The Undertaker career is part of The Sims 4 Life & Death Expansion Pack. Join through Find a Job on a phone or computer, complete four shared ranks, then choose the Funeral Director or Mortician branch when promoted to rank 4. This guide covers each branch’s requirements, tasks and EA-listed daily pay.
How to join and track the career
- Use a phone or computer and select Find a Job.
- Choose Undertaker.
- In Live Mode, open the Career Panel (briefcase icon) to see the Sim’s current schedule, daily task and promotion requirements. Requirements change by rank, so use the panel’s exact task wording as you progress.

Ranks 1–4: shared career progression
All Undertakers begin on the same ladder. The branch decision comes with promotion to rank 5, after reaching rank 4: EA says, “When your Sim is promoted to rank 4, you’ll choose between the Funeral Director or Mortician career path.”

Choose a branch: Funeral Director or Mortician?
The two branches emphasize different skills and tasks. Funeral Director progression leans on Charisma and Gardening, with Thanatology required later. Mortician progression calls for Fitness, Painting, Logic and Thanatology. EA’s guide does not establish that either branch is faster or easier.

EA’s listed top-rank daily figure is §30 higher for Funeral Director. These are in-game daily career figures, not weekly pay or real-world salaries. EA also says Morticians get more career chance cards if they have Thanatology.

Funeral Director ranks and requirements
After selecting Funeral Director, continue to check the Career Panel for the current task and promotion conditions. This branch pairs social work with horticultural tasks and adds Thanatology requirements as the Sim advances.

Mortician ranks and requirements
Mortician progression emphasizes technical and hands-on skills. Thanatology matters both for promotion requirements and, according to EA, for receiving more career chance cards in this branch.

How to complete the named promotion tasks
- Earn Certification: use a computer and select Earn Certification.
- Read Thanatology Theories: on a computer, choose More Choices, then Read Theories on…, and select a theory.
- Other tasks: follow the Career Panel prompt for activities such as Work Out, Plant Something, Have Deep Conversation or Write Obituaries.
Thanatology is a five-level skill in the Life & Death pack and is required to complete the Undertaker career. EA’s Thanatology skill guide describes the skill and its levels.
Which branch should you pick?
- Pick Funeral Director if you want the branch centered on Charisma and Gardening, with obituaries and conversations among its tasks.
- Pick Mortician if you prefer requirements involving Fitness, Painting, Logic and repeated Thanatology theory or certification tasks.
- Choose based on the skills and tasks you want to develop: the official career information does not show that one route is easier or quicker, and their listed top-rank daily pay differs by only §30.
EA’s help pages list these career and skill details but do not provide live-build verification in the material available here. Career values or tasks can change with game updates; the Career Panel in your game is the practical source for your Sim’s current requirements.
