Larian’s new Divinity is set in Rivellon, but the announcement trailer does not reveal where it falls in the series timeline or which familiar characters will return. Larian says the game has a new story and does not require prior experience; players of Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 may spot extra continuity and characters.
What the announcement trailer actually tells us
Larian announced Divinity on 12 December 2025, revealing it with a trailer during The Game Awards. The game is set in Rivellon, the world of the series. Its official tagline—“The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir.”—sets a dark tone, but it is not a plot synopsis. Watch the trailer and see Larian’s official Divinity page.

Larian founder and game director Swen Vincke described the project as the studio’s first game entitled Divinity, despite its long history with the series. He said the team was bringing its previous work together and aiming for a game with greater breadth, depth, and intimacy. That describes Larian’s ambition, not specific story details.
Is this a continuation, and do you need to know the old games?
The confirmed answer is both a fresh entry and a point of continuity. Larian says Divinity will tell a completely new story, while offering some continuity and characters for people who have played earlier games. Prior knowledge is not required; returning players may recognize things that newcomers miss.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
That leaves an important distinction: a connection to earlier games does not establish that the new game is a direct sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2, nor does it identify which events carry forward. As of the December 2025 announcement and FAQ, Larian had not confirmed the new game’s exact place in Rivellon’s chronology, returning characters, or which past events will matter.
Why some fans are revisiting Rivellon lore
Larian’s official forum includes players debating the trailer’s violent tone and asking where the game fits in the timeline. One forum participant wrote, “I’ll be interested to see where in Rivellon’s timeline this game will take place.” These posts show that timeline and lore questions have surfaced in the community; they are anecdotes, not a poll or evidence that most fans are returning to the series.

There is no published statistic in the available sources measuring how many players are revisiting older games or researching the lore after the trailer. The trailer has given viewers reason to speculate, but speculation about its imagery should not be mistaken for confirmed plot information.
What the dark tone means—and what it doesn’t confirm
Larian writing director Adam Smith told PC Gamer on 9 January 2026 that the trailer gives an idea of the world’s darkness. He described a design goal of letting players become a source of hope—or leave the world worse than they found it—and said the team was pushing player agency. That is context for the intended tone and player choice, not confirmation that any particular trailer scene or theory will occur in the game.

- The ability to build your own ultimate fighting creature from body parts collected in battle. This creature's power is literally the sum of its body parts, and once created it will follow your commands Golem fashion.
- Sequel to an award-winning Divinity RPG series, that makes use of the same classless system that was incorporated in earlier games, which allows you to choose your own path as you become a Dragon Knight.
- For the first time, an RPG unlocks the power of the Dragon. Climb high and vaporize all that stands in your way as you strategically use both your human and dragon forms to defeat Damian and become the ultimate Dragon Knight.
- Divinity II provides a wide range of moral choices while questing. When you make these choices, the consequences of your actions appear throughout game play, and keep the action exciting and intertwined.
- Use of powerful Battle Towers, vast citadels accessible via the relic known as the Dragon Stone. The Dragon Stone allows you to teleport to the Battle Tower at any moment so that you can utilize the powers within.
How to catch up, if you want to
You can choose between a quick official orientation and a longer, interactive refresher. Neither is a prerequisite for the new game.
| Option | Best for | What it provides | Commitment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watch the trailer and read Larian’s announcement and FAQ | A quick, reliable orientation | Confirmed setting, the new-story framing, and what Larian says about continuity | Fastest route; no game play required |
| Play Divinity: Original Sin 2 | Hands-on familiarity with Rivellon and a prior series entry | A standalone game that Larian says can be enjoyed on its own; prior players may gain extra context for the new game | Substantially more time than watching the trailer |
Larian describes Original Sin 2 as playable on its own, making it a reasonable optional refresher rather than homework. In a 15 December 2025 post, the studio announced availability on Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; editions and availability can vary by platform and region. Read Larian’s FAQ about the new game and earlier entries.
