Vader Immortal is worth playing for the feeling of standing inside Star Wars, not for a long or mechanically complex campaign. Across three short episodes, you play a smuggler pulled into Darth Vader’s world on Mustafar, meet memorable characters, wield a lightsaber at room scale and unlock extra challenges in the Lightsaber Dojo. The complete story lasts roughly two hours according to UploadVR, while the Dojo provides the replay value that the brief narrative cannot. The series is an unusually effective VR showcase, but its simple combat, constrained movement and short episodes make it closer to an interactive cinematic adventure than a full-length action game.
What is Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series?
Vader Immortal is a three-part, canon Star Wars virtual-reality adventure created by ILMxLAB and Lucasfilm in collaboration with Oculus Studios. You play a smuggler operating near Mustafar, the volcanic planet where Darth Vader maintains his fortress. The story is built around being physically present in Vader’s environment: you look around the fortress, interact with objects, handle weapons with motion controllers and meet characters at room scale.

Episode I introduces the setting, droid co-pilot ZO-E3 and lightsaber combat. Episode II expands the adventure with Force abilities and deeper exploration below Mustafar. Episode III brings the plot to its final confrontation and adds new blasters, skiff combat and a larger assault. Every episode includes a Lightsaber Dojo, an open-ended training mode in which you fight successive challenges, practice your weapon skills and unlock additional lightsaber hilts.
The series was designed around presence rather than traditional game length. Standing before Vader, turning your head to inspect his fortress or physically raising a lightsaber creates the strongest moments. The trade-off is that the scripted campaign leaves little room for the long-form exploration, progression systems or combat variety expected from a conventional action game.

What happens in each episode?
Episode I: the introduction to Vader’s world
Episode I establishes the smuggler premise and your relationship with ZO-E3 before bringing you into Vader’s orbit. Its central mechanical addition is the lightsaber, and its environments are built to make the first-person perspective feel meaningful: doors, consoles, props and characters occupy believable scale around you. Game Informer scored it 7.75/10, praising the story flow, detailed environments, the Vader encounter and Maya Rudolph’s performance as ZO-E3. The same review identified combat as the episode’s weak point and described the game as a satisfying introduction rather than a full-scale adventure.
Episode II: Force powers and deeper exploration
Episode II continues directly from the first chapter and adds Force powers, giving you more ways to interact with the environment and confront enemies. The narrative section is extremely short: Push Square said it barely reaches 30 minutes. That brevity makes the episode feel more like a bridge in the larger story than a self-contained campaign, although the additional abilities broaden the fantasy of being a Force user.

Episode III: the final assault
Episode III builds toward the series’ concluding confrontation. StarWars.com’s announcement highlighted new blasters, skiff combat and a larger final assault, while UploadVR called it the series’ best combat chapter and a mostly welcome ending. The review still noted pacing and brevity issues, so the finale delivers memorable set pieces without turning the trilogy into a lengthy action game.
How long does Vader Immortal last?
The complete scripted adventure is approximately two hours, according to UploadVR. Episode II’s narrative alone is reported by Push Square to be under 30 minutes, illustrating how unevenly the time is distributed between chapters. The trilogy’s value therefore depends on whether you want a concentrated VR story or a campaign with dozens of hours of progression.

The Lightsaber Dojo is the main answer to the short story. It is available in every episode, uses an open-ended training structure and lets you unlock different lightsaber hilts as you improve. Dojo sessions can extend playtime considerably for players who enjoy repeating combat challenges, experimenting with motion-controlled attacks or chasing higher performance. It does not, however, add a second story campaign or the kind of character, loot or mission progression found in a larger action title.
How does the combat and movement work?
Combat is intentionally accessible. You physically swing and block with a lightsaber, use Force powers in Episode II and handle blasters and other encounters in Episode III. The design prioritizes the sensation of holding Star Wars equipment over deep systems, enemy variety or elaborate combos. That simplicity is why reviewers can describe the lightsaber handling as satisfying while also identifying combat as the series’ main limitation.

Movement and comfort options are provided on both VR versions, but the experience is not a free-roaming simulation of Mustafar. Push Square specifically noted constrained movement and limitations in PlayStation Move tracking. Players sensitive to motion should use the available comfort settings, clear a safe play area and follow the headset’s guardian or boundary guidance before starting. Room-scale moments are among the series’ highlights, so adequate physical space improves the experience even though every scene does not require a large area.
What do critics and players think?
The overall response is positive about atmosphere and mixed about value. Metacritic’s page state in 2026 lists a critic score of 69/100 from 20 critics and a user score of 6.2/10 from 21 ratings. Those numbers fit the pattern in individual reviews: praise for presentation, sound, presence and selected set pieces, alongside reservations about length, pacing and straightforward combat.

- Push Square: 6/10 for the PlayStation VR package. The review highlighted magical moments, satisfying lightsaber handling, a strong soundtrack and several comfort options, while criticizing the short narrative sections and the way each PlayStation episode launches as a separate game.
- Game Informer: 7.75/10 for Episode I. Andrew Reiner praised the story flow, detailed environments, the Vader encounter and Maya Rudolph’s voice performance as ZO-E3, but called combat the weak spot.
- UploadVR: 4/5 for Episode III. The review regarded the finale as a mostly welcome conclusion with the trilogy’s strongest combat and memorable highs, while still pointing to pacing and brevity concerns.
The strongest consensus is that Vader Immortal succeeds as a showcase for VR presence. Ben Snow, the series director, said, “Vader Immortal has shown that there is an appetite for this type of storytelling in virtual reality.” That statement describes the series’ ambition accurately: it is built to make a familiar film universe feel physically immediate, not to replace a long traditional Star Wars game.
Which platform and edition should you choose?
The choice is primarily between standalone Meta Quest hardware and the original PlayStation VR setup. Quest lets you play without a console, camera or external tracking hardware, while the PS4 edition bundles all three episodes in one store listing but requires older accessories. The following table separates the practical differences.

What hardware and storage do you need?
Quest players need one of the supported Meta headsets. The official support listing names the original Meta Quest, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 3. PlayStation players need a PS4, the original PlayStation VR headset, a PlayStation Camera and a PlayStation Move motion controller; a modern headset setup cannot be assumed to work with the PS4 edition.

Each episode is approximately 5GB. Installing the complete trilogy therefore requires at least 15GB of available storage, before allowing room for system files or other games. Keep additional free space available for updates and normal headset or console operation.
- Confirm the platform. Check that your Quest model appears on the official support list, or verify that your PS4 has the original PS VR accessories.
- Check storage. Reserve at least 15GB for all three episodes and leave headroom for updates.
- Prepare the play area. Clear obstacles, set the headset boundary and make sure your controller straps are secure.
- Use comfort settings before starting. Select the movement and turning options that reduce discomfort rather than waiting until motion feels unpleasant.
- Start with Episode I. The episodes form one story, and the first chapter teaches the lightsaber interactions used later.
Is Vader Immortal worth it for different kinds of players?
It is a good fit if you want Star Wars presence
Choose the series if your priority is the sensation of being inside Vader’s fortress, meeting characters at eye level and physically using a lightsaber. The visual detail, soundtrack and room-scale interactions deliver the moments that reviewers consistently praised. It is also a strong demonstration for someone new to VR who wants a recognizable setting and a guided experience rather than a complex simulation.

It is a good fit if you enjoy replayable challenge modes
The Dojo gives each episode a reason to revisit it after the story ends. Unlockable hilts and repeatable combat challenges can make the package more satisfying for players who enjoy practicing motion-controlled swordplay. The value is higher when you view the Dojo as a central mode rather than a small bonus.
It is a poor fit if you expect a long campaign
Players seeking a 10-hour-plus action game, extensive exploration or deep character progression should lower their expectations. The complete narrative is roughly two hours, Episode II is especially brief and combat remains deliberately simple. The trilogy’s structure is closer to three connected VR episodes than to one large adventure.

Is Vader Immortal worth buying?
Vader Immortal is worth buying when cinematic Star Wars immersion is your main goal and you accept a short campaign. Its best scenes make a compelling case for VR: Vader feels physically imposing, the environments reward looking around and the lightsaber has a convincing sense of presence. The Dojo adds repeatable activity and unlocks, but it cannot erase the trilogy’s limited story length or straightforward combat.
On Quest, buy the episodes individually if you prefer a lower initial commitment and already own compatible standalone hardware. On PS4, the trilogy listing is the simpler package if you have the required original PS VR equipment, although regional store restrictions and Move tracking should be checked first. The final recommendation is therefore audience-specific: excellent as a concentrated Star Wars VR showcase, less convincing as a substitute for a long-form action game.

Can I play Vader Immortal without a PlayStation console?
Yes. The series is available on supported Meta Quest headsets, including Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro and Quest 3. The Quest editions run on the standalone headset, while the PS4 version requires the original PlayStation VR hardware and accessories.
Do I need to play every episode in order?
Playing in order is recommended because the story and abilities build from Episode I through Episode III. The first chapter introduces the smuggler, ZO-E3 and lightsaber controls, so starting there also gives you the intended tutorial flow.
Is the Lightsaber Dojo multiplayer?
The Dojo is presented as an open-ended training mode for practicing and replaying combat challenges. The supplied platform descriptions do not establish an online multiplayer feature, so it should be approached as a solo mode.
How much free space should I leave for updates?
The three episodes total approximately 15GB based on the stated 5GB size per episode. Leave additional storage beyond that minimum because system files and future updates also need room.
