What happened to the BioWare team?
The January 2025 statement said the next Mass Effect needed only a core group and that many colleagues had been matched to positions elsewhere at EA. The closure ended BioWare as an operating studio, but the available announcements do not provide a complete employee-by-employee disposition.
The Associated Press, citing Bloomberg’s reporting around the closure, described approximately 400 EA layoffs, including about 50 people at BioWare. Did EA cancel the next Mass Effect?
EA ended the early-development effort that BioWare had been pursuing. That means the project, in the form and phase described by BioWare before the closure, is no longer moving forward. Is Mass Effect dead after BioWare closed?

Where does Mass Effect Legendary Edition fit?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition, released in 2021 according to Tom’s Hardware, remains part of the series’ published catalog. That history also explains the strategic tension behind the closure. BioWare’s reputation was built primarily on authored, single-player role-playing games, while Anthem asked the studio to sustain a multiplayer model.
