The fastest way to improve in Sea of Thieves is to match your ship to your crew, assign basic jobs before leaving port, and choose a mode that fits your tolerance for player encounters. Start with a Sloop for one or two sailors, a Brigantine for three, or a Galleon for a communicative four-person crew. Use Safer Seas to learn privately at reduced progression, or High Seas for the full shared-world experience. Then give each session a simple purpose—such as a voyage, a story activity, or Trading Company reputation—and keep checking the horizon for both environmental and player threats.
The habits below follow Rare’s official beginner guidance while separating confirmed mechanics from practical crew advice. Sea of Thieves changes regularly, so verify live mode rules and combat effects in the current game before treating any number or item interaction as permanent.

How do I choose the right ship for my crew?
Choose the smallest ship that comfortably fits the people who will actually play and communicate. Rare describes the Sloop as streamlined for one or two sailors, the Brigantine as suited to three, and the Galleon as a good fit for four people who can communicate well. The largest hull is not automatically the best choice: more deck space also means more jobs to coordinate.
| Ship | Crew fit described by Rare | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Sloop | One or two sailors | A compact setup where each player can cover several jobs. |
| Brigantine | Three sailors | Enough people to divide sailing, navigation and response work without filling a four-person roster. |
| Galleon | Four-person crew that communicates well | Works best when players call out decisions and damage instead of acting independently. |
These are crew-size and balance guidelines, not a universal speed, safety or combat ranking. A coordinated small crew can be more effective than a larger group that does not communicate.

What should each crewmate practice?
Rare’s Getting Started guide identifies steering, navigating, setting sails, maintaining battle readiness, repairing and bailing as core responsibilities. Treat those as skills to learn rather than rigid permanent classes. Rotate them during early voyages so everyone understands what the ship needs when plans change.
- Helm: Steer while reporting nearby islands, rocks and ships. The helmsman should not be the only person watching for danger.
- Navigation: Read the map, identify the next destination and keep the crew oriented when visibility or combat interrupts the route.
- Sails: Adjust sail handling for the current course and keep the ship moving while the helm concentrates on positioning.
- Battle readiness: Keep weapons, ammunition and cannon positions ready before a possible encounter rather than after it begins.
- Repairing and bailing: Respond immediately to damage or flooding. A crewmate who knows where the damage is can prevent a small problem from becoming a lost ship.
A useful routine is to say who is steering, who is reading the map and who is handling sails before departure. During an emergency, state the problem and location aloud—“lower deck leak” or “left side flooding”—so the crew can act without arguing over priorities.
Which mode should I use: High Seas or Safer Seas?
Use Safer Seas when you want a private learning space or a story-focused session and can accept slower, capped progression. Use High Seas when the possibility of meeting other crews is part of the experience and you want the normal shared-world progression framework.
| Mode | What it offers | Trade-offs documented by Rare |
|---|---|---|
| High Seas | A shared world where other player ships may be allies or threats. | Greater exposure to encounters with other crews. The official overview does not assign a single risk or reward percentage to every activity. |
| Safer Seas | A private session for solo play or invited friends; Tall Tales and some voyages remain available. | Gold and Reputation accrue at 30% of High Seas rates. Rare’s FAQ also describes level-40 reputation caps for Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance and Hunter’s Call, plus unavailable Emissaries, Captained Ships and Guild progression. Some voyage and treasure types are unavailable. |
The 30% rate and the listed caps and restrictions come from Rare’s Safer Seas FAQ and may change with later updates. Check the current in-game or official FAQ wording if you are planning a long progression push. Safer Seas is therefore a practice environment, not a feature-identical replacement for High Seas.
How should I give a session a clear objective?
Pick one activity before you leave port, then let the crew’s route and risk decisions serve that objective. Rare presents Adventure as the shared-world space for exploration, story-led activities, encounters and Trading Company progression.

Use voyages and Trading Companies for direction
Trading Companies give a new crew a concrete reason to sail. Rare describes these themes:
- Gold Hoarders: Buried treasure.
- Order of Souls: Bounty skulls.
- Merchant Alliance: Cargo and animals.
- Hunter’s Call: Hunting, cooking and fishing.
Choose the theme that matches the time and attention your crew has. A short session benefits from a destination everyone understands; a relaxed session can combine exploration with hunting, cooking or fishing. Selling loot or completing company work raises reputation and rank, and Rare says ranks unlock better voyages and cosmetic items.
Set a stopping rule
Decide in advance whether the goal is one voyage, one story segment or a particular hand-in. This prevents a crew from beginning another activity while tired or distracted. Before ending, make sure everyone knows whether the next action is to continue, return, or change mode; the decision is a crew-management habit rather than a special game mechanic.
What dangers should I expect on a normal voyage?
Adventure can combine environmental threats with ships crewed by other players. Rare’s overview names Skeleton Forts, Skeleton Ship battles, Krakens, Megalodons and player vessels among the possible encounters. You cannot plan every event, but you can make your response deliberate.
Use a three-question horizon check
- What is nearby? Scan the horizon and waterline for sails, unusual movement or an event that could alter your route.
- What is our objective? A crew carrying out a story step may value avoidance, while a crew deliberately seeking encounters may choose to investigate.
- What is the safest response? Decide quickly whether to engage, evade or leave the area, then tell every crewmate what that decision means for steering, sails and repairs.
This does not make every encounter predictable. It keeps the crew from drifting into a fight simply because no one announced a decision.

Keep responsibilities active while traveling
Do not treat sailing between objectives as downtime. The navigator can confirm the route, the helm can maintain awareness of hazards, and another sailor can remain ready to adjust sails or respond to damage. On a larger ship, saying these tasks aloud is often more useful than assuming someone else is handling them.
Which combat items are worth learning first?
Learn specialty items as situational tools rather than as a complete combat doctrine. Rare’s Heart of Fire feature page specifically describes chainshot as capable of disabling a mast, capstan or wheel, and blunderbombs as tools that can damage and knock foes back. Those descriptions explain their intended effects but do not establish a patch-current combat meta.
Chainshot
Use chainshot when disabling an opposing ship’s movement or handling equipment would help your crew create distance or control an encounter. Because the official description is narrow, practice the item in context and confirm its current behavior after updates.
Blunderbombs
Blunderbombs can damage and push enemies away. That makes them a positional tool as well as a damage option: a crew may use the knockback to disrupt an opponent’s position, but the right timing depends on the encounter.

Where can a new player learn the controls and systems?
Start with Rare’s official New Players hub and its linked Pirate Academy instead of relying on an undated third-party walkthrough. The hub collects guides on Emissaries, voyages, seasons, Tall Tales and Safer Seas, while the Academy organizes lessons around Getting Started, Getting Around, First Steps, Crewing Up, and Life and Death.
A practical learning order
- Getting Started: Learn the ship jobs and the basic loop of preparing, sailing and responding to damage.
- Getting Around: Practice moving between destinations and reading the world around your ship.
- First Steps: Use a simple activity to turn controls into a repeatable routine.
- Crewing Up: Learn how to coordinate with friends and communicate responsibilities.
- Life and Death: Review what happens when an encounter goes badly and how to continue learning.
Use the New Players material to understand systems, then return to the game to practice one skill at a time. A returning player should also recheck the Safer Seas, voyage and seasonal guidance because feature availability and progression rules are not frozen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does progression work across Trading Companies?
You can work for any or all Trading Companies without an official penalty for switching between them. Voyages and sold loot raise a company’s reputation and rank; Rare says higher ranks unlock better voyages and cosmetic items.
Rare’s Adventure overview also states that reaching rank 50 in any three Companies earns Pirate Legend status. Because progression systems can change, confirm that threshold in the live game before using it as a current milestone. The useful planning principle remains stable: choose companies whose activities you enjoy, and treat ranks as a way to open more options rather than as a requirement to play only one style.
Is there anything useful to read outside the game?
For players who enjoy the setting, Rare identifies Athena’s Fortune as the official Sea of Thieves novel and says Shores of Gold connects to its lore. The novel was initially released in 2018, according to Rare’s April 13, 2022 article. It is optional background reading, not a gameplay tutorial or a way to improve progression, and current retail availability can vary.

What should returning players verify after an update?
Recheck mode rules, progression thresholds, available voyages, weapon effects and controller bindings whenever you return after a long break. The official beginner material provides a durable foundation, but exact mechanics can be revised in later updates. If an older guide conflicts with the current in-game description or Rare’s latest FAQ, treat the current official wording as the safer reference.
