Is The Outlast Trials worth it for solo players?
It can be, if you want a self-directed stealth-horror campaign and accept two unanswered questions: offline access and Switch 2 performance. Solo trials are an explicit part of the game, and Red Barrels’ earlier release notes describe onboarding and difficulty adjustments for solo and group play. That supports a substantive solo mode rather than a multiplayer-only product.
Playing alone changes the pressure of each trial. You make every route decision, manage objectives without another player creating a distraction and carry responsibility for using tools at the right time. Is it better with friends?
Co-op is the clearest reason to choose the Switch 2 edition. Groups of two, three or four players are supported, so the advertised maximum is four people total, not four additional friends. Team members can divide attention, coordinate movement, recover from mistakes and decide who carries or deploys useful tools.
That shared decision-making is central to the game’s identity. A trial can become a communication exercise: one player watches a route, another works on an objective, and the group decides whether to risk a rescue or retreat. The same pressure can also create friction when players split up, trigger danger or disagree about whether to continue. Voice communication and a group that enjoys retrying after failures are likely to matter more than raw reflexes.
Co-op does not remove the horror. More players can make the experience funnier and more social, but noise, panic and conflicting plans can also make an escape harder. If your group prefers a relaxed party game with little punishment, the stealth-survival structure may feel demanding. If you want a horror game where coordination itself is the challenge, this is the stronger purchase case.
Can Switch 2 players play with friends on PC or PlayStation?
The available launch information supports cross-play, but it does not prove cross-progression. A Switch 2 launch statement from Red Barrels, reproduced by Gematsu from a Nintendúo report, says players can join friends across platforms. The original social post was not directly retrievable, so treat that as the basis for the cross-play claim rather than assuming every platform feature is identical.
Red Barrels’ 2024 instructions explain that players on supported platforms connect through an Outlast ID in the Social Menu. Those instructions also said, at that time, “Cross-Progression is currently not supported.” That statement predates the Switch 2 release. It should not be presented as a definitive 2026 answer, but it is an important warning: cross-play means you can play together; it does not mean your unlocks, currency, settings or trial progress automatically follow you between systems.

Before buying for a mixed-platform group, confirm that everyone is using the current version, has linked the required account or Outlast ID, and understands that shared sessions are different from shared saves. Cross-play availability also does not remove Nintendo’s separate online-membership requirement for online play on Switch 2.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. That cost belongs in the co-op budget alongside the game. A membership requirement for online sessions should not be confused with a claim that every solo activity requires the subscription; the available evidence does not settle the offline-solo or account behavior question for this edition.
If you are buying for a group, check each player’s Nintendo account and subscription status before scheduling a trial. How does the Switch 2 port run?

If performance is your main concern, wait for reports that identify the mode tested (handheld or docked), the game version, measured frame-rate behavior and any differences between solo and busy co-op scenes. Limited-time content can rotate out. Do not purchase solely because a named event is available today unless you have checked its current schedule. The long-term value is better judged by whether you enjoy the repeatable trial structure, customization and progression systems than by one temporary event.
The game also contains material to investigate, so players who like piecing together a setting may find more to do than simply clear objectives. The available evidence does not provide a complete Switch 2 content checklist, a file-size figure or a promise that all platform progression is synchronized.

Wait if you are primarily a solo buyer who requires offline play, or if Switch 2 performance is your deciding factor. Solo trials exist, but the evidence does not confirm offline access. Likewise, there are no measured results to establish how the game behaves in handheld or docked modes. Is a regular microSD card compatible with Switch 2 downloads?
