These 12 tips help you spot dangerous encounters, prepare for monsters and avoid preventable deaths.
Know what you are walking into
1. Check enemy levels and heed the skull
The enemy health bar shows a foe’s name, level and remaining health; a skull marks a major threat, according to the official PC manual. Treat that icon as a warning to disengage or return later, rather than an invitation to test your current build. A Death March survival guide also advises avoiding skull-marked enemies: Gamer Guides’ survival tips.
2. Explore before pushing the main quest
Main-story progression can take Geralt into areas where enemies are far above his level. Xbox Wire recommends exploring before advancing to the next story phase, and side quests can offer a more manageable way to build readiness. If an encounter feels punishing, check nearby contracts, quests and unexplored routes before forcing it.
3. Save before a risky fight
Make a manual save before a monster hunt, a dangerous-looking location or a stretch of exploration where you might stumble into an overleveled enemy. Xbox Wire and Gamer Guides both advise saving frequently. A recent save lets you change your approach without losing a long section of progress.

4. Read the bestiary before a monster hunt
Look up the creature in the bestiary before engaging. Its listed vulnerabilities can guide which Sign, potion and oil to bring; preparation should be tailored to the enemy rather than based on one routine for every fight. Xbox Wire’s beginner tips recommend using the bestiary to plan for monsters.
5. Apply the sword oil that matches the foe
Use an oil suited to the enemy type you expect to face. Oils are a preparation choice, not a universal buff: check the target and your available inventory instead of applying the same one regardless of the encounter. Xbox Wire includes matching sword oil among its monster-hunt preparation advice.

6. Repair gear before major encounters
Check weapon and armor durability before committing to a difficult fight, then repair worn equipment as needed. The PC manual’s interface descriptions include item durability, and Xbox Wire explicitly recommends checking and repairing gear before battle. Do not wait until a long fight is underway to discover your equipment needs attention.
7. Use meditation for maintenance, not health recovery
On Death March, meditation does not restore health. Gamer Guides’ difficulty reference describes this restriction; its table also lists +80% enemy health, +230% enemy damage and 80% experience earned on Death March. Those percentages come from a secondary guide, not the official manual, and should not be treated as official figures guaranteed across every version or edition.

Meditation still has other uses: Xbox Wire’s general advice notes that it can replenish potions when Geralt has strong alcohol. That general behavior does not mean it heals Geralt on Death March. Plan your recovery separately from potion maintenance.
8. Build a healing reserve with food and potions
Keep food available for recovery, particularly early on, and use healing potions when the situation calls for them. Gamer Guides’ Death March advice discusses food, including raw meat, as an early healing resource. Since meditation will not refill your health on this difficulty, avoid entering an extended sequence of fights with no recovery options in reserve.

9. Learn attack patterns before committing to offense
Watch how an enemy telegraphs and delivers attacks, then time your blocks or parries around those patterns. Xbox Wire puts the principle plainly: “Pay attention to enemies’ attack patterns to learn the proper timing for blocks and parries.” A brief pause to read a foe can be safer than trading hits while trying to finish the fight quickly.
10. Use Signs and positioning with purpose
Test which Signs exploit a monster’s vulnerabilities, and reposition to gain an advantage rather than attacking from a poor angle. The bestiary can inform the Sign choice; movement helps you create space, avoid attacks and choose when to re-engage. Xbox Wire recommends both testing Signs and maneuvering for a better position.
11. Watch toxicity when using potions
Potions raise toxicity, and the manual describes the toxicity bar’s skull as a warning of a dangerous level. Check the bar as you use potions instead of drinking every available effect at once. Choose what the current encounter requires, and leave room to respond if the fight changes.
Shape a build around your plan
12. Choose a direction, but do not treat one build as mandatory
An alchemy-focused approach is one viable Death March plan: Gamer Guides recommends using oils and the Protective Coating ability. The game also supports multiple ability trees, so adapt the plan to how you prefer to fight. Pay attention to whether an ability is equipped, not merely unlocked; the guide notes that effects require abilities to be equipped and that matching a mutagen’s color to linked abilities provides a bonus. These are build-planning considerations, not a requirement to copy one exact setup.
