There is no single exact timeline that combines Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, CD PROJEKT RED’s games and Netflix’s adaptations. For a newcomer, the clearest starting point is The Last Wish, followed by the rest of the books in publication-friendly reading order; play the three main games in release order; and watch Netflix’s ancient prequels before its main series only if you specifically want broad in-world event order.
The timelines below keep those continuities separate. That matters because an entry can be set earlier in the story world without being the best place to begin, and the games are set in Sapkowski’s universe without every game event thereby becoming part of the books’ storyline.

What does “chronological order” mean for The Witcher?
It can mean either the order events occur within a story world or the order that makes the most sense for a first-time reader, player or viewer. Those answers are not always the same. The books include collections of stories and standalone adventures; Netflix’s first season interweaves different character timelines; and the games form their own continuation of the Witcher setting.
Use the book, game and Netflix tracks below as separate routes, not as chapters in one master chronology. Within each route, the order is either a recommended starting sequence or a broad placement supported by the publishers and creators—not a claim that every scene has a precisely established date.

| Track | Recommended route | What the order represents |
|---|---|---|
| Books | The Last Wish → Sword of Destiny → five-novel saga | First-reading order, with standalone prequels treated separately |
| Main games | The Witcher → The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings → The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | The original numbered Geralt trilogy |
| Netflix | Blood Origin → Nightmare of the Wolf → seasons 1–4 | Broad event order, not a precise episode-by-episode calendar |
What order should I read The Witcher books?
For a first read, start with the two short-story collections, then read the five novels in saga order. Do not skip straight to Blood of Elves just because some listings call it saga book one: the collections introduce Geralt and key relationships before the novels develop the central saga.
| First-read order | Book | Place in the reading route |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Last Wish | Introductory short-story collection |
| 2 | Sword of Destiny | Second introductory collection |
| 3 | Blood of Elves | First novel in the five-book saga |
| 4 | The Time of Contempt | Second saga novel |
| 5 | Baptism of Fire | Third saga novel |
| 6 | The Tower of Swallows | Fourth saga novel |
| 7 | The Lady of the Lake | Fifth and final saga novel |
Hachette Book Group’s catalogs distinguish the two introductory collections from the five-novel saga. That distinction explains why a seller may label Blood of Elves “book one” while the best entry point for a new reader is still The Last Wish.

Where do the standalone books fit?
Crossroads of Ravens is a young-Geralt prequel, described by its publisher as taking place just after his graduation from Kaer Morhen. In broad event order it belongs before the other Geralt stories, but its later publication makes it an optional addition rather than a prerequisite for the saga. New readers can enjoy it after the core route without disrupting the story.
Season of Storms is another standalone adventure set earlier in Geralt’s life, before he became Ciri’s guardian. It is not a sequel to The Lady of the Lake simply because readers often choose to read it after the five-novel saga. The available publisher description does not establish a precise slot between individual stories in the collections, so placing it at an exact point in a scene-by-scene chronology would overstate what is known.

What is the books’ broad event chronology?
If you want the broadest early-to-late sequence rather than the recommended first read, put Crossroads of Ravens first, then the early Geralt material in The Last Wish, with Season of Storms somewhere in that earlier, pre-Ciri period. Follow with Sword of Destiny and then the five novels in saga order.
- Crossroads of Ravens — young Geralt after his witcher training.
- The Last Wish — early Geralt stories; the collection itself spans multiple stories.
- Season of Storms — a standalone earlier-Geralt adventure, without a firmly established exact position among the individual short stories.
- Sword of Destiny — the second introductory collection.
- Blood of Elves, The Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of Swallows, The Lady of the Lake — the five-novel saga in order.
This is an orientation, not a reconstruction of every story’s date. The collections contain multiple episodes, and the publisher descriptions do not pin every standalone scene to an exact place. For most people, first-reading order is more useful than trying to sort the collections into a rigid timeline.

What order should I play The Witcher games?
Play the original numbered Geralt games in order: The Witcher, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD PROJEKT RED presents these as its original trilogy; keeping them in that order is the straightforward way to follow the games’ own sequence.
| Play order | Game | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Witcher | First game in the original Geralt trilogy |
| 2 | The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings | Second game in the trilogy |
| 3 | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Third game in the trilogy |
Where do the expansions and other games belong?
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are expansions to The Witcher 3, not separate numbered games. They belong with that game rather than between the first and second entries. CD PROJEKT RED’s game materials identify The Witcher 4 as a separate game in development as of October 30, 2026; it is not a released step in the original trilogy’s play order.

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a separate story about Queen Meve amid the threat of Nilfgaard. It offers another perspective on the setting, but it is not “game 1.5,” and the available official material does not establish a precise placement between particular book chapters. Treat it as optional parallel-world exploration rather than a missing installment in Geralt’s trilogy.
What order should I watch Netflix’s Witcher adaptations?
For broad in-world event order, watch The Witcher: Blood Origin, then the animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, then the main series’ seasons 1, 2, 3 and 4. This sequence starts with an ancient prequel, moves to Vesemir’s earlier story and then follows the main show.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Broad event order | Title | Role in Netflix’s adaptations |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Witcher: Blood Origin | Ancient prequel to the main series |
| 2 | The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf | Animated story about Vesemir before the main adult-Geralt story |
| 3 | The Witcher, season 1 | First season of the main series |
| 4 | The Witcher, season 2 | Second season |
| 5 | The Witcher, season 3 | Third season |
| 6 | The Witcher, season 4 |
Why not rearrange season one by episode?
Season one follows Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri across interwoven timelines. The episode sequence is the way the series presents those strands; it is not a simple calendar in which each episode advances all three characters at once. Netflix has not provided a definitive episode-shuffle order that turns the season into one exact chronological track, so watch the season in its released order rather than trying to reorder it by assumed dates.
What is known about seasons four and five?
Netflix’s December 10, 2025 coverage said all eight season-four episodes were streaming. Its catalog listed four seasons as of October 30, 2026. Netflix described season five as intended to be the last season, but the available information does not establish a release date; it should not be presented as an already released fifth season or assigned a premiere day.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Netflix has said seasons four and five cover material from Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake. That is a broad adaptation statement, not a one-book-per-season map. A season can draw on or reorganize material, so the books and show should not be aligned as if each novel corresponds exactly to one season.
How should I treat the other Netflix titles?
The Rats: A Witcher Tale is described as a separate story about six outlaws planning a heist. It does not have a verified exact year in the available Netflix descriptions, so place it beside the main route as an ancillary story rather than giving it a numbered position. A precise chronological slot for Sirens of the Deep is likewise not established here; leave it outside a strict event-order list rather than borrowing an unverified fan timeline.
Are the books, games and Netflix series one shared continuity?
No single combined chronology is established. CD PROJEKT RED says, “The Witcher game is set in the universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski in his series of books.” That describes the games’ relationship to the setting, not a claim that every game event is part of the books’ canon. Netflix, meanwhile, publishes a timeline for events in its own adaptation.
Think of the games as their own stories in Sapkowski’s universe and Netflix’s titles as a separate adaptation track. The shared characters, places and lore make cross-media comparisons natural, but they do not erase differences in continuity or establish a precise date-by-date bridge among all three.

Which order should a newcomer choose?
Choose based on the experience you want, not on the earliest event in the universe. The most reliable routes are:
- To read the books: begin with The Last Wish, continue with Sword of Destiny, then read the five novels. Add Crossroads of Ravens or Season of Storms as standalone adventures if you want more earlier-Geralt stories.
- To play the games: follow the original trilogy in order, then explore the two Wild Hunt expansions or Thronebreaker as optional branches.
- To watch by broad event order: start with Blood Origin, then Nightmare of the Wolf, then the main series by season. If you prefer the main story first, beginning with season one and watching the prequels afterward is also a sensible viewing choice; it simply is not chronological.
- To compare adaptations: keep a separate list for each medium and mark entries as core, standalone, prequel, expansion or ancillary. That prevents a prequel or side story from being mistaken for a required next installment.
The practical distinction is simple: “earliest in the story world” is not the same as “best first.” For the books, the introductory collections provide the intended foundation; for the games, the original trilogy gives the clearest sequence; for Netflix, season one should remain in episode order even though its character timelines do not all move in sync.

When did Crossroads of Ravens come out in the United States?
The US paperback listing gives September 29, 2026 as its on-sale date. The publisher describes it as a young-Geralt story after his training at Kaer Morhen.
