examples are not current buying recommendations.
Why is my controller input scrambled on Steam?
Confirm the device is supported, try the game’s own controller options, and, if initial troubleshooting fails, try Steam Big Picture and Steam Input as suggested by Ubisoft developer Ubi-WheelyDuck in a February 26, 2025 support reply. Avoid treating community configuration edits as official fixes.
The Bottom Line
Use native resolution as your clarity baseline, benchmark before and after each single change, and test DX11 or DX12 for stability rather than assuming a winner. HDR, variable refresh rate, controller support, aim assist, subtitles, color options, and UI contrast are preference and compatibility choices: verify the installed menus and keep what improves your own play.
