It is built into the katana, so you do not need to find or equip a separate Ash of War. Use the skill to enter its sheathed stance, then press a light or strong attack to choose the follow-up.
How to use Transient Moonlight
- Equip Moonveil and activate its skill to enter the sheathed stance.
- While in the stance, press the light-attack input for a horizontal slash and shorter-range light wave, or the strong-attack input for an overhead strike and longer-range wave.
The skill reference lists the stance entry at 0 FP, the light follow-up at 15 FP, and the strong follow-up at 20 FP. These are Elden Ring figures; do not confuse them with costs shown for the similarly named skill in Elden Ring Nightreign.
Light or strong follow-up: which should you use?

Neither follow-up is universally better: choose based on whether the opening favors a quicker, wider attack or the longer-reaching option. The cited descriptions do not establish a current damage ranking for every enemy or build.
Where to get Moonveil
Moonveil is listed as a drop from the Magma Wyrm in Gael Tunnel, Caelid. Once you have the katana, Transient Moonlight is already its skill; you do not need a separate skill item.

What is known about its balance
Bandai Namco’s official Version 1.12 patch notes list “Decreased damage” for Transient Moonlight under skill adjustments. The Version 1.17 update notes report general balance adjustments but do not establish whether Transient Moonlight received a later skill-specific change. These notes support a documented decrease in Version 1.12, not an exact current damage value.
The community-maintained skill reference also describes the stance as slowing movement and reducing stamina regeneration, and says the waves scale with Intelligence and weapon upgrade level. Treat those detailed mechanics as reference information rather than publisher-confirmed build calculations.
