UK game studios can now commission a studio-specific AI compliance review from trade association Ukie and games-law firm Sheridans. Announced on 19 October 2026, the service examines a studio’s real tools, licences and workflows, then either creates an AI-use policy or reviews an existing one. Studios that complete the process can use the Ukie AI Certification Mark in pitches, funding rounds and due-diligence discussions. The mark records completion of an expert-led review; it is not a government licence or a promise that every future use of AI will remain lawful.

What is Ukie’s AI compliance and accreditation service?

The service is a four-stage professional review for UK games businesses. Ukie provides the industry framework and recognition, while Sheridans applies specialist legal advice to the studio’s actual use of artificial-intelligence systems. The aim is to replace a generic policy download with documented decisions about the tools and content a particular studio handles.

Ukie says members have been experimenting with AI in different day-to-day ways while asking where legal and commercial risks sit. The service is intended to give publishers, investors and other partners evidence that those risks have been considered through a consistent process.

How does the four-stage process work?

  1. Confidential questionnaire: The studio records whether it uses AI, what tasks it performs, which third-party generative-AI services are involved and what licences apply.
  2. Initial assessment: Sheridans meets the studio and uses the questionnaire to identify material risk areas in its current practices.
  3. Tailored policy or review: Sheridans drafts a new AI-use policy or reviews and updates an existing one. The work is based on the studio’s tools and workflows rather than a one-size-fits-all template.
  4. Certification mark: Once the work is complete, the studio may use the Ukie AI Certification Mark as evidence that it has undergone the review.

What does the Ukie AI Certification Mark mean?

The mark is an industry recognition that the studio completed the Ukie-Sheridans review. It can be shown during publisher pitches, investment or funding rounds and commercial due diligence to signal that the studio has documented its approach to AI.

It should not be presented as statutory government certification, an approval of every individual AI output or a guarantee covering uses introduced after the review. Partners may still ask to see the underlying policy, records or contractual analysis before accepting the mark as sufficient evidence.

How much does the service cost?

Ukie publishes the following typical fees, excluding VAT. The lower ranges apply to Ukie members; non-members pay the higher ranges.

Service Ukie member Non-member What it covers
AI compliance check and new AI policy £1,500–£2,000 £2,000–£2,500 Initial assessment plus creation of a studio-specific policy
Existing AI policy review and ongoing compliance check £500–£750 £750–£1,000 Review and refresh of an existing policy, with an ongoing compliance check

These are typical published ranges for 2026, not a fixed quote. Studios should confirm scope, VAT and any follow-up work with the service before budgeting.

Should a studio create a new policy or review its existing one?

Choose a new-policy compliance check when no workable policy exists

The higher-priced service is intended for studios starting from scratch or whose current documents do not reflect their tools, licences and production practices. The result is a policy built around the studio’s own use cases rather than copied language that may omit relevant risks.

Choose an existing-policy review when processes are already documented

The lower-priced option is for a studio that has an AI policy but wants it checked against the current legal climate and its present operations. Sheridans has described refreshes as useful when a policy is a couple of years old or when the studio is planning a substantial change in how it uses AI.

Why might the policy need updating?

AI law and broader public policy are changing frequently, according to Sheridans partner Anna Poulter-Jones. A policy that was suitable for one set of tools may not address a newly adopted model, a changed licence, a different data flow or a new production use. Ukie’s service therefore treats compliance as something to revisit when the law changes or when the studio materially changes its AI practices, rather than as a permanent one-time clearance.

  • Record each AI service and the licence or terms governing it.
  • Keep the policy aligned with how teams actually create, edit and ship game assets.
  • Recheck the policy after a material workflow change or significant legal-development.
  • Retain review records so a publisher, investor or funder can understand what was assessed.

How is this different from a generic AI-policy template?

A template states general rules but cannot know which models a studio uses, what prompts contain, how generated material is edited or which contractual licences apply. This service starts with a confidential inventory and a meeting, then ties the policy to those facts. That tailored record is the main distinction between internal legal-process documentation and a downloaded form.

What should studios prepare before contacting the service?

  1. List every AI tool used by employees or contractors, including tools used for code, art, audio, writing, testing or administration.
  2. Note the account owner, plan or licence and whether prompts or uploaded material are retained or used for provider training under the applicable terms.
  3. Identify where AI-generated or AI-assisted material enters the game, marketing, documentation or customer support.
  4. Gather any existing AI, data-protection, confidentiality, procurement and intellectual-property policies.
  5. Nominate people who can explain the workflow and approve policy changes.

This preparation does not replace Sheridans’ assessment; it makes the questionnaire and initial meeting more complete.

What the announcement does not establish

Ukie and Sheridans have published no independent adoption total, approval rate or outcome statistic for the service. The available announcement also does not state that the mark is accepted by every publisher, investor or public funder, so studios should treat it as supporting evidence rather than a substitute for a counterparty’s own legal or procurement requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the service intended for?

It is aimed at UK games studios, whether they are introducing AI or already have documented processes. The member and non-member fee bands indicate that both Ukie members and studios outside membership can apply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the published prices one-off or recurring?

The figures are typical fees for the specified pieces of work and exclude VAT. The service description includes an ongoing compliance-check option, but it does not publish a universal subscription schedule or mandatory renewal date.

Can a studio display the mark on its game or website?

The announcement specifically identifies pitches, funding rounds and due diligence as uses. Studios should obtain the service’s branding guidance before placing the mark on a product page, packaging or marketing campaign.

Does completing the review clear third-party AI output for commercial release?

No. The review documents the studio’s controls and policy; responsibility for checking rights, licences, confidentiality and contractual obligations for a particular asset remains with the studio and its advisers.
