Is The Sims 5 coming out?

Is Project Rene The Sims 5?
No. EA says Project Rene has evolved to focus on social multiplayer and a mobile-first approach. The company describes it as “not the successor to The Sims 4” and as separate from any future deep, single-player life simulation experience. It is therefore inaccurate to present Rene as a confirmed Sims 5, or to treat its tests and prototypes as proof of features planned for a future single-player game.

When does The Sims 5 come out?
EA has not announced a date or release window for a new single-player Sims game. Because it has not confirmed the title either, claims giving a Sims 5 launch date go beyond what EA has said. Project Rene playtests or other experimental announcements do not establish a release schedule for that separate future experience.

EA also refers broadly to PC, console, and mobile across its Sims portfolio, but does not assign those platforms to an unnamed future single-player title.
Will The Sims 4 still get updates?
Yes. In its January 2026 roadmap, EA said it remains committed to delivering content and updates for The Sims 4. The company also said more than half of its global development team works on The Sims 4 and the next evolution of single-player experiences. EA has not announced an end date for The Sims 4 support.

What EA has said about the future of The Sims
September 2024: a portfolio of experiences
EA framed the franchise’s future as a range of experiences rather than a simple sequence of numbered releases. It said it was testing ideas through Sims Labs and developing Project Rene alongside other projects, including ways for friends to meet and play together. In that update, EA reported more than 1.2 billion hours of The Sims 4 play in 2024 year to date, including more than 759 million hours in Live Mode. It also reported that players had downloaded more than 1 billion Gallery creations since launch and uploaded more than 116 million pieces of content. Those figures describe The Sims 4 activity, not a new game’s development or release prospects. EA’s September 2024 franchise update provides that earlier context.
February 2025: anniversary and franchise history
EA’s 25th-anniversary release described the wider franchise and its history. It was not an announcement of a Sims 5 product. EA’s anniversary release is useful for franchise context, not as confirmation of a successor.

January 2026: Project Rene clarified
EA’s current roadmap set out Rene’s social multiplayer direction, separated it from a future deep single-player experience, reaffirmed continued The Sims 4 support, and said playtesting would continue across multiple products in 2026. This is the latest official roadmap identified as of October 8, 2026.
What is still unknown?
EA has not said whether its next deep single-player experience will officially be called The Sims 5. It has also not announced that game’s launch timing, specific platforms, price or business model, gameplay systems, or whether content from The Sims 4 would transfer. Until EA provides details, those points remain unconfirmed.

EA cautions that Sims Labs and limited-market tests may involve experimental features, concept imagery, naming conventions, and ideas that are still in motion; some may not move forward. A prototype name or test feature should not be read as a final product title or a promise about the eventual game.
