For most players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC, Train Sim World 7 is the better purchase—but start with its Free Starter Edition. The free tier lets you learn the new controls in Training Center. Standard is the sensible paid upgrade for the three new routes; Deluxe adds the three associated locomotives; Ultimate is aimed at newcomers who also want selected Train Sim World 6 content.
Keep Train Sim World 6 if you play on PS4 or Xbox One, already have enough routes, or specifically want a documented boxed PS5 edition. Existing TSW6 owners can claim TSW7’s free base game and carry eligible add-ons to the newer version on the same platform and account.

What changed from Train Sim World 6 to Train Sim World 7?
TSW7 is a new annual entry with new routes and several systems changes, while TSW6 remains the earlier game with its own route library. Dovetail’s release FAQ dates TSW6 to September 30, 2025 and TSW7 to September 15, 2026. The newer game is not a paid graphics mode for TSW6: it is a separate release whose editions package different content tiers.

Freight Hauler
Freight Hauler is TSW7’s major operational addition. At launch it was restricted to the three new TSW7 routes. Locomotives could be spawned in Free Roam, but that does not establish that an older route supports the complete Freight Hauler experience. Treat route compatibility as a per-route question rather than assuming every TSW6 route gained the system.

Beginner Controls and AI Conductors
Beginner Controls provide a simpler driving path for players who do not want to learn every cab control immediately. Dovetail initially describes the mode as available in Timetable and Free Roam. AI Conductors can handle door operation, reducing the amount of manual platform work when the player is focused on driving or dispatching.
Live Weather
Live Weather links conditions to a route’s location and requires a Dovetail Live connection. The publisher says all routes are compatible with the weather option, but that requirement still matters if you play without linking the service. TSW6’s announcements, passenger ambience, random faults and events remain its own additions; they are not new TSW7 features.
Safety systems, lighting and PC rendering
TSW7 adds a default safety-systems toggle, enhanced lighting and additional PC graphics settings. The game remains based on Unreal Engine 4 according to the publisher’s route documentation; it is not an Unreal Engine 5 rebuild. PC options include DirectX 12, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, wider draw distances and an Epic graphics preset.
Dovetail says ordinary minimum and recommended PC requirements did not change. To pursue the Epic preset, its guidance recommends at least an NVIDIA RTX 5070 or AMD RX 9070, while also warning that actual performance varies by route. Those are configuration recommendations, not a guaranteed frame-rate result.

Which routes and locomotives does each version include?
The practical difference between the two games is the content you receive. TSW7 Standard’s value is concentrated in three new routes; Deluxe adds a locomotive for each of those route families. TSW6’s base package has four different routes and its own Deluxe locomotives.
Train Sim World 6 content
- Morristown Line: the New Jersey route included in the TSW6 core package.
- Leipzig–Dresden: German main-line operations.
- Nahverkehr Dresden: the Dresden-area regional setting listed for TSW6.
- Riviera Line: the British route in the TSW6 core selection.
TSW6 Deluxe adds the NJ TRANSIT ALP-45DP, DB BR 294 and CrossCountry Class 220. Those are TSW6 additions; buying TSW7 does not silently turn every TSW6 route or locomotive into a new-game entitlement.
Train Sim World 7 content
- Airedale & Wharfedale Network: one of the three new Standard routes.
- Bahnstrecke Nürnberg–Würzburg: a German route that Dovetail describes as more than 100 km long.
- Florida Tri-Rail: the US commuter route in the Standard package.
TSW7 Deluxe adds the Northern Class 333, DB BR 412 ICE 4 and Tri-Rail GP49H-3. The ICE 4 is therefore a Deluxe-level TSW7 locomotive, not part of Standard. Ultimate includes the Deluxe content and selected TSW6 Deluxe routes and locomotives, but it does not mean every TSW6 Special Edition extra is included.
How do the TSW7 editions differ?
The executable is the same across the Free Starter, Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions. You are paying for included routes and locomotives, not a different physics engine or a separate graphics build.

This table was checked against Dovetail’s published US launch prices in October 2026. Standard-to-Deluxe was a $30 difference at those prices; Deluxe-to-Ultimate was $50. The 10% pre-order discount ended when TSW7 launched, and owning one component of a bundle does not automatically create a bundle discount.
All new TSW7 content can also be purchased separately and used with the Free Starter Edition. If you buy a locomotive on its own, Dovetail recommends owning the associated route for the full intended experience.

Do TSW6 add-ons carry over to TSW7?
Eligible TSW6 add-ons generally carry into TSW7 when both purchases use the same storefront account and platform. The entitlement is not a universal cross-platform transfer: a PlayStation purchase does not become an Xbox or PC entitlement simply because the same person owns both systems.
- Install or claim the TSW7 Free Starter Edition on the platform where the DLC was originally purchased.
- Sign in with the same platform/storefront account used for the eligible add-on.
- Redownload the compatible routes and locomotives from that platform’s library or in-game content manager.
- Check the publisher’s TSW Compatible Content Guide if a particular item does not appear.
Disc-included add-ons can require a product-key support claim rather than an automatic digital entitlement. Keep the disc, packaging and regional code information until the claim is resolved. A TSW7 purchase also does not grant access to an older TSW6 base game; compatibility of an add-on and ownership of the older game are separate questions.

What are the platform and physical-copy differences?
Last-generation consoles
TSW6 supports PS4 and Xbox One as well as current consoles and PC storefronts. TSW7 supports PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic and Xbox PC, but not PS4 or Xbox One. If you are staying on either last-generation console, TSW6 is the compatible choice unless you change hardware.
PS5 discs
Dovetail has documented regional boxed PS5 editions of TSW6. The US, German and UK versions can contain different additional-locomotive codes, so verify the seller, region and code status before buying a used or imported copy. Those documented discs are TSW6 products; they should not be described as boxed TSW7 copies.

For a PS5 collector who requires a physical case, the documented option is TSW6, subject to regional availability and included-code checks. For a player who only wants the newest routes, digital TSW7 is the relevant path.
Is TSW7 worth upgrading from TSW6?
It is worth upgrading when the three new routes, the new operational systems or the current content pipeline matter more than retaining your existing route set. It is not a mandatory upgrade for someone satisfied with TSW6’s routes and features, especially because existing TSW6 add-ons can be used in TSW7 without buying a paid TSW7 edition just to access the newer base game.
Upgrade from TSW6 when:
- You want Airedale & Wharfedale, Nürnberg–Würzburg or Florida Tri-Rail.
- You want Freight Hauler on its launch-supported routes.
- You prefer Beginner Controls or AI-assisted door operation.
- You use a PC capable of exploring TSW7’s optional Epic graphics features.
- You want newly released compatible content going forward, since Dovetail says TSW6 will receive no further updates.
Stay with TSW6 when:
- Your preferred routes are Morristown Line, Leipzig–Dresden, Nahverkehr Dresden or Riviera Line.
- You play on PS4 or Xbox One.
- You specifically want a documented boxed PS5 edition.
- You do not need TSW7’s new systems and would rather avoid buying additional route content.
Which edition should a newcomer buy?
Use the Free Starter Edition first, then match the paid tier to the content you actually want.
- Choose Free Starter if you are unsure about the controls, performance or train-simulation format.
- Choose Standard if the three new routes are the reason you are buying. It is the cleanest entry point at the published $49.99 US launch price.
- Choose Deluxe if the Class 333, ICE 4 and GP49H-3 are important enough to justify the extra $30 over Standard at the published launch prices.
- Choose Ultimate if you are new to the series and also want the selected TSW6 Deluxe routes and locomotives. Its value falls if you already own most of that older content.
Because all TSW7 content is also sold separately, buying Standard first and adding a specific locomotive or route later avoids paying for a bundle whose extras you will not use.
Which edition should an existing TSW6 owner buy?
An existing owner should claim TSW7 Free Starter, migrate eligible add-ons, and then decide whether the three new routes justify Standard. A paid edition is not required merely to run the TSW7 base game or access compatible older purchases.
Deluxe makes sense only when the three named TSW7 locomotives are a priority. Ultimate is mainly for an owner who lacks the selected TSW6 content bundled in that tier; it is poor value when those routes and trains are already in the library and no automatic bundle discount applies.

Is TSW7 better on PC than on console?
PC is the only platform with the optional Epic graphics path, including DirectX 12, DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, wider draw distances and enhanced lighting controls. Those options can make TSW7 more attractive to a suitably equipped PC owner, but Dovetail has not changed the ordinary minimum or recommended requirements and no guaranteed frame-rate gain follows from selecting them.
For the Epic preset, the publisher recommends an NVIDIA RTX 5070 or AMD RX 9070 or better. Route complexity, resolution, upscaling choice and other settings affect the result, so treat that recommendation as a target configuration rather than a performance promise. Console buyers receive TSW7’s gameplay and route changes but do not get the same PC graphics menu.
