The October 27, 2026 update does not require a new The Sims 4 save, and its official notes do not document a change to Elder lifespan, aging speed, age-transition timing, or death rules. It adds free Elder hairstyles, clothing, furniture and styled content, plus separate controls for muscle and weight changes. Existing saves should still be backed up and tested carefully: the patch fixes a white-screen loading problem in certain saves and an endless-loading issue linked to heavy Move Objects use, but some lots may need rebuilding and at least one fix is explicitly non-retroactive.
Use the version information and workflow below to decide whether to continue an existing household, troubleshoot a damaged load, or isolate a mod or custom-content conflict.

The current patch covered by this FAQ is dated October 27, 2026. The build number depends on the platform, so check the number shown by your launcher or console before troubleshooting.

The Sims Team describes the release as containing more than 150 bug fixes, more than 25 fixes for Dine Out, and 14 crash or stability improvements. Those totals describe the scope of the update; they are not a guarantee that every older save state will be repaired.

What did the patch add for Elder Sims?
The Elder portion is primarily free cosmetic and Build Mode content, not a new life-stage simulation. You receive new ways to style Elder Sims and decorate their homes, while the new physique controls let you decide whether muscle and weight changes are allowed.
Free Elder-themed content

- Four new clothing assets.
- Five clothing recolors.
- Vintage Build Mode furniture and decor.
- Four Elder Styled Looks.
- One Styled Room.
- A new Gallery household containing the modeled Sims.
The content is available as part of the update rather than requiring a separate purchase. The Gallery household is useful if you want to see the new looks in a ready-made family, but placing it does not convert or repair an existing household.
Independent muscle and weight controls
You can switch muscle changes and weight changes on or off globally in Game Options. You can also use the relevant self-interactions on an individual Sim. The settings are independent: allowing weight changes does not force muscle changes to remain enabled, and disabling muscle changes does not disable weight changes.
These controls apply to Sims, not pets. They govern whether the corresponding physique can change; they do not alter an Elder’s age duration, aging rate, or death rules.
Does this patch change Elder aging or lifespan?
No Elder-aging change is documented in the official notes for this update. The notes list Elder hair, clothing, furniture, Styled Looks, a Styled Room, a Gallery household, and physique-change controls, but not a longer or shorter Elder lifespan, a different aging speed, a new transition schedule, or revised death rules.
That is narrower than claiming that no player can ever observe an aging difference. A mod, custom content, a damaged save, or an unreported edge case could produce another result. If an Elder ages unexpectedly, record the platform and build number, remove mods and CC, and see whether the behavior repeats in a clean test save. The patch information itself establishes only that no Elder-aging rule change was announced.

Will an existing save still work after the update?
Usually, the correct approach is to keep the existing save, make a backup, and test it. Installing this patch does not by itself create a requirement to start over.
Specific save problems the patch addresses
- Some affected saves that previously stopped at an infinite white screen should now load into their worlds and households.
- Lots that caused endless loading after excessive use of the Move Objects cheat receive a more robust navigation mesh.
EA cautions that a save recovered from the white-screen problem may have lot details that need rebuilding. A successful load therefore means “the save is accessible,” not “every object and relationship is guaranteed to be exactly as before.” Compare important lots with your backup before making major changes.
What the patch does not guarantee
A patch is not a universal repair pass for every historical save state. EA specifically says that the restaurant staff-uniform Create a Sim fix could not be retroactive in old saves. The notes also warn that tables may be deleted from older restaurant builds when footprint changes are involved, particularly in lots built with Move Objects.

What should you back up before installing the patch?
Close the game first, then copy the save and modification folders to a separate, known-good location. EA’s update guidance identifies these Windows-style paths:

On another operating system, the same The Sims 4 user-data folders appear inside that platform’s Documents or user-data location. Preserve the folder structure so the copy can be returned without renaming files.
- Exit The Sims 4 and any mod manager before the update runs.
- Copy the entire
Savesfolder and the entireModsfolder. - Write down the current game version and the mods or CC added most recently.
- Keep more than one backup copy for an especially important legacy, challenge, or build.
- Store at least one copy where automatic synchronization cannot silently overwrite the only known-good version.
Do not treat an automatically managed or cloud-synced copy as your only backup. The purpose of this step is to give you an untouched reference if a lot changes, a mod damages a save, or a later troubleshooting attempt makes the situation worse.

How should you launch the game after updating with mods or CC?
Disablement of mods and custom content after an update is expected. The Sims Team states that “Mods and CC are disabled by design after updates – this is normal.” Use a no-save launch to separate a patch problem from an outdated-file problem.
- Start the updated game with all mods and CC still disabled.
- Open a world and enter Live Mode briefly to confirm that the patched, unmodded game runs.
- Exit without saving. Saving while mods are disabled can strip most modded content from the save.
- After changing your mod set, delete
localthumbcache.package. - Re-enable only mods and CC that their creators have confirmed as compatible with this patch.
- Restart the game and add content back in small batches rather than restoring the entire folder at once.
- Prioritize gameplay and user-interface mods for compatibility checks, because they are especially likely to break after a patch.
An outdated mod can leave changes behind in a save even after the file is removed. EA gives examples including altered lot traits, playmats, and food-related systems, so a save that remains broken after removal is not proof that the patch itself caused the damage.
How do you isolate a broken mod or CC file?
Use the 50/50 method when the unmodded game works but the problem returns after content is restored. It is slower than guessing, but it turns a large folder into a sequence of smaller tests.
- Remove all mods and CC, then confirm the issue is absent in a clean launch.
- Put roughly half of the removed files back and test again.
- If the problem returns, remove half of that suspect group; if it does not, test the other half.
- Repeat until one file or a small conflicting group remains.
- Replace or update the identified file, clear the cache again, and retest before restoring the rest.
A fresh save is a diagnostic comparison, not a replacement for your backed-up household. If the same behavior appears in a new save with no mods, it is more likely to be game-wide; if only the old save fails, the save’s history or embedded mod changes deserve closer attention.
What should you do about a white screen or endless loading?
First determine whether the symptom occurs in a clean game and whether it affects one save, one lot, or every world. The October patch fixes particular white-screen and Move Objects-related loading failures, but a persistent symptom still requires a controlled recovery process.

- If it loads, exit without saving, then identify incompatible content before returning to normal play.
- If it still fails, use the game’s repair option in the launcher and retry the backed-up copy rather than repeatedly opening and saving the damaged version.
Because EA warns that some recovered lots may need rebuilding, inspect high-value builds and compare them with the pre-patch copy before replacing or deleting anything.

Endless loading after placing a lot
The patch improves navigation-mesh handling for lots affected by excessive Move Objects use. If loading still loops, remove mods and CC, test another lot, and try the same action in a fresh save. A failure limited to one lot points toward that lot’s footprint or object history; a failure across clean saves points toward a broader installation or platform issue.
Which changes are retroactive, and which require rebuilding?
Retroactivity matters because a fix can improve future behavior without rewriting every object already stored in a save.

Does the patch change anything else in normal gameplay?
Beyond Elder content and save-related fixes, the update expands Family Recipes to more than 375 pre-existing dishes. That is a broader gameplay change, not a promise that every existing household, refrigerator, or recipe-related mod will be converted without side effects.
The large bug-fix, Dine Out, and stability totals indicate a wide release rather than an Elder-only patch. They should not be read as evidence that every issue in a long-running or heavily modded save has been resolved.

No. Start a new save only when troubleshooting shows that the old save remains damaged, when a specific non-retroactive fix requires a rebuild, or when you want a clean comparison. For a working household, the safer choice is to keep the original, preserve a backup, and test before saving.
When you do create a diagnostic save, leave mods and CC disabled and use it to compare the exact behavior: loading a world, aging a test Elder, placing a restaurant lot, or changing a Sim’s physique settings. This comparison can reveal whether the problem belongs to the installation, the save, or custom content.

What is the safest way to test an Elder household?
Use a duplicate of the save, not your only original. Load the household with mods and CC disabled, verify that the Elder appears correctly, check the global and per-Sim physique settings, and observe the household without committing a save if you are still diagnosing a problem.
If the Elder’s age or death behavior differs from expectation, note the exact platform build and test the same situation in a clean save. The official patch notes provide no new Elder-aging rule to use as an explanation.

Will the October 2026 patch delete my Sims 4 household?
The documented issues concern loading failures and changes to some lot details, not a blanket deletion of households. Keep an untouched copy of the Saves folder and compare any damaged lot or household with that copy before attempting repairs.
Why did my restaurant lose tables after the update?
EA warns that footprint changes can delete some tables from older restaurant builds, especially when Move Objects was used. This is a save-building consequence that may require rebuilding rather than a sign that every restaurant in the game is affected.
Can I turn off weight changes but keep muscle changes?

Include your platform, the exact game version, whether the save contains mods or CC, and whether the behavior occurs in a clean test save. Those details distinguish an unmodified patch behavior from a save-specific or mod-related edge case.
