| Game | Best solo for | World | Solo and multiplayer scope | Main solo drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enshrouded | Building, terraforming, flexible action-RPG combat and offline play | Hand-crafted | Playable solo and offline; cooperative play supports up to 16 players | Its design still feels cooperative-first, and the game is at its best with friends according to developer Keen Games |
| Valheim | Exploration, sailing, procedural discovery, biome progression and boss preparation | Procedurally generated | Solo or with up to nine other players | One player handles hauling, travel, crafting, farming and combat, making progression slower |
| RuneScape: Dragonwilds | Quest-led progression, explicit objectives and playing across current consoles | Hand-crafted | Solo or in a team of up to four | Hunger, thirst and required sleep create the heaviest recurring maintenance burden |
These distinctions matter more than a simple “best game” ranking. A player who dislikes inventory logistics may find Valheim exhausting, while someone who wants a relaxed creative sandbox may consider Dragonwilds unnecessarily demanding. The right choice depends on whether you want your solo time organized around construction, discovery or survival routine.
What each game is trying to be
Valheim: an expedition loop built around preparation
Valheim casts you into a procedurally generated tenth world containing forests, mountains, seas, settlements and biome-specific hazards. You gather materials, craft weapons and armor, establish bases, farm, prepare food and mead, travel by ship and defeat the boss associated with each biome.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The central solo rhythm is preparation followed by an expedition. You improve equipment and supplies at home, choose how much cargo to carry, travel into a dangerous region, establish a foothold and return with resources for the next tier. Boss encounters give that process direction without turning the game into a linear campaign.
Procedural generation makes each new world a fresh geographic problem. Shorelines, resource routes and the distance between useful locations vary, so a successful solo player learns to plan transport and safe staging areas rather than relying on a fixed walkthrough.
Enshrouded: an action RPG inside a construction sandbox
Enshrouded is a cooperative survival-crafting action RPG set in a kingdom consumed by the Shroud. It can be played solo and offline, and its strongest differentiator is the freedom to shape both your character and your home.
The game combines a large skill tree with traversal tools, NPC rescue and settlement building. Rescued characters become villagers who unlock services and crafting possibilities, turning a base from a storage box into a functioning settlement. Terrain shaping lets you alter the ground itself, while a broad catalog of construction pieces and furniture supports detailed interiors and large architectural projects.
Its survival framing is more forgiving in presentation than Dragonwilds. You still explore dangerous areas, gather resources and improve equipment, but the game emphasizes movement, combat, building and character development rather than constant meters demanding attention.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds: a guided survival-crafting adventure
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a separate open-world survival-crafting game set on Ashenfall, not an extension of the RuneScape MMORPG. Its regions and biomes are hand-crafted, and its structure is more quest-led than the other two games.

The trade-off is traditional survival pressure. The comparison published by PC Gamer on October 15, 2026 describes hunger and thirst as enabled by default and sleep as required. Those settings can change with updates, so check current patch notes or the in-game options before starting a new world.

Solo and offline support
All three games are viable for a lone player, but “solo” does not mean the same thing in each one.
- Enshrouded is the clearest offline choice. Keen Games explicitly states that it can be played solo and offline. You can progress without coordinating a server or waiting for other players.
- Valheim supports a solo world as well as cooperative sessions. Its systems do not require a party, but many tasks become faster when several players divide hauling, construction, farming and combat.
- Dragonwilds supports solo play and is built around a smaller team ceiling, so its quest structure and encounter scale are easier to follow alone than a game designed for a large group.
Offline support is especially important if you play on a laptop during travel, have unreliable connectivity or want a persistent world that is entirely under your control. Enshrouded is the only one of the three whose cited FAQ explicitly promises that offline mode.
World design: procedural discovery or authored direction?
Why Valheim favors explorers
Valheim’s procedural world is its defining solo advantage. Every map asks you to rediscover coastlines, locate biomes, establish routes and decide when a distant resource is worth the risk. Sailing makes geography an active system rather than a loading screen: a harbor, a ship and a safe return route can matter as much as a weapon upgrade.
That variability creates replay value, but it also produces friction. A resource may be far from your main base, a swamp expedition can become a corpse-recovery mission and transporting heavy materials can consume an entire play session. Solo players who enjoy planning and gradual mastery tend to regard this as the point; players seeking quick upgrades may see it as downtime.
Why hand-crafted worlds favor quest followers
Enshrouded and Dragonwilds use hand-crafted worlds according to PC Gamer’s comparison. Their designers can place landmarks, encounters and objectives deliberately, making the path through a region easier to read.
In Enshrouded, authored spaces support the game’s rescue-and-build loop. You can leave the critical path to gather materials or construct a settlement, but the world’s landmarks and character quests provide context for your next destination.
Dragonwilds uses that authored structure to reinforce its quest-led identity. If you prefer a sequence of objectives, named regions and a stronger sense of “the next task,” its map is less demanding than Valheim’s open-ended geography.
Building and terraforming
For construction, Enshrouded is the clear first choice. PC Gamer’s comparison identifies it as the deepest building game of the three, and its toolset supports more than placing walls on a flat plot.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Enshrouded’s construction edge
- Terrain shaping lets you excavate, raise or level ground rather than adapting every design to the landscape.
- A large set of building pieces supports custom proportions, roofs, towers, stairs and interior layouts.
- Furniture and decorative elements make finished rooms feel designed rather than merely functional.
- NPC villagers give settlements a practical purpose in addition to visual appeal.
This combination makes Enshrouded particularly strong for solo players who treat construction as the main game. You can spend an evening refining a hall, workshop or village without needing a team to make the project worthwhile.
Valheim’s practical building
Valheim’s building is closely tied to survival logistics. A base is a shelter, workshop, storage network, farm and staging point for boss expeditions. You can create impressive structures, but the motivation is usually functional first: keep a portal or ship route safe, organize materials and prepare for the next biome.
Recommended Free Tools
Because the world is procedural, the best building site is often a compromise between scenery, access to resources and transport. Solo builders must also gather every structural material themselves, so ambitious projects can compete directly with equipment upgrades.
Dragonwilds’ construction role
Dragonwilds includes survival-crafting construction, but the available evidence does not establish a comparable catalog of terraforming or decorative depth. Its design emphasis is quest progression and traditional survival management, so choose it for the adventure framework rather than assuming it matches Enshrouded’s building toolkit.
Survival pressure and daily maintenance
| Pressure | Valheim | Enshrouded | Dragonwilds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food and preparation | Food and mead are central to preparing for biome travel and bosses | Survival systems support the action-RPG loop without dominating the experience | Traditional survival management is a defining part of the experience |
| Hunger and thirst | Not characterized in the supplied comparison as the primary recurring burden | Not characterized as the primary recurring burden | Hunger and thirst are described as enabled by default in PC Gamer’s October 15, 2026 comparison; settings may change |
| Sleep | Not identified as a required routine in the comparison | Not identified as a required routine in the comparison | Sleep is described as required in the comparison; verify current rules after updates |
| Solo workload | High logistical load from hauling, travel, inventory and preparation | Lower routine pressure, leaving more time for building and combat | Highest recurring maintenance load of the three in the cited comparison |
Valheim’s pressure is strategic rather than purely punitive. Food, mead, equipment durability, transport and corpse recovery all influence whether an expedition succeeds, but you can reduce risk through preparation. The game rewards players who enjoy turning a checklist into a successful boss run.
Enshrouded is the least demanding choice if you want survival flavor without letting meters interrupt every activity. Its challenge comes more from combat, exploration and deciding how to spend skill points and materials.

Dragonwilds asks you to maintain the character as well as advance the story. Carrying food and water, planning sleep and handling the consequences of neglect can make a short session feel more structured, but it also means less time spent building or wandering freely.
Progression, quests and character development
Best for self-directed progression: Valheim
Valheim gives you a broad direction through its biome bosses, but the route between milestones is largely yours. You decide when to expand a base, which resources to prioritize, how much to explore and whether to attempt a boss immediately or improve your preparation first.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This is excellent for players who enjoy setting personal objectives. It is less suitable if you want the game to identify a single next mission at all times.
Best for build experimentation: Enshrouded
Enshrouded’s large skill tree lets a solo character develop a preferred combat and utility style. You can adjust your build as you unlock abilities, while rescued NPCs broaden crafting and settlement options.
The result is progression that feels like an action RPG rather than a sequence of survival technology tiers. Exploration, combat and construction feed into one another: a new ability changes how you move through the world, and a rescued villager can change what you can make at home.
Best for explicit objectives: Dragonwilds
Dragonwilds is the strongest fit when quest structure is a deciding factor. Its hand-crafted regions and guided objectives reduce the ambiguity that can accompany a sandbox. You can still gather, craft and explore, but the story supplies a more visible spine for the experience.
Which game is easiest to play solo?
Enshrouded is the easiest overall for most solo players. Offline support, flexible character development, traversal tools and lighter routine survival pressure let one person focus on combat, exploration or construction without constantly covering every role in a party.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDragonwilds is easiest to follow. Its quest-led structure tells you what to pursue, and its smaller team target keeps the design readable. However, the hunger, thirst and sleep requirements make it more demanding to maintain from moment to moment.
Valheim is easiest for players who enjoy preparation. It has the steepest logistical burden, but its systems are consistent: gather, craft, eat, sail, establish a foothold and challenge the biome boss. If that loop sounds satisfying rather than tedious, its difficulty becomes a source of ownership over every victory.

How to choose in common solo-player situations
Choose Enshrouded when…
- You want to play offline or avoid dependence on a multiplayer server.
- Your ideal session is building, decorating, reshaping land or improving a settlement.
- You prefer action-RPG combat and a skill tree over strict survival maintenance.
- You want freedom to change direction without losing a clear sense of character growth.
Choose Valheim when…
- You want every new world to feel geographically unknown.
- Sailing, route planning and remote outposts sound as appealing as fighting.
- You enjoy preparing food, mead, equipment and transport before a boss attempt.
- You prefer self-directed goals and accept that solo hauling and travel take time.
Choose Dragonwilds when…
- You want quests and story objectives to guide your next activity.
- You need a game available on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 or Xbox Series X|S.
- You like explicit hunger, thirst and sleep systems as part of the challenge.
- You prefer a smaller cooperative design target and a hand-crafted world.
Solo strategies that prevent the common frustrations
Valheim: reduce the logistics tax
- Build small, purpose-specific outposts near dangerous biomes instead of hauling every resource back to your first base.
- Plan ship routes and safe harbors before collecting heavy materials.
- Keep a dedicated food and mead stockpile so a surprise boss attempt does not interrupt preparation.
- Use storage labels and a return route before entering a new region; inventory confusion is more costly when no teammate can retrieve forgotten supplies.
- Treat corpse recovery as a planned expedition with backup equipment rather than an impulsive rush.
Enshrouded: make the flexibility work for you
- Rescue NPCs early so your settlement expands alongside your character rather than becoming a late-game construction project.
- Use terrain shaping to create level foundations and efficient workshops before decorating.
- Spend skill points around one primary combat style, then add utility abilities that improve traversal and gathering.
- Keep separate storage for building materials and adventure supplies; the game’s construction depth can otherwise bury essential gear.
- Use offline play to pause whenever you need to redesign a base or reorganize a settlement.
Dragonwilds: schedule maintenance around quests
- Read the current survival settings and patch notes before committing to a long-term world, because default hunger, thirst and sleep rules are update-sensitive.
- Carry enough food and water for the next objective rather than only the immediate encounter.
- Plan sleep around quest travel so the required rest does not interrupt a dangerous route.
- Use the quest log as your primary planning tool, then gather nearby materials while moving toward the objective.
- Reserve a short portion of each session for replenishment; ignoring maintenance can turn a clear quest route into an avoidable retreat.
How long-term value differs
Valheim’s replay value comes primarily from procedural worlds and the changing logistics of each run. A new seed can alter the order and distance of discoveries, making exploration itself a reason to begin again. Its long-term appeal is strongest when you enjoy mastering systems rather than consuming a fixed story.
Enshrouded offers repeat value through construction projects, character builds and the freedom to approach its authored spaces at your own pace. Solo players who create personal building goals may find practically unlimited reasons to return, even after the main objectives are familiar.

Dragonwilds’ long-term value is tied more closely to its quest framework, survival tuning and future updates. Jagex reported more than 1.5 million copies sold during the game’s 18-month Steam Early Access period in 2026, but that figure is not a comparable player-count measure for either Valheim or Enshrouded. Because Dragonwilds launched across additional consoles on September 15, 2026, platform support and post-launch changes are especially important to monitor.
Final recommendation
Buy Enshrouded for the best all-around solo experience when building, offline play and flexible action-RPG progression are your priorities. Buy Valheim when the attraction is discovering an unpredictable world, sailing between biomes and earning boss victories through careful preparation. Buy RuneScape: Dragonwilds when you want the clearest quest path, traditional survival meters and the widest documented console availability.
None of the three is a universal winner. Enshrouded is the safest recommendation for a player uncertain about solo survival games; Valheim is the most distinctive expedition sandbox; Dragonwilds is the most structured and maintenance-heavy adventure. Match that design philosophy to the way you want to spend your evenings, and the choice becomes straightforward.
