It has not been confirmed. God of War Laufey is a Faye-focused story, and its director says the Leviathan Axe belongs to Kratos because Faye gave it to him. A separate Kratos-led game has been reported, but no cited announcement confirms its weapons. The axe remains Kratos’s; whether it appears in a particular upcoming game is still unknown.
What does the Leviathan Axe’s story establish?
Faye previously owned the Leviathan Axe and gave it to Kratos. In a June 5, 2026 interview with GameSpot, God of War Laufey director Ariel Lawrence said: “The Leviathan Axe really is Kratos’s now—she gave it to him. She’s not taking it back.” That is a statement about the weapon’s ownership and Faye’s story, not a promise about what Kratos will wield in a future game.

Does God of War Laufey bring the axe back?
There is no confirmation that the Leviathan Axe will appear in God of War Laufey. Santa Monica Studio’s June 2, 2026 announcement describes the game as centered on Faye and her life. It identifies her as the axe’s previous owner, but the story detail it gives about her weapon in the adventure is different: Faye earns the trust of Rue, guardian of a sword, and uses that blade during their escape.
That does not rule out every possible appearance of the axe; it means the announcement does not establish one. Faye’s past connection to the weapon should not be mistaken for confirmation that she uses it in this game.

Could the axe appear in another Kratos-led game?
Possibly, but the available reporting does not say. GamesRadar reported on July 25, 2026 that Santa Monica Studio creative head Cory Barlog referred to another Kratos-led God of War game connected to Laufey. The report provides no title, release window, platforms, or weapon details. It is coverage of an informal comment, not a full game announcement, and it does not confirm that the Leviathan Axe will be part of that game.

For Kratos’s established Norse-saga story, God of War Ragnarök is available on PS5 and PS4. PlayStation’s US God of War catalog lists its release date as November 9, 2022. The same catalog lists God of War Laufey for PS5 with a February 16, 2027 release date; check the listing for current availability and details, since release information can change.
