For open-world survival games on Nintendo Switch 2, buy according to the problem you need to solve: the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller for a separate pad and mappable GL/GR buttons, a verified microSD Express card when downloads will exceed available storage, and a Switch 2-specific carrying case for travel. Add the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip only if you want to charge attached controllers or use its extra buttons. An AC adapter, camera, second dock and physical game are situational purchases, not universal requirements.
The recommendations below use Nintendo’s published specifications and compatibility information. They do not claim that one accessory makes Subnautica, No Man’s Sky or Minecraft run faster, and no comfort, battery or performance ranking is presented as an independent test.

Official accessory details are listed in Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessory catalogue. Which Switch 2 accessories help most in open-world survival games?
The most useful purchase depends on whether your bottleneck is control, storage or transport. Open-world survival games can involve long sessions, large downloads, frequent inventory and camera inputs, and travel between handheld and TV play, but those needs do not make every accessory essential.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
1. Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: the separate-controller choice
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is the clearest upgrade for players who prefer a conventional gamepad. Its mappable GL and GR buttons can place a frequently used action under a finger without removing your thumb from an analog stick, and it includes an audio jack and USB-C charging cable. Those are feature advantages; Nintendo does not establish that the controller improves frame rate, loading or survival-game performance.
It is especially sensible for TV play in a base-building session, or for tabletop play when the console is propped up. Nintendo estimates approximately 40 hours of Pro Controller battery life on its European specifications page, with actual duration affected by use. That estimate is for the controller, not the console.
Do not replace an original Switch Pro Controller automatically. Nintendo says the original controller pairs wirelessly with Switch 2, so an existing pad remains a workable option. Choose the new model for its GL/GR mapping, audio connection or a second controller, rather than because the older one has become incompatible.
2. A genuine microSD Express card: the storage solution
Switch 2 is compatible with microSD Express cards, not ordinary microSD cards. Nintendo’s catalogue states: “Please note: Nintendo Switch™ 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” A card merely labeled microSD is therefore not an equivalent expansion purchase.
Nintendo lists a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card for Switch 2, while the console specifications state support for microSD Express capacity up to 2TB. Select a verified Express card and follow the console’s formatting prompt. No universal loading-time improvement or minimum capacity requirement is established by the published specifications.
Storage matters because the listed Switch 2 file size for Subnautica – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is 10.9GB, while No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is listed at 30.3GB. Those are Nintendo’s game-file listings, not measured download times. The console has 256GB internal storage, with some space reserved for system use, so a large digital library can make expansion practical even though every owner does not need a card on day one.

For console-only travel, the Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector bundles a case, protector and cloth. It is the straightforward choice when the console, Joy-Con 2 controllers and a few cards are going with you but the dock is staying at home. Nintendo’s listing does not establish a drop-resistance or scratch-resistance rating, so do not treat the bundle as a certified durability test.

If you move between homes or regularly take the system to a TV, the Nintendo Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case is the better fit. Nintendo says it holds the console, dock, controllers, cables and up to six game cards. That capacity is useful for a complete TV-mode kit but unnecessary bulk for handheld-only trips.
Do I need a microSD Express card for Switch 2?
No. You need one only when internal storage is insufficient, but any expansion card you buy must be microSD Express. An ordinary microSD card cannot substitute for it on Switch 2.
Start by checking the available space in the console’s storage settings and the listed size of the games you intend to install. Subnautica’s Switch 2 listing is 10.9GB and No Man’s Sky’s is 30.3GB; updates and additional games require more room. Nintendo supports Express cards up to 2TB, and its US accessory catalogue lists a 256GB Samsung Express card.

Will my old Switch Pro Controller work on Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. That makes the Switch 2 Pro Controller an optional feature upgrade, not a mandatory replacement.
The new controller’s reasons to buy are its mappable GL/GR buttons, audio jack and included USB-C cable. Keep the original pad if it already meets your needs; select the new one when those controls or a spare controller matter. Nintendo’s European estimate is approximately 40 hours for the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and actual battery life varies with use.
Does the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip charge the controllers?
Yes, the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip charges the attached Joy-Con 2 controllers and adds mappable GL/GR buttons. The grip included with the console does not charge the controllers, and the Charging Grip does not include Joy-Con 2 controllers.

This accessory is useful for handheld players who sometimes move to a more traditional grip without disconnecting the controllers, or for players who want extra button mapping while using Joy-Con 2. It is not necessary if you charge Joy-Con 2 on the console or use another controller. Nintendo estimates approximately 20 hours for Joy-Con 2 battery life on its European specifications page; that is a controller estimate, separate from the console’s approximately 2–6.5-hour range.
Can I play Subnautica with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls?
Yes. Nintendo’s store page for Subnautica – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition explicitly advertises Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. The same page describes an open world built around scavenging, crafting and survival.
That statement applies to Subnautica’s Switch 2 Edition only. It does not establish that every survival game supports mouse controls, so do not assume the feature carries over to No Man’s Sky or Minecraft without a game-specific listing.
Which accessories fit specific survival games?
The games share an open-world survival audience, but their accessory needs are not identical. Use the game’s documented features and file size rather than a genre-wide assumption.
Subnautica – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Subnautica’s listing identifies scavenging, crafting and survival in an open world, supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and lists a 10.9GB file size. A Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is a control preference here, while a microSD Express card becomes relevant if several similarly sized games are installed.
No Man’s Sky – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo describes No Man’s Sky as an exploration and survival game with online play, and lists a 30.3GB Switch 2 file size. That larger listed file makes storage planning more important for a digital library, but it does not prove that a particular card or controller improves online performance.
Minecraft
Nintendo lists a physical Switch 2 edition of Minecraft released October 27, 2026. Eligible digital owners of the Switch version can upgrade to the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition free through the eShop, so check your account before buying another copy. Nintendo also lists a time-limited Ultimate Collection discount for launches from October 27, 2026, at 9 a.m. PT through January 31, 2027, at 9 a.m. PT; verify the current terms before relying on that offer.

Minecraft’s Switch 2 edition supports survival and building. The available information does not establish whether its physical release uses a particular card format, so inspect the packaging rather than assuming it is a game-key card or a complete cartridge.
Do physical Switch 2 games still need downloads?
Sometimes. Nintendo says a game-key card requires an initial download to internal storage or a microSD Express card, and the card must remain inserted to play. Save data is stored in internal storage.
“Physical” therefore does not always mean “no download.” Check the individual game packaging and its Nintendo store page before deciding whether a card is needed, especially when planning storage for a travel library.
Should I buy an extra AC adapter or dock?
Buy the Nintendo Switch 2 AC Adapter when you need a spare, a replacement or a dedicated charger for another room. Nintendo says the official adapter connects to the console or the Switch 2 dock.
An original Switch AC adapter can charge Switch 2 directly, but Nintendo says it cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode. The original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2, so a second dock or a TV setup requires Switch 2-compatible hardware. These are situational purchases rather than survival-game accessories that everyone needs.

Do I need the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera for GameChat?
No, not for voice-only GameChat. The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is for video chat, using a dedicated USB-C camera.
Nintendo notes that some third-party USB cameras may work, but compatibility can vary. The system includes a test in its settings so you can check a camera before relying on it for a group session. Buy the official camera when video is part of your GameChat setup; skip it when voice is enough.

What compatibility traps should I check before buying?
Most avoidable mistakes come from mixing original Switch accessories with Switch 2 hardware or confusing similarly named grips and memory cards.
- Original Joy-Con: Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to or charge on the Switch 2 console.
- Original Joy-Con grips: Original grips are not Joy-Con 2 grips.
- Original dock: The original Switch dock is incompatible with Switch 2.
- Original AC adapter: It can charge Switch 2 directly but cannot run Switch 2 in TV mode.
- Memory cards: Buy microSD Express, not a standard microSD card.
- Charging Grip contents: The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip is sold separately and does not include controllers.
- Camera compatibility: Third-party USB cameras may work, but test them in the system settings because Nintendo says compatibility varies.
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for controllers and power accessories is available in its official support article.
How should I choose accessories for handheld, TV and travel play?
Use this decision path before placing an order:
- Count your play modes. For handheld-only use, prioritize a console case and storage. For TV or tabletop sessions, consider the Pro Controller. For a complete TV setup carried between locations, choose the All-In-One Case.
- Check storage before buying a card. Compare free internal space with the listed sizes of your planned games. Add a microSD Express card only when the library justifies it.
- Decide whether attached-controller charging matters. If you want to keep Joy-Con 2 mounted in a grip while charging, choose the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip; otherwise the included grip is sufficient for gripping, but not charging.
- Audit what you already own. An original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly. An original AC adapter can charge the console directly, while an original dock cannot provide Switch 2 TV mode.
- Separate social features from core play. Add the Camera only for video GameChat. Voice-only GameChat does not require it.
- Check the game edition. Before buying Minecraft again, check whether your eligible digital Switch version qualifies for the free digital Switch 2 Standard Edition upgrade.
How we picked these recommendations
The shortlist uses Nintendo’s documented compatibility, included accessories, stated capacities and game-specific features. The criteria are: solving a concrete need in open-world survival play; avoiding redundant purchases; distinguishing Switch 2 hardware from original Switch hardware; and labeling estimates, regional pages and game-file listings with their source and limits. No pick is described as fastest, most comfortable or longest-lasting because no independent measurement establishes those claims here.
What should you buy first?
Start with a Switch 2-specific case if you travel, a microSD Express card if your installed library needs more room, and the Switch 2 Pro Controller only when its mapped buttons, audio jack or separate-pad format matter to you. Add the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip for charging while gripped. Treat the AC adapter, camera, extra dock and another copy of a game as conditional purchases tied to your setup, not automatic upgrades.
