Spoilers for the 2025 Until Dawn film and the original game follow. The movie’s survivors escape the Glore Valley house at sunrise, but the story is not over. After the credits, Dr. Hill’s monitors turn on, his familiar whistle confirms that he is alive, and the screens show Washington Lodge on Blackwood Mountain—the defining location from the game. That image is the film’s clearest continuity bridge. The movie shares the game’s universe and Dr. Hill, yet it follows Clover and a new group through an original, repeating-night experiment rather than retelling the Washington family tragedy. The ending deliberately leaves the film’s exact place in the timeline unresolved: it could be an expansion after the game, a story that precedes it, or a separate branch in the same continuity.
What happens in Until Dawn’s post-credits scene?
After Clover and the surviving members of her group leave the house and reach the surface at dawn, the post-credits scene cuts back to Dr. Hill’s office. His monitors switch on one by one. Hill whistles, signaling that he survived Clover’s attack, and the screens display Washington Lodge on Blackwood Mountain.

The scene is short, but each detail matters. The survivors’ sunrise escape is the film’s apparent conclusion; the office sequence is a separate reveal after the credits. It does not show the Glore Valley house again. Instead, it introduces the game’s Washington Lodge as the next location under Hill’s observation.
That choice makes the final shot a handoff rather than a conventional twist. Hill’s experiment may have ended for Clover’s group, but the wider horror system—and the connection to the game—remains active.

How does the film’s main ending lead into the reveal?
Hill explains that the house’s monsters and deaths are components of an experiment designed to create “perfect horror.” Clover discovers that at least one death is required for the group to escape. She forces Hill to drink water collected from a roof leak, and his body explodes. Believing the threat has ended, the survivors leave Glore Valley at sunrise.
His appearance after the credits changes the meaning of that apparent victory. Hill was not removed from the story; he was watching, recording and preparing whatever comes next. The monitors’ image of Washington Lodge expands the experiment’s scope beyond the film’s original house.

Washington Lodge is the film’s direct visual reference to the original game. The game’s story centers on eight friends returning to the Washington family’s lodge on Blackwood Mountain after Hannah and Beth Washington disappear. Showing that same lodge on Hill’s screens tells viewers that the film’s world includes the game’s setting, not merely its title and mythology.
The shot is more specific than a generic snowy mountain or an unnamed cabin. It identifies the Washington family location by name and places it inside Hill’s monitoring system. In practical terms, the film is saying that the events at Glore Valley belong to the same continuity framework as the lodge tragedy, even though the movie does not put Clover’s group inside the game’s plot.
Nothing in the scene confirms that the movie’s house and Washington Lodge are the same building. They are separate settings: Glore Valley is the film’s experimental location, while Blackwood Mountain is the game’s defining environment. The connection comes from continuity and surveillance, not from a claim that the characters visited one identical house.

How directly does the movie connect to the original game?
The connection is substantial but limited. PlayStation’s adaptation announcement describes a shared world, fresh characters and an original story, with Peter Stormare’s Dr. Hill serving as a key link. The final image adds Washington Lodge to those shared elements. The movie is therefore neither a scene-for-scene adaptation nor an unrelated horror film using the same name.
| Continuity element | Movie | Original game | What the ending establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| World | Glore Valley and Hill’s experiment | Blackwood Mountain and the Washington tragedy | Both exist within the same stated universe |
| Dr. Hill | Experiment architect and overt antagonist | Part of the psychological framing around Josh Washington’s lodge story | Stormare’s returning character is the clearest human link |
| Location | The Glore Valley house | Washington Lodge on Blackwood Mountain | The post-credits monitors deliberately show the game location |
| Protagonists | Clover, Melanie and their friends | Eight playable friends connected to Hannah and Beth Washington | The film uses a new cast and does not retell the game |
| Structure | A fixed repeating-night experiment | Player choices determine survival in a branching narrative | The movie echoes the game’s consequence-driven horror without copying its mechanics |
| Ending | One canonical sunrise escape followed by Hill’s reveal | Hundreds of possible ending variations based on the characters’ fates | The film has its own outcome rather than one of the game’s player-created results |
The table’s most important distinction is agency. The game lets a player’s decisions determine who survives. The movie presents one authored loop and one authored reveal. Its relationship to the game is thematic and world-building-based, not a claim that the film depicts one possible playthrough.
Who are the movie’s characters compared with the game’s?
Clover’s group is not a disguised version of the game’s eight friends. The film follows Clover, Melanie and their companions as they investigate the Glore Valley house. The game follows friends drawn back to the Washington lodge after Hannah and Beth disappear. Their settings, personal histories and immediate objectives are different.
This separation allows the movie to use the game’s ideas without erasing the original story. The Washington family tragedy remains the game’s central setup, while Clover’s story supplies a new entry point into the same supernatural and psychological territory. The post-credits shot acknowledges the game’s cast and location indirectly, rather than inserting them into the film’s experiment.
Does the film retell the Washington family tragedy?
No. The movie does not recreate the disappearance of Hannah and Beth, the friends’ return to the lodge or the game’s sequence of player-controlled discoveries. Its plot is built around Hill’s repeated-night test in Glore Valley. The Washington tragedy is represented by the lodge image and the shared setting, not retold as the film’s main narrative.

Is Dr. Hill the same character in the movie and game?
Peter Stormare plays Dr. Hill in the movie, and PlayStation identifies his return as a key connection to the game. The character’s identity is therefore intentionally shared, but his narrative function is not identical in both versions.
In the film, Hill is the experiment’s architect. He explains the monsters’ psychological symbolism, designs the repeated deaths and treats the survivors as subjects in a program intended to produce “perfect horror.” His manipulation is direct, and the ending confirms that he remains active after Clover appears to defeat him.
In the game, official PlayStation material places Dr. Hill within Josh Washington’s lodge tragedy and its player-driven psychological framing. The game’s structure uses Hill differently: he is part of the story’s unsettling interpretation of trauma and perception, while the player’s choices determine the friends’ outcomes. The film turns him into a more overt antagonist and organizer.
Stormare described the film as “a love letter to horror” that “completely honors the spirit of the game.” That claim fits the distinction: the movie preserves the game’s tone, decision pressure and psychological horror while giving Hill a more visible villain role.
Is the Until Dawn movie a prequel or a sequel to the game?
There is no confirmed chronology. Director David F. Sandberg said the timeline “can be left open, at least until they want to do a sequel.” During production, the filmmakers discussed the possibility that the movie occurs after the game, while the ending’s presentation of Washington Lodge can also suggest that it comes before the lodge events. Neither interpretation has been established as canon.

The safest description is “same-universe expansion with an intentionally open timeline.” Calling it a confirmed prequel goes beyond the available statement, and calling it a confirmed sequel does the same. The movie can function as a side story regardless of which order viewers eventually assign to the two narratives.
Why does the final image support both readings?
If Hill is monitoring Washington Lodge after the Glore Valley experiment, the film can be read as leading toward the game’s events. If the lodge is another case already inside his system, the film can be read as taking place afterward. Because the scene supplies no date, dialogue or character crossover that fixes the order, the ambiguity is deliberate rather than an unresolved continuity error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the repeating-night structure echo the game?
The movie’s loop is a thematic translation of the game’s consequence system. Each cycle presents another attempt to survive the house, and deaths reset the night so the characters—and the audience—can confront different combinations of fear and loss. Hill uses that repetition as a controlled experiment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The game does not literally reset the same night after every death. Instead, it offers branching decisions whose consequences persist through the story. A character can survive or die, relationships can change, and the resulting ending can differ. Official PlayStation material describes hundreds of ending variations depending on the fates of the eight playable characters.
Both formats make survival unstable, but they give control to different parties. Hill controls the film’s loop until Clover learns its rule; the player controls the game’s branching outcomes through choices. The movie borrows the pressure of irreversible-looking decisions while delivering a single canonical resolution.

What does the ending mean for a possible sequel?
Hill’s survival and the Washington Lodge monitors leave a clear opening for another story. The reveal establishes that the experiment’s operator is still present and that the game’s location is within his field of interest. It does not promise that Clover will visit the lodge, that the original game characters will appear, or that a sequel will follow a particular chronology.
Because Sandberg explicitly left the order open, a future installment could move forward from Clover’s escape, move backward toward the lodge events or introduce another case in the same world. The ending creates options without committing the series to one of them.

What should viewers remember about the final shot?
- The survivors’ sunrise escape occurs before the credits; Hill’s office is a post-credits scene.
- Hill survives and remains connected to the experiment after Clover appears to defeat him.
- The monitors show Washington Lodge on Blackwood Mountain, the game’s defining location.
- The film shares the game’s world and Dr. Hill but follows Clover’s original Glore Valley story.
- The movie’s repeating deaths echo the game’s survival design, while the game retains player-controlled branching outcomes.
- The film’s status as a prequel or sequel is intentionally unconfirmed.
Where can you revisit the two versions?
The film is available through its current release and streaming arrangements, which vary by region and can change over time. Sony Pictures has also listed 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions. For the interactive side of the connection, the rebuilt Until Dawn game is available for PlayStation 5 and PC, preserving the branching survival structure that the movie reinterprets.
Watching the film first makes the post-credits lodge image function as a surprise. Playing the game afterward reveals why Washington Lodge, Blackwood Mountain and the Washington family carry such specific significance. Either order makes the distinction between shared continuity and separate plot easier to see.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dr. Hill die in the Until Dawn movie?
Clover causes Hill’s body to explode after making him drink water from the roof leak, but the post-credits scene confirms that he survived. His whistle and active monitors show that the apparent death was not the end of his role.
Is the Glore Valley house the same place as Washington Lodge?
The film treats them as different locations. Glore Valley is the site of Clover’s experiment, while Washington Lodge is the Blackwood Mountain location shown in the game and on Hill’s final monitors.

The movie uses Clover, Melanie and a new group rather than the game’s eight playable friends. The game’s characters and Washington family tragedy are referenced through the shared world and lodge connection, not repeated as the film’s cast.
Why does the movie reset after a character dies?
The resets are part of Hill’s experiment to refine an ideal form of fear. They also let the film explore the game’s emphasis on survival consequences without giving viewers the player-controlled branching system that determines the game’s outcomes.
