Her strongest setups punish opponents who rush through prepared space; she offers less direct lane and flank surveillance than Cypher or Killjoy, so her value depends on the map and how a team uses her utility.
What Vyse does
Riot introduced Vyse in August 2024 as a Sentinel whose kit is designed to shape how opponents take space. Rather than relying on continuous surveillance, she can make an entry dangerous, split players who cross a trap, and create a short gunplay advantage for her team. Riot described her as an answer to coordinated, Duelist-led pushes in its developer discussion of Vyse.
Her four abilities are Arc Rose, Shear, Razorvine, and Steel Garden. Their effects are strongest when placed with a clear purpose—such as slowing a choke or setting up a punish—rather than deployed simply because an opponent might appear.
Vyse’s abilities and how to use them
Shear: split an entry
Shear places a hidden trap. When an enemy crosses its trigger, an indestructible wall bursts up from the ground behind that player and dissipates after a brief time. This can separate an entry player from teammates following through a narrow route, creating an opportunity for Vyse’s team to isolate the push. It is not an unavoidable trap. Riot’s Patch 11.08 notes say an opponent can bait Shear’s trigger and hear an audio cue upon entering its trigger zone. Treat it as a way to threaten or disrupt a route, not a guarantee that an enemy will be caught unaware.
Arc Rose: a reusable flash
Arc Rose can be placed stealthed on a surface or through one. Reusing it blinds players looking at the rose, and Vyse can pick it up and redeploy it. That makes placement and timing important: a concealed rose can threaten a sightline, but opponents who avoid looking toward it may reduce its impact.

Counterplay is possible once the flash begins its windup. In Patch 11.08, Riot made Arc Rose destructible after that windup starts and reduced its flash duration from 2.25 seconds to 2 seconds. Those figures describe the change in Riot’s patch notes, not a claim about every other aspect of the ability’s behavior.
Razorvine: punish movement through an area
Razorvine launches a hidden nest that Vyse can activate to spread across an area. Players moving through it are slowed and damaged. It rewards patience: placing it where opponents must cross can make a rushed entry costly, while activating it at a useful moment gives the team more chance to capitalize.

Riot’s developer discussion describes pairing Razorvine with Shear at a choke, or launching it into a lane and listening for an audio cue. The intended value is not only damage; the threat can also provide information about whether someone is moving through the area.
Steel Garden: temporarily jam primary weapons
Vyse launches the ultimate’s metal bramble, which jams enemy primary weapons after a brief windup. Riot’s developer discussion explains that affected opponents can still use pistols and abilities. Steel Garden therefore creates a temporary gunplay advantage for Vyse’s team, rather than leaving enemies unable to act.

How to defend against Vyse
- Probe suspected Shear placements. Riot says entering the trigger zone can reveal an audio cue and let an opponent bait the trap. Avoid assuming the wall will catch the first player who crosses.
- React to Arc Rose’s windup. Since it becomes destructible once the flash windup starts, an opponent who spots it may be able to destroy it before the blind takes effect.
- Be deliberate around Razorvine. Moving through it is costly, so consider whether there is another route or whether teammates can help clear the threatened space before committing.
- Keep a fallback for Steel Garden. The ultimate jams primary weapons, but pistols and abilities remain usable; plan for that remaining utility rather than treating the effect as a complete shutdown.
These are counterplay options documented by Riot, not a promise that every trap will be spotted or avoided. Vyse’s team can still benefit when opponents rush, fail to check prepared space, or enter without coordinating their response.

Vyse is most naturally suited to controlling a predictable entry route or tight corridor, where traps and area denial can make a coordinated push difficult. Riot’s agent team lead John “Riot MEMEMEMEME” Goscicki characterized her as an answer to a five-player group pushing onto a site together.

Riot also identified a meaningful trade-off: Vyse has less direct lane watch than Cypher, whose camera and multiple trips can monitor routes, or Killjoy, whose turret and Alarm Bot provide surveillance and warning. Goscicki said larger maps and maps with three plant sites may be more difficult for Vyse, while tighter corridors may better suit her ability to lock players out. This is Riot’s design perspective, not a current map-by-map ranking or a guarantee of competitive performance.
Choose Vyse when the team can make deliberate use of choke control and punish a push. If the primary need is broad, persistent flank coverage across several routes, Riot’s comparison suggests Cypher or Killjoy may better match that specific job.
Release date and latest documented changes
Riot published Patch 9.04 on August 27, 2024, and said Vyse’s rollout across regions would begin on August 28, 2024. The launch kit included Arc Rose, Shear, Razorvine, and Steel Garden.
Patch 13.02, published July 28, 2026, records a fix for a Razorvine bug that could make it indestructible if deployed at the same moment Vyse was suppressed. Riot’s later Patch 13.06 notes, published September 22, 2026, do not mention a Vyse adjustment. These patch records establish those specific notes; they do not establish a win rate, pick rate, or overall competitive ranking.
