No documented built-in option lets a Sim put their own baby or child up for adoption in The Sims 4. The game’s documented adoption mechanics work in the other direction: a Sim can adopt a baby, toddler or child into their household. That distinction matters if you are looking for a way to move a child to another household.
What adoption does in The Sims 4
The official The Sims 4 Console Manual describes adoption as adding a baby, toddler or child to a Sim’s household through the Household option on a computer. The manual predates the infant life stage, so EA’s later update is the better reference for infants.
In its March 14, 2023 update, EA described newborns aging up into Infants and also referred to an adoption route. EA’s Growing Together guided tour identifies adopting an infant as a free base-game update feature, rather than an expansion-only feature. These sources describe bringing a child into a household; they do not document a command to place a Sim’s own child with another household.
Can you give a baby or child away?
There is no documented standard in-game interaction for voluntarily giving a Sim’s baby, infant, toddler or child up for adoption. An EA Forums discussion also reports that a normal put-up-for-adoption option is unavailable, but that is community testimony, not definitive documentation of every current game path.

Formal adoption and being a care dependent are not necessarily the same mechanic. An EA Forums discussion about adopting children within a household distinguishes care-dependent status from formal adoption. Replies also raise family-tree eligibility as a possible constraint, but EA’s official guided tour does not spell out exact eligibility conditions. Check the interaction options in your current save rather than assuming care-dependent status is equivalent to adoption.
Why neglect is not an adoption workaround
Do not rely on neglect to transfer a child to another household. EA’s May 5, 2026 Laundry List discusses children being taken for neglect and a fix involving active failing grades before a child is taken on that basis. That describes an automated consequence of neglect—not a player-directed adoption process or a safe way to choose a new home for a child.

- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
What about mods?
Players in the EA Forums discussion about putting kids up for adoption mention mods as a possible workaround. This does not establish which mod currently supports relinquishing a child, whether it works with a particular game version, or how reliable it is. Treat any mod as an unofficial option and check its creator’s current documentation and compatibility notes before installing it.
