The 2024 Until Dawn remake adds a route in which Josh survives as a human. To unlock it, choose “They hurt me” and then “I’m so sorry” during Josh’s Chapter 8 therapy session, then have Sam find and read the Scrawled Journal beside the waterwheel in the Chapter 10 mines. The journal lets Hannah recognize Josh as her brother and spare him. If you miss either part, Josh can still become a Wendigo.
This ending is exclusive to the remake released for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, 2024; it is not part of the 2015 PlayStation 4 version. The remake’s release and walkthrough details distinguish the two versions.

What is different about Josh’s new ending?
In the original game, Josh’s surviving outcome ends with him transforming into a Wendigo. The remake adds a more hopeful branch: Josh remains human after Hannah finds him in the mines.

It is not a conventional rescue. Josh does not simply return to the lodge with the other survivors. Instead, Hannah catches him underground, recognizes her brother, and chooses not to kill him. Josh’s remorseful therapy route determines whether he remains human or eventually transforms.

How to unlock the human Josh ending
- Reach Josh’s therapy session with Dr. Hill in Chapter 8.
- Select “They hurt me”.
- Select “I’m so sorry” as the next response.
- In Chapter 10, control Sam in the mines and reach the underground water area.
- Leave the main route and move toward the left side of the waterwheel.
- Find and read the collectible called the Scrawled Journal.
- Continue through the finale, including the required Don’t Move sequences.
The Chapter 8 dialogue and Chapter 10 journal are separate requirements. Finding the journal alone does not guarantee the human result.

Chapter 8: choosing Josh’s remorse response
During Josh’s session with Dr. Hill, the key responses are presented in this order:

The second response is the important remorse choice. It changes Josh’s psychological outcome so that the later Hannah encounter can resolve with him staying human.
If “I’m so sorry” does not appear
Earlier therapy answers, along with relationship and behavior choices, affect the responses available in the final session. One published route uses the following selections:

This is a documented route, not a proven exclusive combination. Community reports indicate that more than one set of earlier choices can expose “I’m so sorry”. If the option appears in Chapter 8, selecting the two remorse responses is the decisive step; you do not necessarily need to reproduce every answer above. Chapter 10: where to find the Scrawled Journal
When Sam reaches the underground water area in Chapter 10, do not remain on the obvious main path. Move toward the left side of the waterwheel and interact with the Scrawled Journal.

Read the journal before continuing. It provides the clue that allows Josh to recognize Hannah when she finds him. Without it, Josh does not receive the recognition-based reprieve required for the new human ending.
What happens in the finale?
Hannah catches Josh in the mines, but the journal gives him a way to identify her rather than treating the encounter as an attack by an unknown Wendigo. Because Josh also selected the remorse response in therapy, Hannah spares him and Josh remains human.
The scene should therefore be understood as a combination of remorse and recognition:
- The therapy choices establish Josh’s remorseful route.
- The journal lets Josh recognize Hannah.
- Hannah’s recognition of Josh prevents the usual transformation outcome.
Josh is not restored to a normal life at the lodge during this sequence. The ending is a survival outcome in the mines, not a full physical rescue.
What if you read the journal but miss the therapy choices?
Reading the Scrawled Journal without unlocking Josh’s remorse route can still produce the recognition scene, but it does not necessarily redeem Josh. In that case, he can survive the immediate encounter and still be shown transforming into a Wendigo—the outcome associated with the original game.
That is why both requirements matter. The journal is not a replacement for the Chapter 8 dialogue path.

Are other character deaths allowed?
You do not need to pursue the general “everyone survives” route merely to unlock Sam’s post-credits epilogue. For Josh’s exact human outcome, however, community testing reports that some Wendigo-caused deaths among the group can force Josh’s breakdown or transformation. That condition is not corroborated as a universal official rule by the published walkthrough requirements, so it is safest to keep as many characters alive as possible if you want the most reliable human-Josh run.
Two commonly repeated requirements are not established by the concise ending instructions:
- Saving Josh in the earlier saw-trap sequence: community testing reports that this is not required for the human ending.
- Saving every character: this is not required for Sam’s epilogue, although avoiding Wendigo-related deaths may reduce risk to Josh’s outcome.
In practice, the dependable checklist is still the same: unlock “I’m so sorry”, read the journal, and handle the finale’s survival sequences correctly.
Sam’s added post-credits epilogue
The remake also adds a post-credits scene for Sam, but it is a separate condition from Josh’s human ending. Sam must survive. The survival status of the other characters does not determine whether the scene appears.
The epilogue shows Sam later in bed with a scar on her arm and includes a voice calling her name. Community analysis commonly identifies the voice as Dr. Hill’s, but that interpretation has not been officially explained by the developers. The scene suggests that Sam’s ordeal may not be over and has been described as teasing a possible sequel; it does not definitively confirm that Until Dawn 2 has been announced. The ending walkthrough covers the epilogue’s condition, while community discussion covers the voice interpretation.

Does this ending confirm Until Dawn 2?
No. The Sam epilogue leaves room for a continuation, but it is not official confirmation of a sequel. Likewise, the identity of the voice is an interpretation rather than a developer-confirmed explanation. Treat both points as story hints, not established announcements.
