The usual reason is that the armor is not eligible. The Witcher 3’s tutorial says you can change the color only of items belonging to Witcher gear sets. Ordinary armor and some unique sets are not dyeable, so a missing dye option may be working as intended—not indicating a broken save. If you do have eligible Witcher gear, check that you have a finished dye, that you’re using the Blood and Wine dye system, and that you’re applying it to the armor you actually equip.
Why can’t I dye this armor?
Dyeing is restricted to eligible Witcher gear; it is not a universal recoloring feature for every armor item. The in-game tutorial text, reproduced by Witcher 3 Games Lantern, says: “Remember, you can only change the color of items belonging to witcher gear sets.” If your item is ordinary loot or an unsupported unique set, the game may simply omit the dye option.

That distinction is the first thing to check. A missing option on an ineligible item is not fixed by finding another color, crafting more ingredients, or reloading a save. The available guide identifies Tesham Mutna and Scarlet Crest as examples of unique sets that cannot be dyed; do not assume an item is dyeable just because it looks like armor or belongs to a named set.
What should I check before treating it as a bug?
Work through these checks in order. Each separates a different common cause: unsupported equipment, the wrong item in your inventory, missing expansion content, or a cosmetic layer that is not the equipped armor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the item is eligible Witcher gear. Check the item’s set and category. If it is ordinary armor or an unsupported unique set, there is no normal in-game setting that unlocks dyeing for it.
- Make sure you have a finished dye. A finished color dye is the item used to color armor. Dye solution and the separately documented generic Dye component are crafting materials, not interchangeable color dyes. Dye solution is used to make armor dyes.
- Check whether you have Blood and Wine. Armor dyes, dye solution, and recipes such as Black armor dye are associated with the Blood and Wine content. If you are looking for the dye system in the base game without that expansion, the missing content may explain why it is unavailable.
- Apply the dye to the armor item you equip. In a Reforge or transmog setup, a cosmetic appearance layered over armor is not necessarily the item the dye affects. A third-party guide reports that dyes apply to the equipped armor rather than automatically recoloring the Reforge appearance; treat this as a version-specific edge case, not an official rule for every setup.
- Allow for model-specific color coverage. A valid dye does not guarantee that every surface will look uniformly recolored. CD PROJEKT RED’s REDkit documentation states, “Not all meshes support coloring.” That is a tool-documentation caveat, not a complete specification of the retail dye interface, but it helps explain why trim or other details may retain a different appearance.
How do the common explanations differ?
Use the symptom to identify what to check first. The eligibility rule is the main distinction; the other checks matter once the armor itself qualifies.
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No dye option for one armor item | The item is not eligible Witcher gear, or it is an unsupported unique set. | Check whether it belongs to an eligible Witcher gear set. The tutorial’s rule is limited to Witcher gear. |
| You have dye solution or an item named Dye, but no color to apply | You have a crafting material rather than a finished color dye. | Look for a finished armor dye. Dye solution is used to make dyes; the generic Dye component is documented separately. |
| The dye system or a recipe is unavailable | The dye content is associated with Blood and Wine. | Check that the expansion is installed and available in your game context. |
| The equipped armor changes, but the displayed Reforge appearance does not | The cosmetic appearance and the equipped armor are separate layers. | Check which armor item the dye was applied to. A third-party Reforge guide describes this behavior as version-specific. |
| Some details retain a different color | Not every mesh supports coloring. | Consider the model’s surfaces and details; REDkit documentation gives this general mesh limitation. |
What does Blood and Wine change about dyeing?
Blood and Wine is the expansion associated with the armor dye system, including dye solution and color recipes such as Black armor dye. That explains why a player with only the base-game context may not find the same dye content.

The expansion does not make every armor item dyeable. The eligibility restriction still matters: dye content and dyeable targets are separate questions. First confirm the expansion context, then confirm that the specific item is eligible Witcher gear.
Why does a Reforge or transmog appearance stay the same?
In a Reforge or transmog setup, the visible cosmetic appearance may not be the armor item receiving the dye. The available third-party guide says dye applies to the equipped armor, not automatically to the reforged appearance. Because this is a version-specific guide rather than an official universal statement, use it as a targeted check when the equipped item and displayed look do not match.

In practical terms, identify the actual equipment item first. If that armor is not eligible Witcher gear, dyeing will not work on it; if it is eligible, check whether you are expecting the overlay or cosmetic appearance to change instead of the equipped item.
Why can the result look uneven?
A dye may be valid even if the entire model does not take on one uniform color. CD PROJEKT RED’s REDkit documentation says, “Not all meshes support coloring.” Since that statement concerns REDkit and does not document every retail-game armor model, it supports a limited explanation: some mesh areas or model details may not recolor, but it should not be treated as a definitive map of which retail items or surfaces accept dye.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That makes visual inconsistency different from a missing dye option. If the item accepts a dye but trim, undertones, or other details remain distinct, the mesh limitation is a plausible explanation; the documentation does not establish that every uneven result has this cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is there no in-game fix?
If the armor is ordinary loot or a unique set that is not a supported dye target, the normal dye system has no setting that converts it into eligible Witcher gear. Likewise, having a dye ingredient does not make an unsupported item dyeable. In those cases, the useful fix is to choose an eligible Witcher gear item rather than keep troubleshooting the missing option.

If the item is eligible, the remaining checks are whether you have a finished dye, whether Blood and Wine is available in your game context, and whether the dye is being applied to the armor item rather than a separate cosmetic appearance. A partly recolored model may reflect mesh support rather than a failed application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove dye from Witcher gear?
The available sources establish the eligibility and crafting-material distinctions, but do not establish a dependable removal control or recipe. They therefore do not support a specific menu path for reversing a dye.

Why does the dye button appear for one piece but not another?
Eligibility is checked per item, not just by whether you own a dye. A Witcher gear piece may qualify while ordinary armor or an unsupported unique set does not.
