But the evidence available does not establish that it was the first, biggest, or most damaging breach in video-game history. “Unprecedented” is defensible only as a description of the incident’s striking combination of exposed material—not as a verified historical record.
What happened in the Insomniac Games hack?
In December 2023, the ransomware group Rhysida claimed it had breached Insomniac Games and demanded a ransom. After the studio declined to pay the reported $2 million demand, the group released data, according to contemporaneous reporting by Axios. Axios reported that the archive was about 1.67 terabytes and contained a little over 1.3 million files. Those are reported figures, not independently audited totals; Axios also cautioned that the documents it had reviewed were not verified.
The archive reportedly included internal development material, schedules, messages, and employee information. Insomniac confirmed that personal information and early development details about Marvel’s Wolverine were among the stolen data. The breach therefore touched both people’s records and unreleased creative work, making it unusually broad and publicly consequential.
What information did Insomniac confirm was exposed?
In a statement published December 22, 2023, the studio said: “We are aware that the stolen data includes personal information belonging to our employees, former employees, and independent contractors.” Game Informer reproduced the statement and reported on the incident’s contents: Game Informer.

Insomniac also confirmed that early development details for Marvel’s Wolverine were included. At the time, it described the game as being in early production and said, “Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned.” That was the studio’s position in December 2023, not an update on the game’s current status.
How much data did Rhysida leak?
Axios reported a dump of about 1.67 TB, or a little more than 1.3 million files. Because the figures describe the reported archive and were not independently audited, they should not be treated as a definitive count. Nor do they reveal how many people were affected, how sensitive each file was, or what lasting harm resulted.

Was the Insomniac hack the biggest video-game leak?
The available evidence does not support a categorical answer. “Biggest” depends on what is being measured: archive volume, exposed personal records, unreleased creative or source-code assets, disruption to operations, or verified financial and human consequences. The incident reporting documents the Insomniac archive, but the cited industry-context reports do not provide a consistent comparison across game studios.
To establish a record, a comparison would need reliable figures for the same dimensions across earlier incidents, with comparable methods and verified claims. Archive size alone cannot settle the question: a large dump does not necessarily mean more people were harmed or that the business impact was greater.

Does “unprecedented” accurately describe the breach?
Not as a proven historical superlative. The breach was large, wide-ranging, and high-impact in the publicly reported combination of internal game-development material and employee records. But the available reporting does not demonstrate that it was the first incident of its kind, the largest gaming leak, or the most damaging breach in the industry.
Fortinet’s technical background on Rhysida and NTT DATA’s broader ransomware incident analysis provide context, not a game-industry ranking: Fortinet; NTT DATA. Calling the attack “unprecedented” is therefore best understood as emphasis on its remarkable breadth, not a substantiated all-time record.
