The first look at A Minecraft Movie makes its central contrast impossible to miss: familiar blocky terrain and creatures rendered as live-action surroundings, with a playful adventure unfolding inside them. Warner Bros. published the teaser on September 4, 2024; Minecraft’s official first-look post is dated September 3.
What the first Minecraft movie teaser shows
The teaser drops viewers into a colorful Overworld of cubic landscapes and Minecraft-inspired creatures. A group of people arrives through a portal and has to find its footing in a world that looks like the game translated into live action.

The details that define the first look
- The visual premise: recognizable block-shaped terrain and creatures become the film’s physical environment.
- The setup: a portal brings four visitors into the Overworld, where they must navigate an unfamiliar place.
- The tone: the teaser mixes discovery with broad, playful comedy rather than presenting the world as a straight game recreation.
Collider’s September 4, 2024 article singled out the pink sheep, the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour,” and the cast’s reactions as memorable moments. Its description of the first look as balancing wonder with “what the hell” captures that article’s interpretation, not a measured response from all viewers. Collider’s article

Why “exactly what you expected” fits the teaser
The headline is an editorial reaction to the teaser’s immediate identity: Minecraft’s distinct visual vocabulary is recognizable, but it is placed around live-action performers in a deliberately eccentric adventure. The gap between the block-built setting and the cast’s reactions supplies much of the first look’s comic energy. That is a judgment about the trailer’s presentation, not a claim that every fan had the same response.
The teaser establishes the premise and tone without laying out the full story. Its main promise is the collision of a game-inspired world with a group of outsiders who do not know how to handle it.

Who is in A Minecraft Movie?
Official materials name Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge among the cast. Jared Hess directed. Jack Black plays Steve, the crafter who helps the four visitors on their journey.
The visitors named in the official synopsis are Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn. These are the characters at the center of the teaser’s portal-arrival setup, rather than a list of game characters.

When the first look came out—and how it differs from the later trailer
Warner Bros.’ verified teaser listing and Collider’s exact-title article were published September 4, 2024. Minecraft’s official first-look post carries a September 3, 2024 date, a one-day difference between the publications’ timestamps. The official channels call the September video a teaser or first look; the headline’s use of “trailer” is informal.
Minecraft published a separate article for the official trailer on November 18, 2024. That later trailer expands the story and introduces more of the adventurers and mobs, so it is not the first look discussed here. Warner Bros.’ 2024 teaser description gave April 4, 2025 as the film’s planned North American theatrical release date; that was a historical plan, not a statement about present availability.
