Scout is the information and long-range route, Hacker focuses on breaching and defense disruption, and Demolisher turns destruction into a game plan. The right first purchase depends on how you intend to help your team and which body type you play.

- Identify one missing team function. Add reveal, mobility, revival, protection, or breach capability according to what your squad lacks.
- Buy a flexible primary weapon. A broadly applicable rifle or submachine gun is easier to learn across many fights than a sniper, melee weapon, bow, or another specialist option.
- Keep experimenting. Playstyles are templates, not permanent locks. Swap items as you earn more VRs and use reserve slots to test alternatives.
There is no official “best weapon” ranking to follow. Embark’s published material describes what equipment does, but it does not provide a universal balance tier list, win-rate table, or single best first purchase. The recommendations below are practical ways to cover situations, not developer rankings.

How THE FINALS unlock system works
Playstyles are starter templates
Embark’s Playstyles Help Center page, updated July 8, 2026, lists 11 pre-built Contestant templates. Each combines one specialization, one weapon, and two gadgets so that a new player can enter a match with a coherent job instead of assembling every slot from scratch.
Three Playstyles are unlocked by default. You receive a Playstyle Token for a fourth choice, then earn additional tokens progressively during your first 20 rounds. That makes the early token a tutorial decision: select the style whose movement, range, and team responsibility you will actually practice.
VRs buy individual equipment
Embark’s progression guidance, updated July 23, 2026, says you earn VRs with every match. VRs are spent from the Equipment screen to unlock specializations, weapons, and gadgets. A token chooses a Playstyle package; VRs let you customize beyond those packages.

What a custom loadout contains
A custom loadout has one specialization, one weapon, and three gadgets. It also provides four reserve equipment slots. The extra gadget slot matters when you move from a template to a tailored build: you can preserve the role’s core tool while adding a counter for a map, objective, or enemy strategy.
Choose a role before you choose a purchase
Think in terms of the contribution you want to make every round. These three Playstyle routes provide a useful starting map:

These labels describe the intended play patterns of the named Playstyles; they do not establish that one route is stronger. If you dislike a role’s range or tempo, choose another even if a friend calls it optimal. The best first unlock is the one you will use enough to learn.
Which first weapon should you buy with VRs?
Start with a weapon that lets you participate in ordinary engagements before spending on a narrow specialty. Your body type determines the catalogue available to you, so a weapon recommendation must begin with Light, Medium, or Heavy rather than a universal list.

The table is a catalogue, not a ranking. Embark does not publish comparative “best weapon” statistics in the cited progression material. A flexible rifle or SMG is recommended because it exposes you to more ordinary fights and gives you feedback on aim, cover, timing, and objective play. A specialist weapon can be the right second purchase when you have a specific plan, such as close-range destruction or long-range overwatch.
A simple weapon decision test
- Can you use it in your next three likely fights? If the answer is only “when the enemy stands at one exact distance,” wait.
- Does it match your body type and movement? The catalogue is body-type specific; do not spend VRs on an item unavailable to your chosen Contestant.
- Does it add a new answer or duplicate one you already have? Early VRs are more valuable when they expand your options.
- Will you practice it repeatedly? Familiarity is more useful than owning a weapon you rarely select.
Which gadgets are worth unlocking early?
Prioritize the function your squad cannot currently perform. Embark’s equipment descriptions identify the following jobs:

These pairings are function-based recommendations. They are not evidence that one gadget has a higher win rate. A gadget is valuable when it solves a problem your current loadout cannot solve, and less valuable when three teammates already bring the same answer.

Playstyle Token or individual weapon: which comes first?
Spend the token when you still need a complete game plan
Choose a Playstyle first if you are still learning the game’s movement, destruction, and objective rhythm. The package gives you a specialization, weapon, and two gadgets that are designed to work together. That reduces the number of simultaneous decisions and lets you learn what each slot contributes.
Spend VRs when you know the gap
Buy an individual item when your current package exposes a clear weakness. For example, if your squad repeatedly loses track of opponents, an information gadget addresses that specific failure. If every approach is blocked by cover or defenses, a breach or disruption tool is more relevant than another damage option.
The opportunity cost is real in the short term because tokens and VRs are progression choices, but the system is built for continued unlocking through play. You do not need to identify a permanent main on your first evening.
Three practical first-unlock paths
Path A: information-first Scout
Use the Scout route if you enjoy mobility and long-range engagements. Keep a weapon you can operate while rotating, then add Sonar Grenade when your team lacks reliable enemy locations. A mobility option such as Zipline or Jump Pad can be the next addition if reaching height or escaping after a pick is the recurring problem. Do not spend your first VRs on a second long-range specialty merely because Scout can fight at distance; first ensure the squad can locate and reposition around the information you create.
Path B: disruption-first Hacker
Use Hacker if the interesting part of a fight is opening a defended route. Glitch Grenade is the natural answer when enemy gadgets or shields stop your approach. Add movement or cover only after you have a way to cross the space you opened. This path rewards timing: disable the defense when teammates are ready to move, rather than throwing the tool where it cannot affect the push.

Path C: destruction-first Demolisher
Use Demolisher if you want the environment itself to be your weapon. Thermal Bore, Explosive Mine, or RPG-7 can support a breach where available, while Dome Shield or Barricade can protect the exposed team during the follow-up. Choose one breach purpose first—opening a route, removing cover, or forcing opponents out—rather than filling every slot with explosives and leaving no way to revive or reposition.
Build a balanced custom loadout
Once you move beyond a Playstyle template, assign each of the three gadget slots a distinct job. A reliable planning pattern is:
- Information or control: reveal enemies, disable their equipment, or limit movement.
- Team survival or access: revive, protect, or create a route.
- Objective pressure: breach, destroy cover, or force opponents to move.
Use the four reserve slots for map-dependent or matchup-dependent tools instead of carrying five versions of the same effect. For instance, keep Smoke Grenade available for a sightline-heavy situation, APS Turret for projectile pressure, and a movement tool for a map where rotations decide the objective. Swap before the next round when the need is clear; reserves exist so experimentation does not require rebuilding your entire identity.

Chasing a tier list that does not exist
There is no official universal ranking in the cited material. Replace “What is strongest?” with “What problem will this solve for my team?” Track the situations that repeatedly stop you and buy for those situations.

Buying a specialist before learning your body type
Snipers, melee weapons, bows, shields, launchers, and other narrow choices can be satisfying, but they teach fewer ordinary engagements if you are still learning fundamentals. Start flexible, then specialize after you know which ranges and movement patterns you enjoy.

Duplicating a teammate’s gadget
Three players carrying the same answer can leave the squad without revival, movement, information, or cover. Before spending VRs, ask what your current team cannot do.
Ignoring the reserve slots
A custom loadout includes four reserves. Leaving them unused turns a flexible system into a fixed build. Keep alternatives ready and change them when the objective, map, or opponent makes the original plan unsuitable.
Treating the first token as irreversible
The first 20 rounds provide additional Playstyle-token progression, and VRs arrive with every match. Pick a role you can play now, learn from it, and adjust as your options grow instead of delaying every choice while searching for certainty.
A concise decision procedure before each purchase
- Check your body type and the equipment available to it.
- Name the team function you are missing: information, breach, defense disruption, revival, mobility, protection, destruction, movement denial, or concealment.
- Choose the least specialized item that solves that function.
- Test it for several matches before judging it; determine whether the limitation was the item, your timing, or the situation.
- Move the item to a reserve slot if it is useful only on certain maps or against certain setups.
This process keeps your early progression focused on expanding answers. It also respects the way Embark designed Playstyles: as introductions to varied gameplay that preserve room for customization rather than as permanent classes.
