For most teams making an original horror game for independent release, choose Unreal Engine 5. Its documented game-licensing route and mature tools for dynamic lighting, detailed geometry, procedural audio, and gameplay scripting make production and distribution easier to plan. A Source 2-based route is viable through Facepunch’s s&box, but standalone export is still in preview, requires individual Valve approval and a Facepunch standalone license, and is currently PC-only.
Source 2 is not one single publishing option. Valve’s tools included with Half-Life: Alyx are aimed at building Workshop levels, while s&box is a separate Source 2-based platform with its own export rules. The right choice depends less on which engine sounds more atmospheric and more on where you intend to ship, how much release uncertainty you can accept, and which workflow your team can support.

Which engine should most indie horror teams choose?
Unreal Engine 5 is the safer default when the goal is an original game with a predictable path to a commercial PC, console, or potentially mobile release. That recommendation follows the published release conditions, not a claim that UE5 renders every scene faster or looks inherently scarier.
s&box deserves consideration when a project is specifically PC-focused, benefits from built-in multiplayer or VR systems, and has a team comfortable with C#. It remains a conditional choice: the standalone exporter is in preview, Facepunch says approval is not automatic, Valve assesses projects individually, and no guaranteed approval timeline is published.

For a horror level made for Half-Life: Alyx, use Valve’s supplied tools. That is a different outcome from shipping an unrelated horror game under your own title.
What does “Source 2” mean in this comparison?
Three products are often treated as interchangeable, but they are not.
Unreal Engine 5 as a licensed game engine
UE5 is the engine option in this comparison for building and distributing an original game under Epic’s published game-license terms. Its editor, rendering systems, audio tools, and gameplay framework are designed for general projects rather than for one particular host game.
Source 2 tools supplied with Half-Life: Alyx
Valve’s Half-Life: Alyx page says the included Source 2 tools let players build new levels and contribute environments for the community. That describes Workshop creation inside the Alyx ecosystem; it does not establish a blanket right to package and sell a separate standalone horror game.
s&box, a separate Source 2-based platform
Facepunch released s&box on April 28, 2026. It provides a C# workflow, a visual editor, ActionGraph, networking, VR support, and a documented standalone-export process. Those facilities and the Alyx Workshop tools should be evaluated separately, because their ownership, distribution, and approval conditions differ.
Can I make a standalone horror game in Source 2?
Yes, the current practical route is s&box, but it is not an unrestricted Source 2 download-and-ship path. Standalone export is explicitly described as being in preview and is gated by project approval and licensing.

- Define the release target. Treat the current exporter as a PC route. Do not plan a mobile or console launch around it, because the export documentation currently says standalone exports are PC-only.
- Prototype the game in s&box. Facepunch documents C# scripting with hot reloading, a visual editor, ActionGraph for visual interaction authoring, built-in networking, and VR tools. Build the horror loop, multiplayer assumptions, and input model around the features your project actually needs.
- Contact Facepunch before distribution. Its EULA directs creators to make contact before distributing a standalone s&box title. Access to an exporter or the existence of a Steam store page is not, by itself, distribution permission.
- Seek individual approval and the standalone license. Valve reviews each project, and Facepunch requires its standalone license. Facepunch gives no guaranteed approval timeline or automatic-approval promise, so make this a schedule gate rather than a paperwork task at the end.
- Prepare the shipped build. The export documentation requires replacement of default Citizen models and clothing before standalone shipment. Account for that content work in the art plan.
- Plan the storefront release. The documented route requires a Steam release first or a simultaneous Steam release if the game also launches elsewhere. Storefront terms still apply even when the engine royalty is zero.
A standalone s&box project does not have to be published inside s&box first, according to Facepunch’s export guidance. That does not remove the approval, licensing, content, or storefront requirements above.
Can I use Half-Life: Alyx’s tools to sell my own game?
There is no established general right to do that in the official material cited here. Valve describes the tools as a way to build and contribute new Alyx environments to the community, not as a generally available commercial Source 2 license.
You can make a horror level for the Alyx Workshop and distribute it through that community channel. Selling an unrelated standalone game requires a separate legal and technical basis; do not infer one from owning Alyx, using Hammer, or uploading a Workshop level. The reviewed official sources also do not establish a direct Valve Source 2 license open to every developer, so avoid both “anyone can ship Source 2” and “Valve never licenses Source 2” claims.
How does Unreal Engine 5 support horror atmosphere?
UE5 supplies systems that can support common horror techniques, but none creates pacing, scares, or sound design automatically.
Lumen for changing light and shadow
Epic’s Lumen documentation describes dynamic global illumination, reflections, and skylight shadowing. A flashlight moving through a room, a door opening onto daylight, or a character crossing between exterior and interior lighting can therefore be authored as a changing lighting problem rather than a sequence of baked lightmaps.
Budget for the trade-offs. Epic notes that small bright emissive sources can create noise, dynamic global lighting can take time to propagate, and higher-fidelity settings can raise GPU cost. A dark corridor that works in the editor still needs measurement on the hardware your players will use.

Nanite for dense architecture and props
Nanite can help represent detailed geometry in buildings, debris, and props without reducing every asset to a traditional low-polygon workflow. Epic also documents practical limits and recommends measuring actual content; it is not a guarantee that a scene with unlimited detail will run acceptably. Nanite’s documentation recommends SSD runtime storage, so storage speed belongs in the hardware budget as well as the graphics budget.
MetaSounds for event-driven audio
MetaSounds supports procedural, game-event-driven audio. A designer can use gameplay state, distance, timing, or random variation to shape a breathing layer, electrical buzz, or impact response instead of triggering one identical clip every time. The tool provides the mechanism; tension still comes from composition, silence, timing, and playtesting.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Blueprints for gameplay iteration
Blueprints is a node-based gameplay system that can be extended with C++. It is useful for wiring triggers, scripted scares, doors, inventory checks, and state changes while designers iterate without rewriting every interaction in native code. Complex systems may still warrant C++ or a clear hybrid architecture.
How do the two workflows compare for scripting, networking, VR, and audio?
The following is a capability comparison from the documented toolsets, not a frame-rate ranking.
| Area | Unreal Engine 5 | s&box | Half-Life: Alyx tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gameplay authoring | Blueprints, extendable with C++ | C#, visual editor, ActionGraph | Hammer and Alyx-specific level workflows |
| Dynamic lighting and reflections | Lumen supports dynamic global illumination, reflections, and skylight shadowing | Specific equivalent capability not established in the cited material | Tools are intended for Alyx environments, not a general engine comparison |
| Geometry | Nanite for detailed geometry, with documented practical limits | Specific equivalent capability not established in the cited material | Source 2 level-building tools for Workshop content |
| Audio | MetaSounds for procedural, event-driven audio | Specific equivalent capability not established in the cited material | Alyx project and Workshop context |
| Networking | Engine networking systems available; project architecture remains the team’s responsibility | Facepunch documents built-in networking | Not a general standalone multiplayer engine option |
| VR | Platform and project configuration required for the intended headset | Facepunch documents VR tools | Designed around Half-Life: Alyx’s VR context |
| Standalone release | Published game-license route | Preview exporter; individual approval and Facepunch license required; PC-only at present | Workshop-level distribution, not an established general standalone license |
Which engine fits PC, console, mobile, VR, and multiplayer plans?
Original PC horror game
Both UE5 and s&box can be candidates for a PC project, but UE5 has the more predictable release baseline. s&box’s approval and license process must be resolved before the team treats it as a shippable commercial route.
Console or potential mobile release
Start with UE5 and verify the requirements of each target platform’s program. Epic advertises broad platform support under its engine licensing offer, but console access, certification, platform-holder agreements, and project requirements remain separate matters. s&box’s current standalone export documentation does not provide a console or mobile path.

PC VR horror
s&box is worth prototyping when its documented VR tools and C# workflow match the team. UE5 is the safer choice when the project may expand to other platforms or when the team wants to avoid making Valve approval a release dependency.
Multiplayer horror
s&box’s built-in networking can reduce the amount of foundational multiplayer plumbing a team must design. That advantage does not remove the need to validate replication, authority, matchmaking, persistence, moderation, and the final approval route. UE5 remains viable when the team already has a network architecture or needs broader platform planning.
What hardware and storage should you budget for development?
Epic’s documented Windows development recommendation is 32 GB of system RAM and 8 GB or more of graphics memory. These are development recommendations, not comparative performance scores or a promise that every horror scene will meet a particular frame rate.
Match the memory generation and form factor to the motherboard and workstation, and reserve an internal SSD for projects using Nanite and large source assets. Facepunch’s cited s&box material does not provide an equivalent complete hardware table in the evidence considered here, so do not invent a like-for-like minimum specification.
For a real decision, identify the lowest target machine, headset, display resolution, storage device, and operating system you intend to support. Then profile a representative level containing the actual lighting, geometry density, audio graph, AI, and networking load. No published apples-to-apples UE5-versus-s&box horror benchmark establishes a universal winner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do royalties, licenses, and approval affect the budget?
Epic’s standard game-license page says a 5% royalty applies to revenue above $1 million in attributable lifetime gross product revenue, and that sales generated through the Epic Games Store are royalty-free. That threshold and rate are product-revenue terms for the specified route, not a claim that every business exceeding $1 million owes game royalties.

Facepunch says approved standalone s&box exports have no engine royalties, but “no royalties” is not the same as permission to distribute. Approval, the Facepunch standalone license, replacement of default content, Steam release requirements, and ordinary storefront terms still affect cost and schedule. If approval is not obtained, the advertised zero engine royalty does not create a usable standalone route.
Check the current Epic licensing page and Facepunch’s current standalone documentation immediately before signing contracts. Release conditions can change, and a project plan should be based on the terms in force when the game ships.

What should you prototype before committing?
Build a small vertical slice that contains the systems most likely to decide the engine, then measure it on representative target hardware. This is a decision method, not a claim that either engine has been benchmarked here.
- Write the release brief. Record target platforms, storefronts, VR requirements, multiplayer scope, expected team skills, and whether a Valve approval gate is acceptable.
- Choose one representative room. Include the real flashlight behavior, interior-to-exterior transition, reflective or emissive surfaces, dense props, AI or scripted events, and the intended audio layers.
- Implement the horror loop. Prototype exploration, an interaction, a scare or pursuit, failure recovery, save behavior, and the amount of scripted sequencing the final game needs.
- Measure the right constraints. Record frame time, memory use, shader or asset iteration time, loading behavior, network correctness where relevant, and headset comfort for a VR project. Compare the same scene and settings rather than marketing feature lists.
- Validate distribution early. For s&box, ask Facepunch about the concrete project, approval requirements, license, content restrictions, and expected export route before committing to a schedule. For UE5, confirm the target platform’s separate developer and certification requirements.
- Make the decision reversible where possible. Keep gameplay data, audio assets, and design documentation organized so a rejected export route or changed platform target does not invalidate the entire project.
What are the most common decision mistakes?
- Calling all Source 2 tools “the Source 2 engine.” Alyx Workshop tools and s&box have different purposes and release conditions.
- Treating s&box approval as automatic. Facepunch explicitly describes standalone export as preview-only and gives no guaranteed timeline.
- Reading “no royalties” as “no license.” The standalone license and approval remain release gates.
- Planning console or mobile support from a PC-only export. Rework the platform plan before production, not after the game is complete.
- Assuming a rendering feature guarantees atmosphere. Lumen, Nanite, MetaSounds, and ActionGraph provide systems; pacing, composition, level design, and iteration determine the experience.
- Using headline hardware recommendations as a performance guarantee. Profile the representative scene on the slowest supported machine.
- Relying on an old pre-release s&box article. s&box is now released, but its standalone export remains subject to the current preview documentation and approval process.
What is the final recommendation?
Choose Unreal Engine 5 when you are making an original horror game and need the most predictable path to independent commercial release, especially if console or mobile support may matter. Its documented licensing route and integrated lighting, geometry, audio, and gameplay tools give a team a clear production baseline, while still requiring real profiling and strong horror design.
Choose s&box when its C#, ActionGraph, networking, or VR workflow is central to the project and a PC-first release is acceptable. Contact Facepunch early, treat Valve approval and the standalone license as non-negotiable gates, and budget for the preview export’s content and storefront requirements. Use the Alyx tools for Alyx Workshop levels, not as evidence of a general commercial Source 2 license.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is s&box out yet?
Yes. Facepunch’s Steam listing gives April 28, 2026 as the release date. Guides written before that date can therefore be stale, but release status does not change the separate preview and approval conditions for standalone export.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes a standalone s&box project have to be published inside s&box first?
No. Facepunch’s export guidance says a standalone project need not first be published inside the s&box platform. The project still needs the required approval, standalone license, content changes, and storefront compliance.
What happens if Valve does not approve my s&box game?
The documented standalone route cannot be treated as available without that approval. Plan a fallback engine or a different distribution outcome before production makes the project dependent on an uncertain gate.
Is Unreal Engine 5 free for an indie horror game?
Epic’s published game-license route is centered on a revenue royalty rather than a seat subscription in the terms cited here. The standard figure is 5% above $1 million in attributable lifetime gross product revenue, with Epic Games Store sales excluded; verify the current agreement for your project before release.
