A fan-made browser project has put the original Halo: Combat Evolved back in the conversation, but the evidence points to a burst of attention—not a proven, lasting renaissance. The project is separate from Microsoft’s official mod support and from Halo: Campaign Evolved, the 2026 remake of the original campaign.
Why the original Halo is suddenly getting attention
A developer made a build of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved playable in a web browser. PC Gamer reported the developer’s claim that the project saw almost 20,000 games across 115 countries in five hours. That is a striking early burst, but it counts games, not confirmed unique players, and covers only a five-hour window. It does not establish sustained use or a broad resurgence in the original game’s audience. PC Gamer’s report

The browser project’s multiplayer was described as link-based room creation with peer-to-peer hosting, rather than conventional matchmaking. The developer’s reproduced post said “up to 128 players (untested),” so that figure should not be treated as a verified capability. The site also reportedly went down briefly after traffic from X was flagged for suspected phishing, then returned. Its availability and functionality may change; it is an unofficial fan project, not a Microsoft release. PC Gamer’s report
What “no thanks to Microsoft” gets wrong
The browser build is fan-made, and the available reporting does not establish that Microsoft created, endorsed, or was involved in it. But it would also be inaccurate to say Microsoft has done nothing to support the original game’s modding community.

Official mods for The Master Chief Collection
Microsoft’s Halo Support documents Steam Workshop support for Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). The Workshop includes community maps, gameplay tweaks, and custom campaigns. Microsoft’s instructions say to launch MCC with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled when playing mods. Halo Support’s Workshop instructions
Halo: CE mod tools
Microsoft Learn says Halo: CE mod tools are available through Steam regardless of which MCC titles a player owns. Microsoft provides the tools “as-is” and warns that future MCC updates may require maps to be rebuilt. The live MCC Steam Workshop contains campaign and multiplayer entries tagged for Halo 1. That confirms an active catalog of community content, not how many people are playing it or whether the original game has entered a sustained comeback.

These options are related to the original game, but they are not interchangeable: one is a fan-made browser project, one is the existing MCC collection and mod platform, and one is a new remake.

Campaign Evolved is a remake, not the browser project
Microsoft’s official tie-in to the original campaign is Halo: Campaign Evolved, launched July 28, 2026. Xbox Wire describes it as a full remake, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 with new visuals, updated animation, remastered music, re-recorded dialogue, and three bonus prequel missions. It supports two-player local split screen on console and up to four-player online co-op across Xbox, PC, and PS5. In the interview, Halo Studios executive producer Damon Conn said, “We wanted to start where it all began, with the original campaign that defined Halo,” and explained the focus this way: “Focusing on the campaign experience means we can concentrate fully on really capturing the atmosphere, tone – the emotional impact of what made the first campaign so special and iconic.” Xbox Wire interview
The remake’s Collector’s Edition includes a 12-inch Dark Horse Master Chief statue, a light-up Cortana chip, a Steelbook, three concept art prints, a physical reimagined manual, and a console disc. The Steam version includes a code instead of a disc. Xbox Wire edition details
