A “tsmsisrv.dll is missing” message does not prove that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should contain that file. First identify when the dialog appears and which application or process displays it. If only one desktop program fails, repair, reset, update, or reinstall that program from its legitimate publisher. If Windows itself is malfunctioning or several programs report missing system files, use Microsoft’s supported DISM-then-SFC sequence from an elevated Command Prompt. Do not download a loose copy of tsmsisrv.dll from a DLL website: its origin, version, architecture, and intended owner may not match your installation.
The filename has appeared in historical Windows Server material and in security research about phantom DLL loading. Those references are not evidence that a current Windows 10/11 client PC universally needs it, nor that every alert means malware. A program is asking Windows to load a library named tsmsisrv.dll, and the load request is failing. The dialog alone does not identify the owner, cause, or correct replacement. The same text can appear when an application installation is incomplete, an update left a broken reference, a file was removed or quarantined, or a process is attempting to load a library that is not part of a normal client installation.
Microsoft documentation has listed TSMSISrv.dll in a Windows Server 2012 fix, with separate x64 and x86 entries. That is historical server evidence, not a requirement for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. A security-research entry describes tsmsisrv.dll as a “phantom DLL” that “normally doesn’t exist” in the particular DLL-hijacking context it documents. Treat that as a warning to examine the triggering program and file location, not as proof that an ordinary dialog is an infection.

How can I find what triggers the message?
Do this before copying, deleting, or registering any DLL. The trigger determines whether the safest repair is inside one application or at the Windows system-file level.
- Record the complete dialog. Note the exact wording, the time it appears, and any application name, path, or error code. A message during sign-in or startup is different from one that appears only after opening a game, launcher, utility, or other desktop program.
- Test the scope. Restart Windows once, then open the suspected application by itself. If the warning returns only for that program, classify it as an app-specific failure. If multiple unrelated programs fail, Windows Explorer behaves abnormally, or the error appears before any app opens, broader system corruption becomes more plausible.
- Check recent changes. Ask whether the problem began after an application update, a Windows update, a security product action, a drive cleanup, or an interrupted uninstall. Do not infer a single cause from the DLL name; no universal cause for this exact dialog has been established.
- Note the file path if one is shown. A path inside the affected application’s installation directory points toward that publisher’s files. An unexpected temporary folder, user profile location, or unfamiliar program deserves a security check before any repair.
What should I do when one desktop app displays the error?
Repair the application that produces the dialog before attempting Windows-wide repairs. Microsoft’s general Windows app guidance recommends restarting, using Repair when available, trying Reset if Repair does not help, and then uninstalling and reinstalling the program.
Restart and try the app again
Save your work, restart Windows, and launch only the affected program. A one-time update or locked file can clear after a restart. If the same dialog returns consistently, continue with the app’s maintenance options rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Use Repair or Reset in Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when the entry is available.
- Select Repair and test the application. Repair is intended to correct program files without changing normal app data.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data and settings, so make sure saves, profiles, or configuration files are backed up or synchronized first.
Use Repair or Reset in Windows 10
- Open Settings and choose Apps.
- In Apps & features, select the affected program and choose Advanced options if Windows provides it.
- Run Repair, test the program, and use Reset only if necessary, noting that Reset can clear local app data.
These controls are not available for every traditional desktop application. Some installers expose their own “Repair” command in Control Panel’s Programs and Features list; use it only when the publisher supplied it.

Reinstall from the legitimate publisher
If Repair and Reset are absent or ineffective, uninstall the affected program, restart Windows, and install the current package obtained from its legitimate publisher. Use the publisher’s documented installer for your Windows architecture and edition. Do not preserve a damaged DLL by copying it into the new installation directory. If the program is a game or launcher, back up local saves and confirm that cloud synchronization is complete before uninstalling.
If a clean reinstall still produces the same message, contact the application publisher with the full dialog, application version, Windows version, and the path shown in the error. That evidence is more useful than the filename alone. Microsoft’s general app guidance also lists Windows recovery options as a later measure when an application remains unusable.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use Windows’ built-in servicing tools when symptoms extend beyond one application or when you have evidence that protected Windows files are corrupted. The supported order is DISM first and SFC second. Running SFC alone first can leave it without a repaired component source.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator, then approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM may take several minutes. Microsoft says it normally uses Windows Update as a repair source, so keep the computer connected to the internet and do not close the window while the operation is running. Wait for DISM to report completion. If it returns an error, record the exact code and message; do not substitute a downloaded DLL for the component store.

Run SFC only after DISM completes
- In the same administrator Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow- Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting the scan can leave its result incomplete.
- Record the final statement exactly. Microsoft’s result categories determine the next action.
Microsoft describes SFC this way: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” That process applies to protected Windows files; it does not prove that an application-owned or phantom tsmsisrv.dll should be installed.
How should I interpret the SFC result?

Should I download tsmsisrv.dll from a DLL website?
No. Exact-name download pages show that third parties offer files, but their existence does not establish provenance, safety, compatibility with your Windows build, or a match for the application that requested the library. A file can have the right name and still be the wrong architecture, version, export set, or security state.
- Do not copy a DLL from another PC, an online archive, or a forum into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder. - Do not use registry cleaners to “repair” the reference.
- Do not run
regsvr32as a routine response. Most DLLs are not self-registering, and registration cannot create a missing dependency or make an incompatible file safe. - Do not disable security software simply to make the dialog disappear.
For a protected Windows component, use DISM and SFC. For an application component, use the publisher’s installer or repair package. Those sources preserve the dependency relationships that a single downloaded file cannot.

Could the filename indicate DLL hijacking or another security problem?
It can warrant investigation when the path or process is suspicious, but the dialog by itself is not proof of compromise. The security-research description of a phantom DLL concerns a DLL-hijacking technique in which a process is induced to load an unexpected library; it does not establish that every Windows 10/11 user seeing this name is infected.
- Write down the executable name and full path shown by the dialog or Task Manager.
- Do not launch an unfamiliar executable repeatedly just to reproduce the error.
- Open Windows Security, update its protection intelligence, and run a scan. Follow any detection or quarantine instructions it provides.
- Remove an unfamiliar application through Windows’ normal uninstall controls, then obtain replacement software only from its legitimate publisher.
- If the message returns from a known application after a clean reinstall, send the publisher the process path and complete error text.
Keep the investigation focused on the process that requests the file. Manually installing a DLL can conceal the original problem and create a new loading path for an untrusted binary.

A startup dialog usually means that a program configured to launch with Windows is making the request, not that Windows itself requires this DLL. Use Task Manager’s Startup apps list to identify recently added or unfamiliar entries, then verify the publisher before disabling or uninstalling one. If the entry belongs to a known application, repair or reinstall that application; if it is unknown, scan with Windows Security and avoid downloading the named DLL.
If startup also brings widespread crashes, missing system components, or Windows services that will not start, complete the DISM-then-SFC procedure. A startup-only warning with otherwise normal Windows operation is more consistent with an app or leftover startup entry than with a universal Windows dependency.

Does Windows 10’s end of support change this diagnosis?
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Existing Windows 10 PCs continue to run, but that lifecycle status is separate from whether a particular application or file reference is broken. It does not make a third-party DLL download authoritative, and it does not turn TSMSISrv.dll into a required Windows 10 component.
When planning a move to a supported Windows release, check the application’s compatibility and back up personal data first. Do not use an operating-system upgrade as a substitute for identifying the program that produced the error.
