To find armor dye recipes in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you need the Blood and Wine content in Toussaint. Search the documented containers below with Witcher Senses, learn the formula that appears, then craft the dye in the Alchemy menu with one dye solution and four color-specific ingredients. A finished dye bought from a merchant is a shortcut for immediate use; it does not teach the formula, so it cannot replace recipe hunting when you want to craft that color repeatedly.
Do not treat older color-by-location maps as guarantees. The containers are reliable places to look, but the color assigned to a formula can vary among the documented locations. If the first chest gives a different color, keep searching the other sites.

What must you own before searching for dye recipes?
Armor dyeing is a Blood and Wine feature and the formula hunt takes place in Toussaint. CD PROJEKT RED’s current edition information says the Complete Edition includes both story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. If you already own the game on a supported platform, check for the current expansion or edition update before buying anything again; the publisher’s ownership guidance says existing owners can receive the expansion through an update in the applicable edition and platform ecosystem.
Once the expansion content is installed, the recipes, dye solution, dye merchants and Toussaint containers become relevant. A base-game-only installation will not show this system simply because you have reached a high character level or acquired witcher gear.

Every armor dye formula uses exactly one dye solution plus one of each of the four other listed items. The names below follow the remastered item database. Ingredients are in-game alchemy items, not instructions for making real-world dyes.

How do I know a formula was learned?
Looting a formula adds a recipe to the Alchemy section; merely picking up or buying a completed dye adds an item but does not unlock its ingredient combination. Open the Alchemy menu after looting and search the dye entries. If a color is not listed as craftable, treat the item in your inventory as a finished dye or as an unlearned lead, not as proof that the recipe has been acquired.
Where should I search for armor dye formulas in Toussaint?
The following sites are documented formula-container leads. Search the named skeleton, chest, sack, dresser or lockbox, but do not assume the color printed in an older guide is guaranteed there. Formula colors can be drawn from a loot pool, so a site that yields blue on one playthrough may provide another formula on another search.

West and northwest Toussaint
- Bastoy Prison Ruins: Search the skeleton or treasure container within the ruins. The area can contain hostile enemies, so clear a safe route before spending time checking every container.
- Lynx Crag, northwest of Fox Hollow: Inspect the skeleton at the monster-den entrance. This is a lead for a formula container, not a fixed-color drop.
North Toussaint
- Camp beside Chuchote Cave: Look in the camp south of Castel Ravello. Search the camp containers rather than relying on the cave name alone.
- Witch’s hut: The dresser associated with the A Knight’s Tales quest is another documented location. Quest progress can affect whether the hut is accessible.
- Fort Ussar: Check the chest in the small room. Reaching it may require dealing with the fort’s occupants.
Northeast and east Toussaint
- Bridge north of Dun Tynne Crossroads: Search the overturned wagon near the bridge.
- Cave camp east of the crossroads: Inspect the box beside the bed.
- Arthach’s northeast corner: Check the container behind the white tent.
Mont Crane
- Basement alchemy-table area: After dealing with the castle’s enemies and the illusion that blocks access, search behind the illusion near the alchemy table.
- Uppermost level: Search the box on a table beneath the wooden roof.
Mont Crane is not a risk-free shopping stop. If the castle is still occupied or the illusion remains active, the container may be inaccessible until you handle the surrounding encounter and environmental obstacle.
Quest-linked and city locations
- Tufo Vineyard: During the associated contract, inspect the locked cellar. Its quest context matters; do not expect the cellar to be an ordinary open-world chest on every visit.
- Beauclair cemetery: Search the skeleton in the crypt corridor west of Metinna Gate.
How should I search a formula container?
Use a repeatable sweep rather than opening only the most obvious chest. Witcher Senses highlight small containers that are easy to miss, especially in camps, ruins and quest interiors.

- Confirm the expansion area. Travel in Toussaint and make sure Blood and Wine is installed and active.
- Go to one documented lead. Use the geographic groups above to choose a site near your current quest route. Do not travel expecting a named color.
- Activate Witcher Senses. Scan the entire room, camp or ruin. Check skeletons, chests, sacks, dressers and lockboxes, including containers behind furniture or near a wall.
- Open every relevant container. A formula may be in a less conspicuous object rather than the large chest that first catches your eye.
- Check the Alchemy menu immediately. Confirm that a new color formula is listed. If the loot was a finished dye, it will be usable as an item but will not create a recipe entry.
- Move to another documented site if needed. Finding a different color is not evidence that the first location failed. Continue through the route until the formula you want appears.
- Record colors you already know. Keeping a short list prevents repeated trips to the same containers and helps you distinguish a duplicate finished dye from a newly learned formula.
Some locations are dangerous or tied to quests. Save before entering a hostile ruin or a locked quest area if you want a recovery point, and finish the local objective when access is blocked rather than treating the missing container as a bug.
Where do the ingredients and dye solution come from?
Dye solution is the common base for every recipe. Toussaint merchants in several professions can stock it, including alchemists, herbalists, tailors and craftsmen, and it can also appear as regional loot. Check more than one merchant type when you are already in town; no single merchant is established as a universal source of every quantity or every color-related material.

The four remaining ingredients depend on the formula. Some are harvestable plants or mushrooms, such as blueberries, fool’s parsley leaves, honeysuckle and mistletoe. Others are alchemical substances or processed materials, including Nigredo, Rubedo, Vitriol, Aether, Albedo and Rebis. Once the formula is learned, use its ingredient list in the Alchemy menu as your shopping and gathering checklist rather than collecting an arbitrary set of real-world dye supplies.
A practical gathering order
- Learn the formula first. This prevents spending time collecting materials for a color you have not unlocked.
- Buy dye solution while in Toussaint. Check alchemists, herbalists, tailors and craftsmen, then supplement the supply with loot if a merchant’s stock is insufficient.
- Check your existing alchemy inventory. Witcher contracts, exploration and earlier crafting often leave you with some of the required substances already.
- Gather the missing plants and ingredients. Use the exact spellings in the recipe table, particularly Lemmingbrush for orange dye.
- Craft from the Alchemy menu. Each listed color consumes one dye solution and one of each other ingredient, so verify quantities before confirming.
Is buying a finished dye better than crafting one?
Buying is faster; learning a formula is better for repeat use. A finished dye can be applied immediately, while a formula lets you reproduce that color whenever you can supply dye solution and the four listed ingredients.
What colors can the Toussaint dye merchant offer?
Gamer Guides lists gray, turquoise, brown, green, blue, orange, pink and yellow among the merchant’s finished dyes. Other stock descriptions differ, so do not rely on a universal claim that every merchant always carries black, red, purple and white. Inventory can also depend on the particular merchant and game state; check the actual shop screen before planning a color around a purchase.
A finished dye is not a recipe. This distinction explains the common situation in which a player says, “I have dye, but no dyes appear in Alchemy”: the inventory item is ready to use, while the formula still has to be found in a container.

When should I choose each option?
- Choose a finished dye when you need a color for a current outfit and do not want to search multiple containers or gather materials.
- Find and craft the formula when you plan to recolor several pieces, repeat the look after acquiring upgraded gear, or keep a reliable supply for future sets.
- Search before buying when the merchant’s selection does not include the color you need or when you want black, red, purple or white and cannot confirm current stock.
Why do I have a dye but no recipe in Alchemy?
The usual cause is that you possess a finished dye rather than the formula. A merchant sale and a container formula are separate acquisitions, so having one does not unlock the other.
Check these points in order
- Identify the inventory item. If it is a completed color, you can apply it but should not expect an ingredient recipe to appear.
- Reopen the Alchemy menu. Look for the color entry after leaving the container and confirming the loot. A learned formula should show its four additional ingredients and the dye solution requirement.
- Inspect another documented container. The first location may have produced a different formula because color assignments are not dependable by site.
- Confirm the expansion installation. If Toussaint content, dye merchants and formulas are absent, verify that Blood and Wine is installed and that the game is updated for your edition.
- Do not substitute real-world materials. The game checks its own item IDs and spellings; plants, pigments or chemicals outside the game cannot satisfy an alchemy recipe.
There is no dependable published drop probability for a requested color at a particular container, and there is no universal current merchant price established for every finished dye. Plan around multiple search locations instead of resetting one chest while expecting a guaranteed result.
What does armor dye change?
Dye changes the appearance of individual witcher-gear pieces, not their armor values, bonuses or other statistics. Treat it as a cosmetic customization system: select the piece you want to recolor, apply the finished dye, and keep your equipment decisions based on the gear’s actual stats and set effects.
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered update notes dated September 28, 2026 add an important persistence rule: “Dyes from Blood and Wine applied to equipment will carry over to the reforged item.” That statement concerns a dye already applied to gear. It does not say that the formula system, ingredient lists or container-based acquisition method has been replaced.

What should returning and new players know about editions?
Before purchasing anything, check which edition and platform entitlement you already own. The current Complete Edition includes the two story expansions, and CD PROJEKT RED’s ownership information directs existing owners toward the applicable update path. The September 2026 remastered notes also describe a free upgrade for qualifying previous purchases within the same platform ecosystem.
For a new buyer, a physical Complete Edition is available in publisher-confirmed boxed releases for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and a documented Nintendo Switch game card exists. Match the release to your platform and verify the individual retailer listing. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove a dye without replacing the armor piece?
Yes. A separate dye remover restores a dyed piece’s original appearance. It is a different item from both the finished color and the crafting formula, so keep one available if you frequently change a set’s look.
Do I need to find every formula before dyeing one armor set?
No. You can apply any finished dye you already own, and you only need the matching formula and ingredients when you want to craft that particular color. Unlocking the other colors has no prerequisite relationship to the first one you use.
Why does one guide call the orange ingredient Moleyarrow?
That name comes from an older location article. The remastered item database and newer consolidated listings identify the required orange ingredient as Lemmingbrush, which is the spelling to use when checking your in-game inventory.
Can a merchant’s dye stock be used to predict which formula I will find?
No. Merchant inventory and container formula loot are separate systems. A shop carrying a finished color does not establish that the same color will appear at a particular ruin, chest or skeleton.

The September 28, 2026 remastered notes specifically state that dyes from Blood and Wine applied to equipment carry over to the reforged item. The note addresses already dyed equipment, not unlearned formulas or dye items sitting in inventory.
