To find a missing alchemy ingredient in The Witcher 3, open the Alchemy panel and check the recipe first. Then follow the ingredient’s source: forage plants, loot monsters, or check herbalists and other merchants. For White Gull, gather Arenaria in White Orchard or check Tomira’s stock, then use the recipe to find the remaining components.
How to find the ingredient a recipe needs
Alchemy formulas use a mix of herbs, monster parts, and minerals. Recipes are learned formulas, and you can craft without visiting a specialist craftsman. Since each potion, bomb, and oil can call for different materials, the recipe shown in the Alchemy panel is the dependable way to identify the exact item you lack.

- Open the Alchemy panel and select the potion, bomb, or oil you want to make.
- Check the ingredient list to identify the missing item rather than gathering materials at random.
- Match the item to a source: forage it if it is a plant, loot monsters for monster components, or check a herbalist or other merchant for stock.
- Return to the recipe once you have the required ingredients and craft the item.
Choose the right way to collect it
| Source | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Foraging | Herbs and other plants found in the landscape | Pick useful plants as you travel. A specific route is useful for Arenaria in White Orchard; it is not a universal route for every herb. |
| Monster loot | Monster-specific components and some rare mutagens | Loot defeated monsters, and check particularly dangerous opponents for rare mutagens. The available sources do not establish universal drop rates. |
| Merchants | Ingredients sold by herbalists or other merchants | Herbalists buy and sell alchemy ingredients. Stock can vary, so check the merchant in your current game rather than assuming a fixed inventory. |
These methods complement one another: a merchant may cover a gap in your supplies, but buying is not a universal replacement for gathering or monster looting.

For the base game, the practical Arenaria route is the fields between the sawmill and Woesong Bridge in White Orchard. Arenaria is harder to find outside White Orchard during the main game and is more common in Hearts of Stone, so this is a useful early-game example rather than a complete location guide for every region or expansion.
#1 Best Overall
Tomira, the herbalist near White Orchard’s sawmill, is also listed as a source for Arenaria. Check her current inventory if you need the ingredient, since merchant stock can vary.
How to get White Gull
White Gull is crafted, not harvested as a plant. It uses Arenaria and serves as a high-quality alcohol for alchemy. To make it, select its formula in the Alchemy panel and use that ingredient list to identify the other materials you still need. Check herbalist and other merchant stock for ingredients they sell; a single vendor run is not guaranteed to supply every component.
Rank #2
Once you have crafted a potion, bomb, or oil, suitable strong alcohol in your inventory can replenish crafted mixtures during meditation. That means the goal is often to make the mixture once and keep an appropriate alcohol base available, rather than repeatedly collecting every ingredient for each use.
Make ingredient gathering part of the journey
- Pick useful plants while traveling instead of searching for every herb in one place.
- When a recipe is still missing an ingredient, check herbalists before making a longer trip.
- Loot defeated monsters for components, and inspect dangerous opponents for rare mutagens.
- Use the recipe list for the specific item you want; there is no single ingredient-farming route that covers all alchemy formulas.
