Valor Mortis Review: Is This the Most Refreshing Soulslike in Years?

Valor Mortis has a clear point of difference: it puts Soulslike melee combat in first person and sets it in a plague-ravaged alternate Napoleonic Europe. That makes it an intriguing prospect, not an automatic genre reinvention. The available evidence is still pre-release: a preview praised how the perspective translated to deliberate combat but flagged uneven difficulty and frustrating chapter-ending bosses. The game was scheduled to launch October 13, 2026; these details and the preview are not a post-launch review or firsthand verdict.

Is Valor Mortis actually refreshing?

Its strongest claim to freshness is perspective. Valor Mortis is a first-person action Soulslike from One More Level, the studio behind Ghostrunner. Instead of watching William from behind, players see the corrupted world through the eyes of a resurrected soldier. One More Level brand manager Michał Azarewicz described that as the main distinction from most games in the genre: “The main difference between Valor Mortis and others is that you play in the first person, not in the third, as in most games in the souls-like genre.” VGTimes interview

That shift could make combat more immediate: threats approach from the edges of the screen, and judging distance or spotting an attack may feel different without a pulled-back camera. But novelty only helps if the game keeps enemies and their attacks readable. The studio has said it retained familiar Soulslike conventions so players would not have to relearn the whole genre. Whether the first-person view makes those conventions more immersive or less clear is a question the preview evidence does not settle.

The setting supplies a second unusual ingredient. In the game’s alternate history, Napoleon won at Waterloo and expanded his power through supernatural means. William, an English soldier in Napoleon’s International Legion, dies and wakes amid plague, mutated soldiers, and a conspiracy. That premise combines recognizable period weapons and military imagery with supernatural horror; it is fictional alternate history, not a claim about actual events. The official Steam listing describes the player as a former soldier of Napoleon’s army returned from death.

How do combat and progression work?

The announced combat mix is built around stamina, close-range weapons, parries, and supernatural abilities. The publisher’s gameplay overview describes light and heavy attacks, parries and counterattacks, and weapon choice as parts of a deliberate approach to different enemies.

System What has been announced
Weapons A heavy, slow Claymore, a longer-range Musket, and William’s pistol are among the named weapons. The launch announcement also describes dual-wielding Napoleonic weapons such as rapiers and flintlock pistols.
Transmutations Left-hand supernatural abilities for damage, buffs, debuffs, and traversal. Fire burns enemies; Shield absorbs damage before releasing a shockwave; Grapple uses points in the environment.
Catalysts Spent at Lanterns to improve health, stamina, and parry. The publisher says they are left at the place William dies.
Ambers Equipped at Lanterns to customize a build. The publisher describes them separately from Catalysts.

The systems suggest several levers for shaping encounters: choosing a weapon, managing stamina, timing a parry, and deciding when to use a Transmutation. The sources do not establish how those options balance in the final game, or whether firearms and supernatural powers complement melee rather than overshadow it.

Progression uses recognizable genre touchstones. A studio representative has described stamina recovery, bonfire-like checkpoints, and recovering resources at the death site. The publisher’s account specifically names Catalysts and Ambers, so those systems should not be treated as interchangeable or assumed to work like another game’s currencies. The launch announcement also promises Metroidvania-style exploration and movement for evading enemies and finding environmental secrets; those are announced features, not independently verified assessments of the finished levels.

What does the pre-release preview say about difficulty?

Game Informer’s September 21, 2026 preview is the most concrete independent play evidence available here. Its writer reported spending more than 15 hours with a preview build across the first four chapters. The preview said first-person action worked surprisingly well for slower, deliberate Soulslike combat, while criticizing the difficulty as uneven and the chapter-ending boss fights as frustrating. Read the preview.

Legion Wargames: Aces of Valor, Solitaire Board Game for Adults 18+
  • Item is intended for adults, over the age of 18. This is not a child’s toy.
  • Solitaire Play
  • 22 x34 Map
  • 300+ Counters
  • Unit Size: 1 Plane

Those criticisms matter because difficulty consistency and boss readability are central to whether a first-person Soulslike feels demanding or simply unfair. But the preview covers a limited section of a pre-release build. It is evidence of the writer’s experience with those chapters, not a conclusion about the full game, every platform, or any changes made before launch.

Steam showed the game as unavailable when checked on October 12, before its scheduled unlock. That status is a dated pre-launch snapshot, not current availability information. Store pages are the appropriate place to confirm whether the game is available now, its live regional price, and any changes to the announced schedule. The available sources do not establish launch-day performance, a post-launch patch record, a review aggregate, or a full-game assessment.

What should a prospective player weigh?

  • For a different camera perspective: first-person melee is the clearest reason to pay attention. Its success depends on attack readability and spatial awareness, which remain open questions in the available preview.
  • For combat variety: the announced combination of melee weapons, a pistol, parries, stamina, and Transmutations offers multiple tools, but their final balance has not been established.
  • For setting and exploration: alternate Napoleonic history, plague horror, supernatural powers, and promised interconnected exploration give the game a distinctive frame. How well the levels deliver on that promise requires a full-game assessment.
  • For difficulty: the preview’s uneven challenge and frustrating bosses are a specific caution, though its first-four-chapters scope prevents treating them as a definitive judgment on the whole game.

Valor Mortis has a credible hook and a promising combination of systems, but calling it the most refreshing Soulslike in years would go beyond the evidence available before launch. The first-person perspective is genuinely distinctive; whether it supports consistently fair combat across the full game is the test that matters.
