A community-made dinput8.dll patch for Total War: Rome II reports substantially higher frame rates and smoother frame-time lows in CPU-limited scenes. In the author’s CapFrameX run on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D with a GeForce RTX 5090 at 4K, campaign-map average performance rose from 100.5 to 120.5 FPS (+20%), while big-battle 0.1% lows increased from 57.9 to 77.0 FPS (+33%). Those figures come from one high-end system and are not guarantees for every CPU, GPU or game build, but they indicate that the patch targets the main-thread work behind large-battle stutter rather than adding visual effects.
What is the Rome II CPU Performance Fix?
The Rome 2 CPU Performance Fix is a drop-in dinput8.dll created by JGdaCaesar. It intercepts several CPU-heavy routines in the game without replacing saves or ordinary game data. The project description says, “No game files or saves are changed.” Removing the DLL restores the unpatched executable.

The current version 1.2 description supports the normal Steam build and the pantheon beta. It is not a conventional .pack mod, so it does not appear in Rome II’s launcher mod list and requires a separate installation step when installed through Workshop.
How much FPS does the mod add?
JGdaCaesar compared the same save and battle with CapFrameX, V-Sync disabled, at 4K on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and GeForce RTX 5090. The results below are the author’s measurements, not independent multi-system testing.

The low-percentile gains matter most when a battle briefly hitches. A higher 0.1% low means the worst fraction of sampled frames was less severe in that run; it does not mean every battle will maintain 77 FPS. Results can change with processor architecture, background tasks, resolution, mods, unit counts and whether the graphics card is already the limiting component.
Why does it improve large-battle performance?
The patch concentrates on repeated CPU work in the render and streaming paths. Its published technical notes identify four main areas.
Texture-streaming tile scans
When neighboring pixels request the same texture tile, the original routine checks them individually. The replacement counts runs of identical requests, which the project describes as roughly 12–17 times less work for that operation.

Legacy x87 conversions
About 1,200 x87 floating-point-to-integer conversions are replaced with newer instructions. The author says the original conversions consumed about 10% of the campaign-map main thread on the test system.
Render-list sorting
Two draw-list sorting routines are replaced with implementations described as about 11 times faster while preserving the original order. This reduces CPU time spent preparing work for the renderer rather than changing the visual order of objects.
Loading-path changes in version 1.1 and newer
Version 1.1 added cached checks for missing loose files, buffered save reads, use of the Windows file cache for .pack files and optimized string comparisons. On the author’s PC, a Divide et Impera save with 13 Workshop mods loaded in 20 seconds with version 1.1 instead of 38 seconds with version 1.0. A normal mod list’s first load after starting the game fell from 18 to 9 seconds. These are stopwatch results from that one machine, not universal loading-time promises.

Who is most likely to benefit?
CPU-limited systems are the intended audience. The Workshop description says most CPUs at 1080p or 1440p, and slower CPUs at any resolution, should gain at least as much as the author’s test platform. If GPU utilization is already near full, reducing main-thread work may produce a smaller change because the graphics card remains the bottleneck.
- Likely benefit: campaign maps or large battles where one or more CPU cores limit frame delivery.
- Potentially smaller benefit: systems rendering at very high resolution with a fully occupied GPU.
- Required processor feature: SSE4.1, described by the author as roughly 2008-era CPUs or newer.
How do I install the Nexus version?
- Download the Nexus package for the Rome II build you use.
- Copy
dinput8.dllinto the folder besideRome2.exe. - Start the game and open
rome2fix.login the game directory to confirm that the expected build was recognized. - To remove the patch, exit the game and delete
dinput8.dll.
The DLL is intentionally outside the launcher’s normal mod-list workflow. Keep a backup of the file if you switch between game branches or troubleshoot another injector.
How do I install the Workshop version?
- Subscribe to the Workshop item and wait for Steam to download it.
- Open the Workshop content folder for Rome II.
- Run
install.batonce. This places the loader DLL where the game can use it. - Launch Rome II and check
rome2fix.logfor confirmation. - Before unsubscribing, run
uninstall.bat. Unsubscribing alone leaves the mod installed.
Because the Workshop package uses a script and a DLL rather than a launcher entry, an apparently empty in-game mod list does not prove that installation failed.

What compatibility limits should I check?
- Game builds: the current Workshop text lists the standard Steam release and pantheon beta. A future executable change can invalidate a patch until a new build is published.
- Other mods: ordinary
.packand UI mods are reported to work, including a large overhaul list tested by the author. - DLL conflicts: only one
dinput8.dllcan load. Another mod using that filename must be removed or merged before this fix can work. - DXVK: the author reports slower results when DXVK is combined with the fix, so that combination is not recommended.
- Build safety: each patch checks expected game bytes and disables itself on an unknown build. GitHub project documentation describes per-build hashes, reproducible DLL builds and tests comparing replacement routines with the game’s original behavior.
Steam currently shows a community-guideline removal notice on the Workshop page even though its description and subscription data remain visible. That platform status can change, so verify the listing and supported build immediately before installing.

It is a low-risk option for a CPU-limited Rome II installation if your processor supports SSE4.1 and you do not already need another dinput8.dll injector. The reported improvements are largest in frame-time lows, exactly where large battles can feel uneven, while the published averages are around 19–20% on the author’s system. Treat those percentages as a reference point, not a promised upgrade, and remove the DLL if the log reports an unsupported build or another injector stops working.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this Rome II fix work with the Emperor Edition?
The available compatibility text specifically names the normal Steam version and the pantheon beta, rather than every historical executable or edition label. Check the log after launch; the patch is designed to disable itself when its expected bytes do not match.

Can I keep my existing campaign saves after installing it?
Yes. The project states that it does not change game files or saves, and installation is limited to placing the loader DLL beside the executable. Make a normal save backup before major mod changes as a general precaution.
How can I tell whether my PC is CPU-limited in Rome II?
Monitor GPU utilization during the slowdown. If the GPU has headroom while one or more CPU threads are saturated, a CPU-side patch is more likely to help; a graphics-card bottleneck usually leaves less room for this type of improvement.
What should I do if Rome II crashes after adding dinput8.dll?
Remove the DLL, then check whether another injector with the same filename is present and verify that your game branch is supported. For Workshop installs, run the package’s uninstall script rather than only unsubscribing.
