If The Sims 4 will not update, use the EA app rather than Origin, then work through connection, cache, repair, permissions, storage, and operating-system checks in that order. Origin has shut down; EA says the EA app replaced it as the platform for downloading and launching The Sims 4 on both Windows and Mac. On Windows, an Origin error means you need to install or update the EA app, sign in with the same EA account, and open The Sims 4 from Library.
For most stuck downloads, restarting the EA app and computer, clearing App Recovery cache, and choosing Repair on the game tile are the fastest targeted fixes. A download that stops at exactly 4 GB, a Windows folder-permission error, a Mac external-drive installation, an unsupported operating system, and a recurring Update Required message each need a different check.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan The Sims 4 still update through Origin?
No. Origin has shut down, and it is no longer the supported Windows updater for The Sims 4. Install or update the EA app, sign in with the EA account that owns the game, and use the The Sims 4 entry in Library. The EA app is now the main download and launch platform for The Sims 4 on both Windows and macOS.
Move from Origin to the EA app on Windows
- Download and install the current EA app if it is not already installed.
- Sign in with the same EA account used in Origin. Using a different account can make the game or its entitlement appear to be missing.
- Open Library, select The Sims 4, and use its Update control.
If the EA app itself will not install or open, follow the troubleshooting sequence below before attempting a full game reinstall.

Which check should I try first when The Sims 4 will not update?
Match the visible symptom to the narrowest likely cause. This avoids changing permissions when the real problem is a service outage, or reinstalling the game when clearing the launcher cache would have been enough.
| Symptom | Likely issue | Best next action | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update button does nothing or download never starts | Connection problem, service outage, or launcher state | Check EA service status, fully close the EA app, restart the computer, sign in again, and retry | Windows or macOS |
| Percentage is stuck or shows “Waiting for download” | EA app cache or a damaged game installation state | Clear App Recovery cache, then use Repair on The Sims 4 tile | Windows or macOS |
| Download stops at 4 GB | FAT32 file-size limit | Confirm free space and use an install drive with a file system that supports the required file size | Usually Windows; any platform using a FAT32 install volume |
| “Update Required” returns after updating | Stale Sims 4 version record or launcher state | Back up saves, clear cache, repair, then use the community escalation involving GameVersion.txt and offline/online attempts |
Windows or macOS |
| Folder or create-folder error | Windows permissions or another program restricting the EA app | Run the EA app as administrator, verify the Windows SYSTEM account has full control of the game folder, and close background applications | Windows |
| Game is installed on an external Mac drive | Missing Full Disk Access or a non-writable volume | Grant Full Disk Access and verify the drive is writable; macOS cannot write to NTFS without additional support | macOS |
| EA app behaves abnormally on an old computer | Unsupported operating system | Confirm 64-bit Windows 10/11 or macOS 10.15.8 or later | Windows or macOS |
How do I restart the EA app and rule out an outage?
EA download servers or your connection can prevent an update from starting. Restarting only the visible window is not always enough, so close the launcher completely before trying again.

- Exit the EA app completely. On Windows, also check the notification area and close any remaining EA app process; on Mac, quit it from the menu bar or with Command-Q.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the EA app, sign in again, and try Library > The Sims 4 > Update.
If the service is available and the same percentage or waiting message returns, continue with App Recovery rather than repeatedly pressing Update.
How do I clear the EA app cache?
EA specifically recommends cache clearing for stuck percentages and a “Waiting for download” state. It removes temporary launcher data without being the same as uninstalling the game.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open the EA app menu and choose Help.
- Select App Recovery.
- Choose Clear Cache and allow the app to restart.
On Windows 10 and 11, you can also open Start > All Apps > EA > App Recovery, then select Clear Cache if the launcher will not stay open long enough to use its menu.
macOS
- Open the EA app menu and choose Help.
- Open App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache, wait for the restart, and sign in again if prompted.
After the cache reset, return to Library and try the update once. If the game still will not download, repair its files.

How do I repair The Sims 4 in the EA app?
Repair checks the installed game files and replaces damaged or incomplete data before another update attempt. It is the second targeted action after clearing cache.
- Open the EA app and select Library.
- Find The Sims 4 tile and open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the repair to finish; do not interrupt it by shutting down the computer or launching the game.
- Return to the game tile and select Update.
A repair can take time because the launcher must inspect the installation. If the repair itself fails with a folder or access message, use the Windows or Mac checks below instead of looping through repair repeatedly.
What should I check on Windows when the EA app reports a folder or permission error?
Windows can block the launcher even when the game files are intact. These checks apply to errors about creating folders, writing files, or access being denied.
Run the EA app with administrator rights
- Close the EA app.
- Right-click its shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator.
- Sign in and retry the update or repair.
Give the game folder the required SYSTEM access
EA identifies the Windows SYSTEM account as needing full control of the game folder for some installer errors. Open the folder’s security properties, inspect the permissions for SYSTEM, and grant full control if it is missing. Apply the change to the game folder and its contents, then restart the EA app.
Close software competing for resources
Background applications can limit EA app performance or hold game files open. Close unnecessary launchers, file-management windows, overlays, and other programs before starting the update again. If a security product is blocking writes, use its documented, temporary exception procedure rather than disabling protection permanently.
Why does The Sims 4 update stop at exactly 4 GB?
A download that halts at 4 GB can indicate that the installation drive uses FAT32. FAT32 has a maximum individual file size of 4 GB, so a larger update file cannot be written even when the drive appears to have plenty of free capacity.

- Check the drive’s available free space.
- Check the drive’s file-system type in the operating system’s drive properties.
- If it is FAT32, move or reinstall the game on a file system that supports the required file size, following the operating system’s safe migration or formatting procedures.
- Retry the update from the EA app after confirming the destination is writable.
Do not format a drive just to test this theory: formatting can erase its contents. Back up important files first and use a destination whose file system is already suitable whenever possible.
What permissions does The Sims 4 need on a Mac?
macOS may prevent the EA app from reading or writing game data until it has Full Disk Access. An external drive adds a second requirement: the volume itself must permit writing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open Full Disk Access and enable access for the EA app.
- Quit and reopen the EA app, then retry the repair or update.
- If The Sims 4 is on an external drive, check that your account can create and modify files there.
EA notes that macOS cannot write to NTFS without additional support. If the external volume is NTFS and the Mac can only read it, move the installation to a writable volume or provide the appropriate file-system support before updating.
Is my computer’s operating system supported?
The current EA app requirements for The Sims 4 are 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 10.15.8 and later. Unsupported 32-bit Windows editions and older macOS versions can prevent normal launcher operation, regardless of available disk space.
- On Windows, verify both the Windows version and that the installation is 64-bit.
- On Mac, check the macOS version in Apple menu > About This Mac.
- If the system is below the supported baseline, update the operating system when the hardware allows it, or use a supported computer before troubleshooting files further.
How do I stop a recurring “Update Required” message?
If cache clearing and repair do not stop the message, an EA forum troubleshooting reply suggests an additional Sims-specific escalation. It is community guidance, not an EA guarantee, so protect your saves before changing files.
- Back up the folder
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4to another location. - Clear the EA app cache using App Recovery.
- Repair The Sims 4 from its three-dot menu in Library.
- With the EA app closed, delete
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/GameVersion.txt. - Open the EA app and try launching or updating with the app online. If the loop remains, the forum guidance also suggests testing the app offline and then returning online for another update attempt.
Delete only the named version file, not the entire Sims 4 user folder. If the file is recreated and the loop continues, move to launcher reinstallation rather than repeatedly deleting user data.

When should I reinstall the EA app or the game?
Reinstallation is the last resort because it takes longer and creates more opportunities for interrupted downloads. EA documents reinstalling the EA app for persistent installation problems; reinstall the launcher before considering a complete The Sims 4 reinstall.
Reinstall the launcher first
- Back up
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4, including saves and other user-created content. - Uninstall the EA app using your operating system’s normal app-removal process.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the current EA app, sign in with the owning EA account, and check Library for The Sims 4.
- Retry the update before removing the game itself.
Consider a full game reinstall only afterward
Use a full game reinstall only when the launcher remains unable to repair or update the installation after the connection, cache, permissions, file-system, and operating-system checks. Preserve the user folder separately; uninstalling or reinstalling game files should not be treated as a substitute for backing up saves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I choose the next step without making the problem worse?
Use the symptom, platform, launcher, and installation location together. An Origin message points to migration; a stalled percentage points to cache and repair; a 4 GB stop points to the drive’s file system; a folder error points to Windows access; and a Mac external-drive failure points to Full Disk Access or write permission.
- Change one category at a time and retry once after each completed action.
- Keep the EA app online for downloading, except when testing the offline/online escalation for a persistent Update Required loop.
- Do not delete the entire user folder while troubleshooting; back it up first and remove only the specifically identified version file when that escalation is appropriate.
- Reserve reinstalling for failures that remain after targeted checks.
FAQ
Can a USB flash drive fix a Sims 4 update?
No. A USB flash drive can hold a backup of the Sims 4 user folder before you change files or reinstall the launcher, but it does not deliver or repair an EA app update. The update still has to download through the EA app to a supported, writable installation drive.
What exactly should I copy before troubleshooting?
Copy the complete Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 folder to a separate location, then work on the launcher or the single GameVersion.txt file. Keeping the untouched copy lets you restore saves and other user data if a later reinstall or file change goes wrong.
Will clearing App Recovery cache remove my installed worlds and saves?
App Recovery clears temporary EA app data; it is different from uninstalling The Sims 4 or deleting the user folder. Still, maintain a separate backup before any escalation that involves uninstalling software or editing files.

Why does the EA app show the game but not my expansions after migration?
First confirm that you signed in with the same EA account used in Origin. A different account can show a library without the entitlements you previously used, so account verification should precede repair or reinstall attempts.
