Why some reviewers call it a genre hit
Positive coverage, as summarized by ShowGamer, emphasizes combat that feels fluid or satisfying, particularly the combination of melee weapons and supernatural powers. The first-person perspective gives that combat a distinct identity, while level design, dark atmosphere, and the supernatural Napoleonic setting add to the appeal.
For players drawn to soulslikes for demanding encounters and a strong sense of place, those elements appear to be the game’s strongest case. The reported praise is about the feel and atmosphere of the experience rather than evidence that every system or stretch of the campaign works equally well.

Why other critics were disappointed
More critical reviews cited bugs, limited enemy variety, and weapons and abilities that do not develop enough. ShowGamer also summarized complaints about inconsistent difficulty and a story that establishes atmosphere more successfully than narrative depth. Some reviewers reportedly found the campaign’s later stretch less effective than its opening.
Those criticisms matter most to players who expect a soulslike to sustain its challenge through varied enemies, meaningful progression, and consistent pacing. The roundup does not quantify bug frequency or identify specific platforms or patches, so it cannot establish how widespread technical problems were or whether they have since changed.

How to judge whether it suits you
The split reviews point to a practical way to assess Valor Mortis: focus on which parts of a soulslike matter most to you, rather than treating the aggregate score as a verdict.
- Combat: The strongest reported appeal is first-person melee paired with supernatural powers. If that combination is your priority, the positive reception may be persuasive.
- Setting and atmosphere: The supernatural Napoleonic backdrop and dark environments are recurring strengths in the roundup.
- Stability: Bugs were a recurring criticism, but the report does not provide platform-specific details or establish the game’s current technical state.
- Variety and progression: Limited enemy variety and underdeveloped weapons and abilities may be a drawback if you want a broad roster and substantial build growth.
- Challenge and pacing: Reports of uneven difficulty and a less effective later campaign stretch suggest the experience may not maintain a consistent rhythm.
- Story: The roundup indicates that atmosphere may be stronger than narrative depth; prioritize other strengths if a substantial story is essential for you.
Because the report is dated October 12, 2026, its score snapshot and descriptions of technical issues should not be treated as a current status check. Look at up-to-date platform listings and individual reviews before making a purchase decision.

Verdict: hit or disappointment?
Valor Mortis is both, depending on what you want from the genre. Its combat and setting give it a distinctive pitch, and the highest scores in ShowGamer’s roundup reflect reviewers who responded to those strengths. The low end of the score range reflects concerns about bugs, variety, progression, difficulty, and narrative depth. The evidence supports a genuinely split critical reception—not a consensus that it is either an unqualified hit or a failure.
