If Outlook.com will not reconnect, start by finding out whether the failure follows your Microsoft account or stays on one browser, app, device, or network. Try outlook.com in a second browser or on another device, then run Microsoft’s Account Sign-in Helper for the affected email address or phone number. That sequence separates an account block, service incident, full storage, or missing alias from a local cache, app, or profile problem.
Use the matching fix below for Error 400, repeated password prompts, Hotmail/Outlook loading failures, mobile sync, and desktop Outlook profile errors. The steps also explain when changing a password will not help and when Microsoft support is the only practical route.

What does “reconnecting Outlook.com” actually involve?
Outlook.com is Microsoft’s web mail service; Microsoft states that “Hotmail is now Outlook.com.” Reconnection can fail at several different layers: Microsoft’s account service may reject the credentials, the service may be unavailable, a browser session may be corrupt, a mobile mail app may use an outdated authentication method, or the desktop Outlook profile may need repair.
Those layers produce similar-looking symptoms. A password prompt does not prove that the password is wrong, and a successful sign-in does not prove that the mailbox can send or receive mail. Diagnose the location and scope of the failure before deleting accounts, changing passwords repeatedly, or reinstalling everything.

Where is Outlook.com failing?
Test the same account in another browser and on another device first. If the problem appears everywhere, investigate the account or Microsoft service; if it appears on only one setup, concentrate on that browser, app, profile, or network.
| What you observe | Most likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook.com fails on several devices and networks | Account status or Microsoft service | Run Account Sign-in Helper; check Microsoft’s service-health guidance |
| Only one browser fails | Cookies, cache, extensions, or browser version | Use a private window or second browser, then clear the affected browser session |
| Only Apple iOS Mail keeps asking for credentials | Mail app authentication | Use Outlook for iOS instead of the built-in iOS Mail account |
| Web mail works but desktop Outlook does not | Outlook profile or account configuration | Run the desktop account Repair workflow |
| Sign-in works but messages do not send or arrive | Mailbox or OneDrive storage capacity | Check both Outlook.com mailbox storage and OneDrive storage |
| An address is rejected or an alias is requested | Microsoft account alias configuration | Add the requested first-party Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN alias |
Check the network without changing account settings
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to a trusted Wi-Fi connection, and try again. A network change is a diagnostic, not a permanent fix: if one network works, captive portals, filtering, DNS problems, or an intermittent connection may be preventing the sign-in request from completing.

Check for a Microsoft service incident
When many devices fail simultaneously, consult Microsoft’s service-health information from its sign-in guidance before changing security settings. A service-side incident can make a healthy account look blocked. Treat individual entries on Microsoft’s known-issues page as time-stamped information: the page was updated in 2026, and older incidents may no longer describe the current condition.
How do I use the Microsoft Account Sign-in Helper?
Use the Sign-in Helper before attempting repeated password resets. It asks for the email address or mobile phone number used to sign in, checks the details, and returns an account-specific action.
- Open Microsoft’s Account Sign-in Helper from the official account-support route.
- Enter the affected Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN address, or the mobile number associated with the account.
- Complete any verification the tool requests and follow the result exactly.
- Retry Outlook.com in a clean browser window after completing the recommended account action.
The helper can distinguish an invalid credential from an account that needs verification, is temporarily blocked, is inactive, or has another account-level condition. If it cannot verify ownership, use the recovery information it requests rather than creating a new account immediately; a new account will not restore access to the old mailbox.
How do I fix Outlook sign-in Error 400?
Microsoft describes Error 400 as meaning that a sign-in request containing a password could not be processed. The cause can be repeated attempts, an app or browser defect, a device problem, or the network—not only an incorrect password.

Work through the “Other ways to sign in” path
- On the sign-in screen, select Other ways to sign in when it is offered.
- Choose an available verification method, such as a security code or approved authenticator option.
- After access is restored, update the affected Microsoft app or reinstall it from the device’s official app store.
- Try the sign-in on another device, then repeat it on the original device.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a network-specific request failure.
Do not keep submitting the same password in rapid succession. Repeated attempts can trigger additional protection, making the error persist even after the password is corrected. If every device and network produces Error 400, return to Sign-in Helper rather than cycling through browser settings.
When an app update is the important step
An old Microsoft app can hold an expired session or use a sign-in flow that the service no longer accepts. Updating may preserve the account’s local data; reinstalling removes the local app session and is more disruptive, so use it when updating and a device change have not helped.
What should I do if unusual activity blocked the account?
Microsoft may temporarily restrict an account after detecting unusual sign-in activity. The correct response is verification through Sign-in Helper, not repeated password guesses or attempts from many unfamiliar locations.
- Run Sign-in Helper with the address or phone number for the blocked account.
- Complete the identity checks it presents, using a recovery method you control.
- Once access is restored, review recent sign-in activity and remove any device or app you no longer recognize.
- Sign in again from your normal device and network before adding the account to other mail clients.
If the helper reports that the account is inactive or cannot be recovered, an Outlook.com support specialist or the account-support route is required. Do not provide verification codes to anyone who contacts you outside Microsoft’s official support channels.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan a full Outlook.com or OneDrive storage quota stop reconnection?
Yes. Microsoft says that if either the Outlook.com mailbox or OneDrive storage is full, you cannot send or receive email. Sign-in may still succeed, so a capacity problem can look like a sync or reconnection failure.
Check both storage locations
- Sign in to Outlook.com in a browser that works, even if a mail app is failing.
- Open the account’s storage or quota view and note whether the mailbox is at its limit.
- Open the OneDrive storage view for the same Microsoft account and check that quota separately.
- Delete unwanted large messages and attachments, then empty the Deleted Items and Junk folders.
- Remove unnecessary files from OneDrive and empty its recycle bin if it is contributing to the limit.
- Allow the service time to recalculate the quota, then send a small test message to a trusted address.
Deleting a message without emptying a retention folder may not release space immediately. If the quota remains full after cleanup, review any paid or organization-provided storage entitlement through the account’s billing or administrator support rather than repeatedly reinstalling Outlook.

Why is Outlook asking me to add an Outlook or Hotmail alias?
A Microsoft account created only with a third-party email address or a phone number may need a first-party alias before Outlook.com can operate normally. Microsoft labels this requirement “by design”; it is an account-identity rule, not evidence that the third-party address is invalid.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account management page using the existing address or phone number.
- Open the account information or alias-management area.
- Choose the option to add an alias and select an available Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, or MSN address when prompted.
- Verify the new alias if Microsoft requests confirmation.
- Use the new first-party alias to open Outlook.com, while retaining the original address as a sign-in method if the account permits it.
An alias is not automatically a separate Microsoft account. Be careful when choosing which address is the primary sending identity, because changing primary-alias settings can affect how recipients see your outgoing mail and how you sign in on existing devices.
How do I repair a browser that will not load or accept my Outlook address?
Reset the browser session before changing account credentials. Corrupt cookies, stale cached scripts, extensions that block sign-in elements, and an outdated Safari release can stop Outlook.com from loading or accepting an address.
Use a clean session as a quick test
- Open a private or InPrivate window in the same browser.
- Go directly to Outlook.com and attempt one sign-in.
- If the private window works, the account is probably healthy and the normal profile needs cleanup.
- Sign out of Outlook.com, close every browser tab and window, then reopen the browser.
- Clear cookies and cached data for Microsoft account and Outlook.com sites, and sign in again.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, pop-up blockers, script filters, and privacy extensions, testing after each change.
Extensions can interfere with redirects, verification dialogs, or the address field itself. Re-enable them one at a time after the sign-in works so you can identify the conflicting extension instead of leaving all protections disabled.
What Safari users should check
Microsoft documents a Safari workaround for address-entry problems: update to Safari 16 or newer. On Apple devices that cannot run that release, use a supported alternative browser or the Outlook mobile app while arranging an operating-system update.
When the browser is not the cause
If Outlook.com fails in a private window, a second browser, and another device, stop clearing local data. A consistent cross-device failure points to account status or a Microsoft service condition, so run Sign-in Helper and check service health.

How do I stop Apple iOS Mail from repeatedly requesting my Outlook password?
If Apple’s built-in iOS Mail repeatedly asks for the Microsoft username and password, Microsoft documents switching to Outlook for iOS as the workaround. The repeated prompt is often an authentication-compatibility problem in the mail client, not proof that the password is wrong.
- Install Outlook for iOS from Apple’s official App Store.
- Open it and choose Add account.
- Enter the Outlook.com address and complete Microsoft’s current verification flow.
- Approve notifications and background refresh if you want timely new-mail alerts.
- After confirming mail arrives in Outlook for iOS, remove the repeatedly failing Outlook account from iOS Mail to stop its prompts.
Removing the iOS Mail account does not delete messages stored in Outlook.com. It removes that device’s local account configuration; messages remain available through Outlook.com and other correctly configured clients.
How do I repair Outlook on a Windows desktop?
When Outlook.com works in a browser but desktop Outlook will not reconnect, use the account’s built-in Repair workflow. Repair updates the profile’s connection settings without requiring you to recreate the entire Windows mail profile.
- Open Outlook.
- Choose File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- On the Email tab, select the affected account.
- Choose Repair and complete the wizard, entering verification details if requested.
- Restart Outlook and allow the mailbox to synchronize before testing send and receive.
Microsoft notes that Repair is unavailable for Outlook 2016 connecting to Exchange. In that case, follow the organization’s Exchange or Microsoft 365 administrator procedure rather than trying to force the consumer Outlook.com repair path.

Prepare useful details for support
- The exact address or phone-number sign-in method, without sharing your password or security codes.
- The complete error text, including Error 400 if shown.
- Whether the failure occurs in a second browser, another device, and a different network.
- Whether Sign-in Helper reports a block, verification requirement, inactive account, or no issue.
- Whether Outlook.com and OneDrive storage are full.
- The browser name and version, iOS version and mail app, or desktop Outlook edition.
- The approximate time the problem began and whether Microsoft’s service-health page showed an incident.
These details keep support from repeating local cache steps when the account is blocked, and they help identify a client-specific configuration when the account is healthy.
Which fix should I try first?
Use this decision path in order, stopping when the symptom is resolved.
- Scope: Try Outlook.com in a second browser or device. Check a different network if practical.
- Account: Run Account Sign-in Helper with the affected address or mobile number.
- Error 400: Select Other ways to sign in, update or reinstall the Microsoft app, change device and network, and avoid rapid repeated attempts.
- Security: Complete any unusual-activity verification through Sign-in Helper.
- Capacity: Check both Outlook.com mailbox and OneDrive quotas; clean retained folders and recycle bins.
- Alias: Add the requested Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN alias if the account was created only with a third-party address or phone number.
- Browser: Sign out, close all windows, clear cookies and cache, disable interfering extensions, and update Safari to version 16 or newer.
- Mobile: Replace a repeatedly prompting iOS Mail setup with Outlook for iOS.
- Desktop: Run File > Account Settings > Account Settings > Email > Repair in desktop Outlook, unless the Outlook 2016/Exchange limitation applies.
- Support: Contact Microsoft through Outlook.com Help, Account & Billing Help, the Outlook.com Community, or the account-support route.
This order prevents a local browser reset from distracting you from an account block, while also avoiding unnecessary account changes when only one device is affected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will changing my Microsoft password fix an Outlook.com reconnect problem?
Only if the password is actually invalid or has been reset. A full mailbox, OneDrive quota, browser cookie problem, missing first-party alias, service incident, or iOS Mail authentication loop can continue after a successful password change.
Why can I sign in but still not send or receive Outlook email?
The account may have reached either its Outlook.com mailbox limit or its OneDrive storage limit. Microsoft says either full location prevents sending and receiving, so check both quotas and empty retained folders or recycle bins.
Does removing Outlook from my phone delete my Microsoft emails?
Removing an account from a mail app removes the device’s local connection and cached data, not the cloud mailbox. Your messages remain in Outlook.com and can be accessed after you add the account to a supported client.
