Your Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream island belongs to the local user profile that created it. Nintendo says each user has a separate save file and island, so another profile on the same Switch cannot open it. For moving an established island between consoles, the safest documented route is Save Data Cloud with Nintendo Switch Online and the same Nintendo Account on the destination console. The Welcome Version (demo) has a different, simpler path: Nintendo says its save data can carry into the full game after you buy it. Mii data is a separate matter and cannot be exported from this game to another Switch, Switch 2, or software such as Miitopia.

Are Tomodachi Life saves shared between profiles?
No. Nintendo’s Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream FAQ says, “No, they are not shared. Save data and islands are created separately for each user registered on the system.” Nintendo also describes the structure as one save file per user. The island is therefore tied to the user profile’s game save, not held as one communal island for everyone on the console.
Launching the game under a second local profile will create or use that profile’s own save context. It is not a supported way to view the first user’s island. The same rule applies if several people own the game on one Switch: each registered user has an independent island and save file.

How does Save Data Cloud protect an island?
Save Data Cloud is Nintendo’s documented online backup and recovery route for supported software. Nintendo says a user can back up supported save data online and download that backup on another console linked to the same Nintendo Account. The game’s product information states that a Nintendo Switch Online membership, sold separately, is required for Save Data Cloud backup.
This is account-linked recovery, not a universal island-sharing feature. The destination console must use the Nintendo Account associated with the backup, and you should select the local user that represents the island’s owner. Nintendo’s general service documentation also limits each Nintendo Account to one backed-up save-data file per software title. That means the cloud service is not a way to maintain several independently backed-up Tomodachi Life islands under one account.

- Identify the exact local user profile that owns the island.
- Confirm that this user is connected to the Nintendo Account you will use on the destination console.
- Make sure Nintendo Switch Online is active if you intend to use Save Data Cloud.
- Allow the backup to complete before resetting, selling, or disposing of the old console.
- Keep the old console available until you have confirmed that the destination can download the expected save.
These checks matter because a game card, a digital redownload, or the same Nintendo Account on a different local profile does not by itself prove that the island will appear. The save belongs to the relevant user-and-software combination.
How do I move an established island to another Switch or Switch 2?
Use Save Data Cloud when you need the clearest, documented cross-console path: back up the original user’s save, then download it on the other console with the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s published guidance establishes the backup and download capability, but the title-specific material does not publish a complete Tomodachi Life menu-by-menu local-transfer procedure.

- On the original console, sign in as the island’s owner. Do not perform the preparation from another household member’s profile; Nintendo’s per-user rule means that profile has a different save.
- Verify Nintendo Switch Online. The game’s product listing says membership is required for Save Data Cloud backup.
- Create or confirm the cloud backup for the title. Use Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud controls for the owning user and software. The exact menu labels can vary with Nintendo system software, so follow the current on-screen instructions rather than an old walkthrough.
- Set up the destination console with the same Nintendo Account. A different account is not the account context Nintendo documents for downloading this backup.
- Open the Save Data Cloud controls on the destination and download the game’s backup. Choose the backup belonging to the island-owning user.
- Launch the game under that same user and check the island. Do this before erasing the original system.
If the island does not appear, stop before deleting anything. Recheck the user profile, Nintendo Account, membership status, and whether the backup was completed on the original console. A second local profile is not a recovery method, and reinstalling the software does not substitute for restoring its save data.
Can a local Nintendo console transfer move the island?
Possibly, as part of Nintendo’s broader system-transfer tools, but the reviewed Tomodachi Life sources do not provide a verified, title-specific sequence. It would be inaccurate to publish a guaranteed “Transfer Your Save Data” path for this game without current Nintendo instructions that name the title and the required conditions.

Local transfer and cloud restore are different mechanisms. A system transfer may move users or data at the console level, while Save Data Cloud is explicitly documented for backing up and downloading supported saves across consoles. If your island is important, make the documented cloud backup first when the account and membership requirements are met. Treat any local-transfer option as an additional system feature, not as proof that the game card or a fresh download contains your island.
Can the Welcome Version demo save transfer to the full game?
Yes. Nintendo’s launch information and the game’s official product page say that, after you purchase the full game, you can pick up where you left off by carrying over save data from the Welcome Version demo.

This is a progression handoff between two editions of the same title. It is not a way to share an island with another local profile, export an island to another game, or move a completed save between unrelated Nintendo Accounts. Buy the full game on the account and console context where the demo progress is available, then follow the game’s or system’s current prompt to use the demo save.
What the demo transfer does not mean
- It does not create a second island inside one user profile; Nintendo describes one save file per user.
- It does not make Mii data portable to Miitopia or another Nintendo title.
- It does not replace a cloud backup when you are changing consoles.
Can I transfer a Mii created in Tomodachi Life?
No, not according to Nintendo’s FAQ. Nintendo states that Mii data created in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream cannot be transferred to a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console or to other software such as Miitopia.
That restriction concerns Mii data, not the game’s save-data backup service. A cloud restore can address the supported game save associated with the correct user and Nintendo Account; it does not turn the game’s characters into exportable system-wide Mii data. Keep “save-data migration,” “demo save carryover,” and “Mii-data transfer” as three separate questions.

What should I do if the old console is unavailable?
First determine whether a Save Data Cloud backup was completed for the island-owning user. If no backup exists and the old console cannot be accessed, the reviewed official material does not establish another Tomodachi Life-specific recovery service.

Do not assume that downloading the game again, inserting the same card, or opening it under another profile will reconstruct the island. Those actions provide the software, not the missing user-specific save.

Nintendo lists Ver. 1.0.4 as the latest update as of October 30, 2026. Released July 22, 2026, it fixed a rare issue in which using Island Builder could corrupt save data and prevent the game from starting in later sessions.

The note describes a specific, rare bug; it does not mean every island is in danger of corruption. Keeping the game updated is sensible before extended Island Builder use and before making a backup, because the update removes the documented failure condition. Nintendo’s update history also records other progression and display fixes, but the Island Builder save-corruption correction is the maintenance item most relevant to protecting access to an island.
What is the safest practical plan?
- Play under the local user that owns the island, and remember that each user has one separate save.
- If you are moving from the demo to the purchased game, use Nintendo’s Welcome Version save-carryover path.
- If you are moving an established island between consoles, maintain Nintendo Switch Online and back up through Save Data Cloud.
- Use the same Nintendo Account and the corresponding island-owning user on the destination console.

For an established island, Save Data Cloud is the clearest Nintendo-documented protection. For demo progress, the full game’s save-carryover feature is the relevant path. Neither mechanism changes Nintendo’s per-user ownership rule or the separate restriction on Mii-data transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nintendo Switch Online back up every Tomodachi Life island on a console?
No. Nintendo describes one save file per local user, and its cloud service allows one backed-up save-data file per software title for each Nintendo Account. A single account therefore should not be treated as a multi-island archive.
Will a digital redownload restore my island automatically?
No automatic restoration is established. Redownloading supplies the game software; the island still depends on the correct user-specific save, recovered through a documented backup or another supported transfer.
