Alchemy in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a preparation loop: learn a formula, collect its listed ingredients, brew the item in the Alchemy panel, then use the right tool for the situation. Potions and bombs are consumables replenished through meditation when Geralt has hard alcohol; oils are weapon coatings you can apply again after making them; decoctions trade a powerful, long-lasting effect for substantial toxicity.
How to brew an alchemy item
- Learn or find the formula. Geralt begins with some recipes, while others can be found or purchased; the source depends on the formula.
- Collect the ingredients shown for that recipe. Common materials include plants, herbs, and mushrooms; looted enemies can provide monster remains and, in some cases, rare mutagens.
- Open the Alchemy panel and select a known formula. Check the ingredient list before creating it. If a shopkeeper is available, the crafting interface may let you buy a missing ingredient directly.
- Choose the create option to brew the item. The tutorial teaches this loop by having Geralt prepare Thunderbolt before the griffin fight.
You do not need to memorize every ingredient list or gather everything you find. Check recipes in the panel and collect what you need for the preparations you actually plan to use.

What each alchemy item is for
| Item | What it does | When to consider it | Use and renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potions | Temporary or situational effects for Geralt. Thunderbolt is an offensive aid; Cat helps with seeing in darkness. Swallow supports vitality regeneration, while White Honey clears toxicity and lingering potion effects. | When you need a specific combat, healing, or utility effect. Read the item description and account for toxicity. | Consumed when used; meditation replenishes stock when hard alcohol is available. |
| Oils | Weapon coatings aimed at enemy categories. | Check the Bestiary for an enemy’s category, then select a matching oil. | Apply the coating as needed. A community guide says the oil remains available after it is first made and does not need meditation replenishment. |
| Decoctions | Mutagen-based preparations with powerful, long-lasting effects. | When an effect suits your build and encounter, and you can spare toxicity capacity. | Brewing requires mutagens. Their substantial toxicity cost limits how many other potions Geralt can use before vitality suffers. |
| Bombs | Alchemy-made combat items with area effects; they can also help destroy monster nests. | When you need an area effect or are dealing with a nest. | Consumed when used; meditation replenishes stock when hard alcohol is available. |
The guide’s oil distinction is worth understanding: applying an oil is an action, but the coating itself is not a dose that meditation restores. Potions and bombs, by contrast, have stock that can run out.
How to choose potions without overloading toxicity
Pick a potion for a problem you can name: recovery, visibility, or an offensive boost, for example. Check its description and think about what else you have active. Toxicity matters most when combining potions with decoctions, because a decoction can occupy a large share of the capacity available for other potions. White Honey is an option when you want to clear toxicity and lingering potion effects.
#1 Best Overall
There is no universally best potion independent of build, encounter, difficulty, and game version. Treat the item description and your current setup as the decision points rather than following a fixed loadout.
How to match oils to enemies
- Identify the enemy category in the Bestiary.
- Choose the oil that matches that category in the Alchemy or inventory interface.
- Apply it to your weapon before or during the encounter as appropriate.
Oils are most useful when you know what you are about to fight. Exact damage percentages should not be treated as universal: published community advice may not reflect later updates, difficulty settings, or ability modifiers.

When a decoction is worth its toxicity
Decoctions use mutagens and offer powerful, long-lasting effects, but their high toxicity cost can leave less room for other potions. Consider one when its effect supports your active abilities or mutation setup and the upcoming encounter justifies the tradeoff. Mutagens can come from dangerous monsters, so acquiring a particular decoction may require monster-specific loot; the available evidence does not establish a universal duration or best combination.

The in-game tutorial says meditation automatically replenishes potions and bombs when Geralt has hard alcohol. This is a replenishment of consumable stock, not a way to restore oil doses: oils remain available after creation and can be applied again. Decoctions are preparations with a long-lasting effect and toxicity cost; do not treat them as interchangeable with ordinary potion doses.
