Use AI to draft a narrowly defined Verse change, then verify it inside UEFN and a Fortnite play session. Epic’s Developer Assistant can explain Verse, generate code and provide guided steps online or in UEFN. The newer UEFN MCP integration can let a compatible AI agent inspect or edit project Verse, compile it, work with devices and interact with supported play-session tools, but Epic labels it beta. In both routes, an AI response is only a proposal: a successful build proves syntax and compilation, not that the placed device, event wiring or runtime behavior is correct.
Which AI route should you use for Verse?
Choose the Developer Assistant when you need an explanation, a first draft or step-by-step guidance. Choose UEFN MCP when you have completed its setup and want an agent with supported access to project files and editor operations. You can also use both: ask for a small change with the Assistant, then use normal UEFN tools to build and test it.

Epic’s announcement on August 20, 2026 describes the integration as beta and says, “Unreal MCP in UEFN is in beta, so expect some rough edges and more capabilities on the way.” Treat an agent’s report as a progress signal, not as an independent test certificate.
What do you need before asking AI to change Verse?
Prepare a UEFN project, a clear expected outcome and the names of the devices involved. The actual check happens in UEFN and the Fortnite client, not in a text editor alone.

- A current UEFN project with permission to edit its Verse files and level.
- The bundled Verse extension for VS Code. Epic identifies it as the only officially supported Verse language extension; editor diagnostics can miss compiler errors, so the UEFN build command remains authoritative.
- A Fortnite client available for Launch Session playtesting.
- A specific trigger and an observable result, such as a round-start message, a barrier opening or an event causing a named device to change state.
- The names of existing Verse devices and Creative devices, including which references must be assigned in the Details panel.
Do not begin with “make my game better.” An AI cannot reliably infer which event, device instance or multiplayer rule you mean. A one-behavior request gives you a small diff to review and a test you can reproduce.
How should you phrase a safe, useful AI request?
State the current context, one requested change, the expected observation and a strict boundary against claiming gameplay success. Ask the agent to explain changed lines and to report build output separately from runtime observations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Describe the existing project. Give the Verse device class, relevant imports, event names and the Creative devices that already exist. Do not paste secrets or unrelated files.
- Define one behavior. Specify the trigger, the actor or device affected and the visible or logged result.
- Identify references. Say which objects are expected to be
@editablefields and how you intend to assign them in UEFN. - Set a review boundary. Request the smallest change, an explanation of each changed section and no assertion that gameplay passed until you run it.
- Request a build-oriented response. Ask for likely compiler risks and the exact command or UI path to build, rather than a vague “it should work.”
A grounded request can look like this:
In my existing Verse device, add a log message when the round starts. Keep the edit small and show the changed lines. Explain any event and import assumptions, identify any @editable references that must be assigned in UEFN, and tell me to run Verse > Build Verse Code. Report the build result separately; do not claim that gameplay passed.
Epic’s UEFN MCP material uses a comparable round-start logging-and-compilation task as an example. Adapt the wording to your own class and event names instead of asking for a whole system at once.
How do you create a Verse device that can run in a level?
A Verse file is source code; it is not automatically a gameplay device in your map. Create a Verse Device file, compile it, then place the resulting device in the level.
- In UEFN, open Verse > Verse Explorer.
- Add a new Verse file using the Verse Device template. Give the class a distinctive name that matches the behavior you requested.
- Open the file in VS Code and provide the AI with only the relevant context. Save the proposed edit.
- Return to UEFN and choose Verse > Build Verse Code. Resolve compiler diagnostics before attempting a play session.
- After a successful build, find the generated Verse device in the project’s device list and drag it into the level.
The distinction between source and placement explains many “it compiles but does nothing” reports: code that is never instantiated in the map cannot receive the level’s events.
What should you review in AI-generated Verse before building?
Read the code as a design proposal. Confirm that its names and assumptions match your project before relying on the compiler to catch mistakes.

Events and repeated calls
Inspect subscription timing, whether a handler can fire more than once and what happens when several players trigger it. If the requested mechanic is single-use, make that state explicit; if it is repeatable, check that state resets at the intended time.
@editable references
An editable field is a connection point to an object in the level, not an automatic lookup. Ensure the generated field has the right device type and that the intended instance will be assigned in UEFN.
Failure handling
Look for optional values, invalid references and assumptions about players or agents. Ask the AI to explain what the code does when a reference is absent or an event arrives in an unexpected order. Keep the correction focused instead of accepting a wholesale rewrite.
How do you compile Verse reliably?
Use UEFN’s Verse > Build Verse Code command and read its diagnostics. VS Code’s bundled extension is useful for editing and preliminary checks, but Epic warns that its diagnostics can miss errors found by the project build.
- Save the Verse file and allow UEFN to refresh the project.
- Run Verse > Build Verse Code.
- Read the first actionable error in the Message Log or Output Log, including the file and line number.
- Give the AI the actual diagnostic and the smallest surrounding code needed to reason about it. Do not paraphrase an error if you can copy its wording.
- Apply one correction, build again and confirm that the new output is clean before moving to device wiring.
A green build establishes that the compiler accepted the current source. It does not establish that the class is placed, that editable references are assigned or that the event will occur during a Fortnite session.
How do you wire the compiled device to the level?
Place the compiled Verse device and assign every required editable reference in its Details panel before launching a session.
Recommended Free Tools
- Drag the Verse device from the Content Browser or device list into the level.
- Select the placed instance and open Details.
- For each
@editablefield, choose the intended Creative device instance. Match both type and purpose; two devices of the same type can still produce different results. - Check defaults, channels, teams, collision settings and other properties that the Verse logic assumes.
- Save the level and verify that the placed instance, not merely the source file, is part of the current map.
Epic’s barrier example illustrates why an initialized reference in code does not automatically point to the level device you had in mind. Treat the Details-panel assignment as part of the implementation, not as optional configuration.
How do you launch and observe a Verse test?
Run the behavior in a Fortnite client and compare a specific expected result with what you see and what the logs report.

- With the project built and wired, click Launch Session in UEFN.
- In the Fortnite client, choose Start Game.
- Perform the exact trigger from your request: start a round, enter a volume, interact with a device or perform the relevant player action.
- Observe the visible mechanic and record whether the expected state changed.
- Check the in-game Log and UEFN’s Output Log for the message, warning or error associated with the trigger.
UEFN playtesting runs through a Fortnite client; it is not equivalent to executing a Verse file in the editor. If you change only Verse while a session is active, build and use Push Verse Changes. If you changed placed devices or their editor properties as well, use Push Changes. Repeat the interaction after the appropriate push rather than assuming the old session reflects the new map state.
What should your Verse test matrix cover?
Use the following matrix to separate source, configuration and runtime evidence. The suggested failure cases are tests you should perform for your mechanic, not claims that Epic has run them for your project.
| Stage | Action | Evidence to capture | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build | Run Verse > Build Verse Code | Successful build and relevant Message Log or Output Log entries | Send the actual compiler diagnostic to the AI and make the smallest correction |
| Placement and wiring | Inspect the placed Verse device and its Details panel | Device exists in the level; each editable field names the intended instance | Place the device or assign the missing and incorrect references |
| Happy path | Launch Session, choose Start Game and perform the specified trigger | Visible behavior and expected log message occur | Check event subscription, trigger order, device settings and session freshness |
| Failure and edge path | Try an absent or differently configured reference, repeated triggers and relevant multi-player interactions | Defined fallback, warning or stable state rather than an unexplained failure | Add explicit guards or state handling, then rebuild and retest |
| After changes | Use Push Verse Changes for Verse-only edits or Push Changes when level/device edits are included | The updated behavior is observed in the active session | Push the correct update and repeat the full interaction |
Write the expected result before you play. “The barrier opens after the trigger and a log line names the player” is testable; “the script works” is not.
Can an AI agent test a Verse script for you?
An MCP-connected agent can perform supported editor actions and may interact with a play session, but you remain responsible for deciding whether the gameplay result is correct. Agent output, a successful compile and a visible in-game observation are three different forms of evidence.
Use an agent to automate repeatable mechanics such as opening a project, locating a Verse file, compiling it, checking connection or client logs and applying a small supported edit. Ask it to report each action and its result. Then personally confirm the trigger, the player-facing state and the relevant log entry in the Fortnite client.
Do not call a test “passing” merely because the agent returned no error. A runtime issue can arise from an unassigned device, an event that never fires, a stale session, an incorrect player assumption or a state transition that fails only on a second or simultaneous trigger.

Start with instantiation and wiring, then trace whether the event reaches the handler. Compilation cannot detect every runtime and configuration problem.
The Verse device is not in the level
Confirm that the compiled class was dragged into the current map. A source file in Verse Explorer has no effect until an instance is placed.

An editable reference is empty or points to the wrong object
Select the placed device and inspect every field in Details. Assign the exact Creative device instance expected by the code, then push the level change.
The event never reaches the handler
Add a temporary Print() at the earliest point you can observe, such as initialization or the event callback. Epic documents that Print() can appear in-game and in UEFN’s Output Log. If the first message never appears, investigate placement and lifecycle wiring before the downstream mechanic.
The handler runs but the result is wrong
Print the key state values and inspect whether a condition, option or device property prevents the action. Use PrintCallStack() when you need to trace the route to a problem.
The issue appears only during a session
Review runtime errors, logs and call stacks. Epic documents a Verse tab in the Content Service Portal with runtime-error categories and call stacks, retaining up to 30 days of reports. That is a retention limit, not a measurement of AI accuracy or script quality.
Remove noisy diagnostic prints after the behavior is understood, or replace them with the appropriate log-channel approach when you need less intrusive output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the common AI-and-UEFN failure modes?
Most failures come from a mismatch between generated assumptions and the project’s actual devices, events or session state.
- Generated a complete system instead of a small edit: revert and ask for one behavior at a time so each change has a clear test.
- Used a plausible but unavailable API: provide the compiler diagnostic and ask the AI to correct only that call or type.
- Subscribed to the wrong event: name the actual device and event in the prompt, then verify the subscription with a temporary log.
- Assumed an editable field auto-fills: assign it explicitly in Details.
- Built but tested an old session: use Push Verse Changes or Push Changes according to what changed, then repeat the trigger.
- Interpreted silence as success: define an observable result and a diagnostic message before running.
- Let an MCP agent make broad edits: keep changes reviewable, inspect the diff and save a known-good version before each iteration.
How should you iterate after the first successful test?
Change one behavior, rebuild, push the correct update and rerun the relevant happy and edge paths. Keep a short record of the prompt, changed file, build result, device assignments and observed session result.
- Save the working Verse file and note the level configuration that produced the expected behavior.
- Ask for the next smallest change, explicitly preserving the tested behavior.
- Review imports, event flow, editable references and state transitions again.
- Build with Verse > Build Verse Code.
- Push Verse Changes for source-only edits, or Push Changes when map or device properties changed.
- Retest the original trigger plus the new case. A new feature can regress an earlier event even when the new path works.
For multiplayer mechanics, include at least one interaction involving the relevant number of players and repeated or simultaneous triggers. For device-driven mechanics, vary the referenced device’s configuration so the script is not accidentally relying on one editor default.

What are the practical limits of UEFN MCP?
UEFN MCP is useful when editor context and tool actions matter, but it is not an autonomous, infallible test suite. Epic’s documentation identifies beta status, possible editor hitching during tool calls and compatibility limits with general Unreal MCP toolsets.
Keep the agent’s permissions and requested scope narrow. Ask it to show which file or device it changed, preserve your existing names and report build diagnostics verbatim. When a tool call stalls or the editor hitches, check the connection and client logs, then resume from a saved project state instead of issuing a chain of speculative edits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Developer Assistant remains the lower-setup route for explanations and drafts. MCP adds operational reach, not a guarantee that the agent understands your design or can judge whether a mechanic feels correct to players.
What does “tested” mean for an AI-written Verse change?
For this workflow, “tested” should mean that the project built, the device was placed and wired, the specified trigger was performed in a Fortnite session and the observed result matched a written expectation, including relevant logs. A generated answer is not a test, and a green build is only the first checkpoint.
Record failures as useful evidence: the exact trigger, session state, visible result, Output Log lines and any runtime call stack. Feed those facts back to the AI for a constrained correction, then repeat the same matrix. This keeps the agent accountable to observations instead of allowing confident wording to substitute for a gameplay check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I write Verse without installing VS Code?
UEFN’s supported workflow opens Verse files in the bundled VS Code integration, which supplies editing and language checks. You still need to run UEFN’s Verse > Build Verse Code command because editor diagnostics can miss project compiler errors.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does my Verse device appear in the project but not in the map?
Creating a Verse Device file only creates source and a class. After a successful build, you must drag an instance of that device into the level and configure its Details-panel references.
Where can I find errors after a Fortnite play session ends?
Review UEFN’s Output Log and the Fortnite in-game Log for messages from the session. Epic also documents runtime-error categories and call stacks in the Verse tab of the Content Service Portal, with reports retained for up to 30 days.
Do all Unreal MCP tools work with UEFN MCP?
No. Epic’s UEFN MCP documentation notes that general Unreal MCP toolsets are not all compatible. Use the capabilities and compatible-agent guidance documented for UEFN, and expect beta limitations such as possible editor hitching.
