The uncertainty now is not whether the game uses turns, but how its new rules will work—and whether players who prefer different combat styles will like the direction.
Is the new Divinity game turn-based?
Yes. In a December 16, 2025 interview with PC Gamer, Larian CEO and creative director Swen Vincke confirmed that the upcoming Divinity is turn-based. He described its combat as a new ruleset informed by the studio’s previous games, not a return to real-time action.

That confirmation updates the original question in the headline. Players can debate whether they want a turn-based foundation; they do not need to guess which broad combat format Larian has chosen.
Will it play like Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3?
Not necessarily. Larian has said the game draws on ideas and lessons from both earlier Divinity titles and Baldur’s Gate 3, but it has also described the ruleset as new. In a January 2026 AMA, head of design Nick Pechenin said the team created a new action economy and character progression system after reviewing its earlier work and learning from Baldur’s Gate 3’s early-access and post-release development.

Vincke said the aim is a system that is “very easy to learn, very hard to master,” with room for players to combine systems and come up with unexpected strategies. That describes a design goal, not a full explanation of the mechanics. Larian has not disclosed enough detail to establish the exact turn structure, action costs, or how its new systems will compare in play with either earlier game.
Why was there a debate about the combat style?
Divinity is a franchise, not one fixed combat formula. Larian’s game catalog describes Divinity: Original Sin as turn-based and Divine Divinity as a hack-and-slash action RPG, while presenting Divinity: Original Sin 2 as tactical combat. Players can therefore associate the series with different approaches.

After the new game was revealed, coverage recorded questions about whether it might be an action RPG rather than a turn-based one. GamesRadar covered that discussion, but online debate does not establish how the wider player base feels. No representative survey or reliable percentage split is available in the sources cited here.
What does Larian want turn-based combat to feel like?
Larian’s stated goal is not simply to make players wait between turns. In the January AMA, Pechenin said he wants the studio’s games to feel compelling alongside action games when players cast spells, explore, and immerse themselves in the world. He also pointed to interface design, faster AI calculations, and camera interaction with the environment as areas that affect the feel of play.

- The ability to build your own ultimate fighting creature from body parts collected in battle. This creature's power is literally the sum of its body parts, and once created it will follow your commands Golem fashion.
- Sequel to an award-winning Divinity RPG series, that makes use of the same classless system that was incorporated in earlier games, which allows you to choose your own path as you become a Dragon Knight.
- For the first time, an RPG unlocks the power of the Dragon. Climb high and vaporize all that stands in your way as you strategically use both your human and dragon forms to defeat Damian and become the ultimate Dragon Knight.
- Divinity II provides a wide range of moral choices while questing. When you make these choices, the consequences of your actions appear throughout game play, and keep the action exciting and intertwined.
- Use of powerful Battle Towers, vast citadels accessible via the relic known as the Dragon Stone. The Dragon Stone allows you to teleport to the Battle Tower at any moment so that you can utilize the powers within.
Turn-based play offers a different kind of responsiveness: the player can pause, consider a situation, and act at their own pace rather than needing to react continuously. Pechenin described that freedom as a benefit, while also saying the studio wants to make spellcasting and exploration feel satisfying. These are design priorities, not a claim that one combat style is better for everyone.

Larian’s confirmation settles the broad genre question, but not the detailed rules or launch information. The cited sources do not establish the game’s exact turn structure, action costs, party size, release date, or final platforms. The January AMA said the game was in full production and that substantial work remained; that is a dated status update, not a guarantee of its status at a later date. Game Informer reported on December 16, 2025, that no release date had been announced at that time.
