For a first Titanfall 2 campaign, replay The Pilot’s Gauntlet until wall-running, sliding and double-jumping feel automatic, then choose Regular (Easy if you are new to first-person shooters). Stay in motion, use Cloak to break contact, let your Pilot health regenerate instead of panic-peeking, and change BT-7274’s loadout whenever the battlefield changes. The nine-mission story takes about five hours for an experienced player, but a newcomer learning the movement can need roughly 10 hours; helmet hunting and a later Master run add more time. Nothing important is permanently missable because Mission Select lets you revisit missions and any difficulty counts for Pilot Helmets.
Should I play the Titanfall 2 campaign first?
Yes. The campaign is the safest place to learn Titanfall 2’s unusual combination of first-person shooting, wall-running and Titan combat before multiplayer. Prima Games called completing it “highly recommended” for adjusting to the game’s mobility and combat, while GameSpot described it as a place to learn the basics needed for multiplayer.

Titanfall 2, released on October 28, 2016, is a solo action FPS from Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts. You play Rifleman 3rd Class Jack Cooper. After a disastrous drop on the IMC-controlled planet Typhon, Cooper inherits the Vanguard Titan BT-7274 and must complete Special Operation 217 behind enemy lines. Respawn built more than 100 prototype action blocks before locking the missions; traversal, puzzles, firefights and the relationship between Cooper and BT are deliberately mixed rather than taught in separate tutorial rooms.
The campaign is linear and spoiler-light enough to replay for mechanics. Mission Select, selectable difficulty and collectible tracking mean you can enjoy the story first and return for cleanup instead of stopping every few minutes to search.

What difficulty is best for a first playthrough?
Regular is the best default for a player who has some shooter experience. Choose Easy if first-person aiming is new, if you want to concentrate on movement and story, or if your priority is collecting helmets. Hard suits genre veterans; Master is a demanding replay after you know enemy placements and routes.

You can change difficulty from the main menu after The Pilot’s Gauntlet. Difficulty achievements stack when you finish on Master, so many players separate a fun Regular or Hard story run from a later Master run. GameSpot once suggested the hardest setting as multiplayer preparation; that is a reasonable second-run exercise, not the most helpful first-run choice for a beginner.

How long is the Titanfall 2 campaign?
Allow about five hours for a focused story run according to GameSpot’s 2016 editorial estimate. A Steam community estimate from 2020 puts experienced advanced-movement players at roughly four to five hours and a brand-new FPS player at about 10 hours. Achievement and collectible completion is commonly estimated at seven to 12 hours, while a Master run that also searches for helmets is often described as eight to 10 hours. These are editorial and community estimates, not an official completion time.
There are nine missions. A raw longplay can run a little over three hours because it removes pauses, retries and exploration; it is not a realistic beginner schedule. Replaying the Gauntlet, learning Titan loadouts and checking side paths are the main reasons a new player’s clock is longer.
How do I learn Titanfall 2 movement?
Movement is your primary defense. As GameSpot put it, “Titanfall 2 is all about movement: the faster you are, the harder you are to kill.” Wall-running also makes you a difficult target, so a moving route is usually safer than a perfect headshot from cover.

- Repeat the Gauntlet. In the opening VR simulation, practice jump, wall-run, slide and double-jump before speaking to Captain Lastimosa. Run it again until you can look for the next surface without stopping.
- Scan ahead for vertical surfaces. The Jump Kit enables wall-running, wall-hanging and double-jumping. String walls together instead of landing in the open.
- Slide through landings. Hold crouch before touching down from a jump or wall-run; the slide starts on touchdown and preserves momentum. During a run, crouch to slide, then jump into the next wall-run.
- Use the air gap. A short jump from one wall to the next is faster than lingering on a single wall. Keep routes flowing through rooms, ledges and platforms.
- Turn on Auto-Sprint if desired. It removes a finger chore while you learn routes. The Gauntlet tracks speed continuously; TrueAchievements’ guidance suggests trying to stay above 35 km/h by remaining airborne and wall-running.
Crouching also helps you pass tight gaps and stabilizes shooting. You can fire while wall-running, but do not trade speed for a long aim duel. Grenades slow your movement, so throw them when they clear a threat rather than during a timed traversal.
The Gauntlet’s optional target times are 56.65 seconds for The Student… and 33.65 seconds for a top-three finish in …Becomes the Master. They are useful movement drills, not requirements for the campaign. The first Pilot Helmet is on a floating platform overlooking the finish: wall-run along the left side of the final area.
How should I survive Pilot firefights?
Cooper has no visible health bar. After several moments without taking damage, Pilot health returns to full. Break line of sight, cloak or relocate instead of repeatedly peeking the same angle.
Use Cloak to disengage, not just to attack
Cloak is the campaign tactical ability (LB on Xbox and Q in the EA PC manual). It hides you briefly, but firing a weapon or throwing a grenade ends it immediately. On Hard and Master, cloaking past an unnecessary group is often smarter than clearing every enemy. Starting a Spectre hack while cloaked can also consume the cloak before the hack finishes, so use it only when the risk is worth the distraction.
Prioritize weak points and threats
- Grunts: weak human soldiers; headshots drop them quickly, and a melee finish is efficient when several are close.
- Drones: destroy these early because their fire makes movement routes dangerous.
- Spectres: robots that can be hacked with the Data Knife in the campaign. A hacked Spectre draws fire and can sometimes chain to nearby Spectres, but hacking is slow and risky on Master.
- Stalkers: durable robots that often carry an L-STAR. Headshots are safer than shooting the orange pack on their backs, which can explode and kill you. In The Beacon, shoot the green-lit panel on a charging node with the Arc Tool to turn dormant Stalkers friendly.
- Ticks: spider-like bombs. Keep distance; shooting one triggers its explosion.
- Reapers: rare but dangerous on-foot machines, especially in Into the Abyss. Aim for the waist and head, watch for the Ticks they release, and move away when they explode on death.
Holding melee performs a takedown rather than a quick tap. A cloaked takedown contributes to the Apex Predator achievement. Use grenades against clustered infantry and electric smoke later against Reapers.

How do Titanfall 2 Titan loadouts work in the campaign?
BT-7274 is the campaign Titan; you do not select a permanent multiplayer Titan. New weapons and cores appear as physical loadout pickups during missions. Open the Loadout Database to inspect and equip them—the menu pauses the game, so there is no reason to panic-pick while under fire.
Switch for range and arena shape. Close-range kits and long-range kits are not interchangeable. Dashing avoids incoming fire, defensive abilities buy time, and a Core is strongest when saved for a committed push rather than spent the instant it charges. Titans have a health bar; batteries replenish it, so collect batteries before a major engagement when the route allows.
When you disembark, protect BT. If you leave him exposed and he dies, the game returns you to the checkpoint. In the opening Blood and Rust sewer pickup, a new weapon also brings a new Core. Walk over every kit you see: achievement guides consider BT’s full loadout collection effectively unmissable because missed kits are granted later, but using the right tool immediately makes fights easier.

Bosses are easier when the loadout matches their range and defensive ability. The following recommendations come from Prima Games’ campaign guide; they are not a rule that one kit is best everywhere.

In the first Blood and Rust Titan arena, fire Burst Core just after an enemy shield drops for an easy lesson in timing. If you are pursuing the Close Shave achievement for keeping Lt. Shaver and Lt. Freeborn alive, a lower-difficulty replay is more practical than repeatedly resetting a Master attempt.

Community reports indicate the campaign can be launched in Steam or EA offline mode, but achievements and cloud synchronization pause until you reconnect. What mistakes should new campaign players avoid?
- Standing still to win a firefight: move laterally, wall-run or slide; speed makes you harder to track.
- Using one BT loadout for every room: pause and switch for close, long or shield-heavy encounters.
- Spending Cloak on a single kill: save it to cross a sightline, revive your position or bypass an optional group.
- Leaving BT in danger: mixed Pilot/Titan areas still fail if your Titan dies while you are away.
- Hacking every Spectre on Master: the Data Knife is optional and its animation can get you killed.
- Chasing helmet routes during the first story pass: Mission Select and Easy make cleanup safer later.
- Copying multiplayer Titan advice: the campaign always gives you BT; the decision is which loadout to equip, not which Titan chassis to pick.

Can I change Titanfall 2 difficulty after starting the story?

Lower your mouse or stick sensitivity, take short breaks and practice the Gauntlet in brief sessions. Learn routes with ordinary jumps and slides first; you do not need the optional VR mod or speedrun timings to complete the campaign.
