Choose a 4K TV and sound system by checking the whole signal path, not by shopping for the biggest HDMI label. For PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X, verify that the exact TV model and input support 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and low-latency gaming; then match the picture and audio to your room. The simplest wiring is console to TV, then the TV’s eARC port to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver. That keeps the console’s video signal out of an unverified audio device.

What should you check before choosing a TV?

Start with a port map for the exact TV model and size you are considering. “4K,” “120Hz” and “HDMI 2.1” on a product page are not enough on their own: the console, cable, selected TV input and any device between them all affect whether the desired signal works. PlayStation documents PS5 support for HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz output, but that is a console capability, not a promise that every game runs at 120 frames per second or that every TV input accepts the signal. See PlayStation’s 4K resolution guidance.

  • 4K/120Hz input: Confirm which HDMI ports accept 4K at 120Hz. If you have more than one console or another high-bandwidth device, count the suitable inputs you will actually need.
  • VRR: Check that the particular input supports variable refresh rate with your console. VRR helps the display respond to uneven frame delivery; it does not force a game to render at a higher frame rate.
  • Low-latency operation: Look for a Game mode and check the TV manual for Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) support. An HDMI 2.1 label does not guarantee ALLM.
  • eARC: Find the port marked eARC and note whether using it leaves enough other suitable inputs for your devices. On many TVs, eARC is a specific HDMI port, not a feature available on every input.
  • Exact variant: Check the model number, screen size and regional version. Features and port layouts can differ between sizes or revisions, even within a product family.

Independent gaming reviews can help clarify motion handling and input lag beyond the marketing specifications. For example, RTINGS describes low input lag for the LG C6, but its public review does not provide an accessible numerical measurement; there is no basis here for quoting a millisecond figure. Check its LG C6 review and PS5 TV roundup for the specific details they publish.

What do 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM actually do?

They address different parts of gaming: resolution and refresh-rate capability, synchronization between console and screen, and display latency. Treat them as separate checks rather than interchangeable features.

4K/120Hz is a supported signal, not a game-by-game guarantee

4K describes image resolution; 120Hz describes how often the display can refresh. A compatible console and TV can use a 4K/120Hz signal when a game and its chosen graphics mode support it. Many games offer different priorities or modes, so a 120Hz-capable display does not make every title render 120 frames each second. PlayStation’s guidance confirms the console’s output capability and points users to display and connection requirements; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate in every game.

VRR smooths changes in frame delivery

Variable refresh rate lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing to better track the console’s output. This can reduce visible tearing or unevenness when frame delivery varies, but it cannot create frames the game does not render. Confirm VRR support for the intended TV input and console rather than relying on a general feature list.

ALLM helps select a low-latency mode

Auto Low Latency Mode can prompt a compatible TV to switch to a low-lag setting when it detects gaming. If ALLM is absent, Game mode may still be selectable manually. PlayStation specifically advises checking the TV manual for ALLM; do not infer its presence from an HDMI version label. Its PS5 display guide also identifies ALLM settings.

How should you match the picture to your room?

After checking ports and gaming functions, choose the screen for the light, seating and kinds of games in the room. Refresh rate alone does not tell you whether a TV will look good in a dark scene, resist window reflections or retain detail from an off-angle seat.

OLED for dark-room contrast and fast motion

OLED can be a strong fit for a dim room and fast-moving games because of its deep blacks and quick pixel response. RTINGS’ review of the 42-, 48-, 55- and 65-inch LG C6 models reports excellent dark-room contrast and gaming motion, while noting direct reflections as a drawback. It also describes cumulative burn-in risk from repeated static elements. That is a risk to consider for games with persistent HUDs, not a claim that OLED burn-in is inevitable. The larger C6H sets are a different variant, so do not assume every C6 review result applies to them.

Bright-room LCD options involve different trade-offs

An LCD may suit a bright, window-heavy room, but “brighter” does not settle the picture-quality decision. Compare blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds, contrast, viewing angles and motion response on the exact model. RTINGS’ roundup describes the Hisense U7SG as more friendly to brighter rooms than OLED alternatives while also noting weaker motion performance than OLED. Its TCL QM6K example has two HDMI 2.1 ports capable of 4K/144Hz, with picture-quality compromises. Those are model-specific observations, not guarantees about every LCD TV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider viewing layout before screen size

Measure the intended wall or stand, account for seating positions, and think about whether viewers sit directly in front of the screen or to the side. Off-axis picture changes and reflections can matter as much as the nominal diagonal. There is no single viewing distance that fits every room and preference, so compare sizes in the context of your actual seating and available space.

Which TV examples illustrate the trade-offs?

These models show why a shortlist should balance ports, room conditions and console-specific formats rather than produce a universal winner. RTINGS’ roundup updated October 20, 2026 includes the Samsung S95H OLED and LG C6 OLED among higher-end options, and the Hisense U7SG and TCL QM6K as lower-price alternatives. Prices and current regional availability are not established here; confirm both with the seller and verify the precise model before buying.

Model Gaming and port details Picture or format consideration
Samsung S95H OLED RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1 ports, VRR, low lag and up to 4K/165Hz PC capacity. Does not support Dolby Vision. The 165Hz PC maximum is not a promise of console output above 120Hz.
LG C6 OLED RTINGS reports four HDMI 2.1-bandwidth ports on reviewed 42- to 65-inch models. Supports Dolby Vision and has strong motion, but direct reflections can be an issue; RTINGS reports no DTS passthrough.
Hisense U7SG Included as a lower-price alternative in RTINGS’ PS5 roundup; check its exact input capabilities for the size and region. More bright-room-friendly than OLED in RTINGS’ comparison, with weaker motion than OLED.
TCL QM6K RTINGS reports two HDMI 2.1 ports capable of 4K/144Hz. RTINGS notes picture-quality compromises. A 144Hz PC-capable input does not mean a console will exceed 120Hz.

These specifications and observations are model-specific and come from RTINGS’ PS5 TV roundup and its LG C6 review. A roundup is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the current regional product listing, exact screen size and TV manual. For Xbox buyers, Dolby Vision gaming can be a deciding factor: RTINGS identifies it on the LG C6, but not the Samsung S95H. The S95H’s lack of Dolby Vision does not mean it cannot handle 4K/120Hz gaming.

How do you choose between a soundbar and an AV receiver?

Choose an eARC soundbar for a compact setup with fewer separate components, or an AV receiver and speakers when you want more control over speaker placement and channel layout. In either case, verify the exact device’s audio support rather than assuming the eARC label guarantees every format or passthrough behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soundbar: simpler installation

Check that the soundbar has HDMI eARC and supports the audio formats you intend to use. If you want a subwoofer or rear speakers, confirm whether the model supports those additions and whether they suit your room and budget. The most straightforward setup is console to a TV input verified for gaming, then the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar. Enable eARC in the TV menu if required.

AV receiver: more speaker-layout control

A receiver and separate speakers can offer a more configurable multichannel layout, but that flexibility comes with more placement and wiring decisions. If the console connects through the receiver, verify that the exact receiver input and output pass the required combination of 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR. If you cannot verify that, connect the console directly to the TV and return audio to the receiver over eARC; then check that the TV passes the audio format you want. eARC capability alone does not establish that a receiver passes every high-refresh video signal.

Understand the eARC boundary

HDMI eARC is designed to return audio from the TV to a compatible sound system, including supported high-bitrate and uncompressed multichannel formats. The format still needs to be supported by the TV’s passthrough and decoded by the audio device. For example, RTINGS reports that the LG C6 does not pass DTS. That limitation is separate from whether the TV can accept a gaming video signal. See the HDMI eARC overview and the TV’s own audio-format documentation before buying around a particular movie or game format.

What is the safest way to connect the console, TV and sound system?

For most buyers, connect the console directly to a TV input verified for the desired gaming features, then connect the TV’s labeled eARC port to the soundbar or receiver. This minimizes uncertainty about video passthrough through audio equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map the ports. Identify which TV inputs support 4K/120Hz and VRR, and which port is eARC. Keep the console on a verified gaming input.
  2. Connect the console to the TV. PlayStation recommends the cable included with PS5. If you need an additional or replacement cable for a 4K/120Hz run, choose a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rather than buying based only on a version number.
  3. Connect audio return. Run HDMI from the TV’s eARC port to the soundbar or receiver’s eARC port. Enable eARC in the TV audio settings if the TV requires it.
  4. Set the console’s audio output. On PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Set the HDMI device type as appropriate; for an AV amplifier, choose the channel count and adjust speaker positions. Select the desired option under Audio Format (Priority) only after confirming the TV and audio device support it. See PlayStation’s audio-output instructions.
  5. Review display settings. On PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output for the available resolution, VRR and ALLM options. Availability depends on what the connected TV reports to the console.
  6. Confirm the real signal. Use a game or system display that offers a 120Hz mode to verify that the console and TV negotiate the intended mode. Check that low-latency gaming is active, VRR is enabled where supported, and the sound system receives the format you selected.

HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Ultra High Speed HDMI cables as supporting up to 48Gbps and says each cable length must be tested and certified. Its HDMI 2.2 overview lists an Ultra96 option with up to 96Gbps, but that is not a requirement for the cited consoles. HDMI 2.2 is the latest specification described by the administrator; it is not a reason to replace a working cable or buy equipment without a matching need. See the Ultra High Speed cable document and HDMI 2.2 overview.

What should you do if 4K/120Hz or audio does not work?

Isolate the connection before changing several settings at once. A problem can come from the selected TV input, a device in the video path, a cable, firmware or an audio format the TV does not pass.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • The console does not offer 4K/120Hz: Check the TV manual for the input’s supported modes, ensure the console is connected to that input, and check for TV firmware updates. If a receiver or soundbar sits between the console and TV, connect the console directly to the TV temporarily to see whether the intermediate device is the limiting link.
  • The TV shows 4K but not 120Hz: Check the game’s display mode and the TV’s input-specific settings; a 120Hz-capable panel does not mean every input or game mode uses 120Hz. Confirm the selected game actually offers a 120Hz mode.
  • VRR or low-latency mode is missing: Verify support on the exact input, check the TV manual for ALLM and confirm the console’s output settings. Do not assume a feature is active because the HDMI port is labeled 2.1.
  • Picture works but audio does not: Confirm that the HDMI cable connects the TV’s eARC port to the audio device’s eARC port, that eARC is enabled if needed, and that the TV passes the selected format.
  • A particular disc or source has no surround audio: Check the TV’s passthrough support and the audio device’s decoding for that format. Generic eARC support does not ensure support for every format; the LG C6’s documented DTS limitation is one example.

PlayStation’s 4K/120Hz troubleshooting guidance recommends checking TV firmware, using the included or an appropriately rated cable, and bypassing intermediary devices when isolating a display problem.

How should you make the final shortlist?

Use a checklist that separates must-have connectivity from picture preference. This avoids paying for a premium screen that cannot connect as planned, or choosing a sound device that complicates a working video path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Must have: The exact TV input supports the console’s desired 4K/120Hz and VRR modes, with low-latency gaming behavior you can verify.
  • Must fit the room: The screen size and viewing angles suit your seating; reflections, brightness and contrast suit the room’s light.
  • Must fit the audio plan: The TV and audio device have the required eARC connection and support the audio formats you care about.
  • Worth comparing: OLED contrast and response versus LCD brightness, reflections, motion and blooming; number of suitable HDMI inputs; and console-specific HDR formats such as Dolby Vision on Xbox.
  • Verify before checkout: Regional model number, screen-size variant, port map, current firmware and current availability.

For a straightforward premium setup, the most dependable starting architecture is console to a verified gaming input on the TV, then TV eARC to the sound system. Buy the TV for the room and the audio system for the listening arrangement, but verify every link in the signal path before committing to a specific feature or format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PS5 output Dolby Atmos?

Sony’s PS5 audio-output guidance includes Dolby Atmos among the available format choices. Whether it reaches your speakers as intended depends on the selected output format and the capabilities of the connected TV and sound system.

Does a TV review for one screen size apply to the whole model range?

Not necessarily. For example, the cited LG C6 review covers 42-, 48-, 55- and 65-inch sets; the larger C6H is a different variant, so its ports and picture behavior should be verified separately.

Can a 165Hz or 144Hz TV make a console run above 120Hz?

A higher PC refresh-rate specification describes a display capability, not a console output guarantee. The cited Samsung S95H and TCL QM6K figures are PC-oriented maximums; the console’s own output and the game’s modes set the practical limit.
