If VALORANT opens to a black screen before you reach the menu, start with the low-risk launch fixes: fully close Riot Client and VALORANT, restart them, update your graphics driver and Windows, and reset any NVIDIA or AMD graphics-control overrides. If that fails, test for background-program and firewall conflicts, use Riot Client’s repair option, and reinstall the game. Reinstall Vanguard only when the failure includes a failed-launch or Vanguard-related error. A black screen that appears only after the game has loaded follows a different path involving the dedicated GPU, driver cleanup, overclocking, and display troubleshooting.
Riot’s support guidance treats a black screen as a symptom with several possible causes—not proof of one bad patch, driver version, Vanguard installation, or hardware failure. The timing of the failure, whether audio continues, and whether other games or the Windows desktop are affected determine which branch to follow.

What does the timing of the black screen tell you?
First establish whether the display goes black immediately at launch or only after VALORANT has successfully loaded. Riot documents those as different problems, so applying the wrong branch can waste time.

Write down when the problem began, whether it followed a VALORANT, Windows, or driver update, whether sound continues, and whether another game shows the same behavior. Those details make the later support request much more useful.

How do I fix a black screen before VALORANT reaches the menu?
Work through these checks in order. Stop when the game launches normally, but keep notes on each change so you can undo a setting that was not responsible.
1. Fully close Riot Client and VALORANT, then launch once
Exit VALORANT and Riot Client rather than leaving the client minimized in the notification area. Start Riot Client again and launch VALORANT one time. Riot places a close-and-restart attempt at the beginning of its failed-launch guidance because a temporary client or update state can prevent the game from starting correctly.
If the screen remains black, do not repeatedly launch the game in a loop. Move to the driver and operating-system checks below, and record whether Riot displays an error message.
2. Confirm the computer meets VALORANT’s minimum requirements
Riot’s crash guidance lists minimum requirements as an early check. A machine can open the client while still failing when the game initializes its graphics environment. Compare your Windows edition and graphics hardware with Riot’s current requirements for the installed game version; the support guidance does not establish one universal hardware fault from a black screen alone.
3. Identify the graphics processor with DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Use Windows’ built-in diagnostic tool before downloading a driver:
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
dxdiagand press Enter. - Allow the tool to finish checking system information.
- Open the Display (or graphics) tab and note the GPU manufacturer and model.
Use that information to choose the current driver from the GPU manufacturer—AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel. Install the driver intended for your Windows version and graphics model, then restart Windows before trying VALORANT again. Riot identifies outdated graphics software as a potential source of launch failures, black screens, freezes, and crashes.

Open Settings → Windows Update, check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Riot links VALORANT’s graphics and hardware interaction to current operating-system and DirectX components, so a current GPU driver by itself may not resolve an outdated Windows graphics stack.

After the restart, run dxdiag again if you need to verify that the system is reporting normally. Do not infer that a particular DirectX version is defective from the black screen; the documented action is to bring Windows and its graphics components up to date.
5. Remove custom NVIDIA or AMD graphics overrides
Open the graphics-control application for your GPU and restore VALORANT-related 3D or gaming settings to their defaults. Custom profiles, forced anti-aliasing, latency modes, frame limits, scaling choices, and similar overrides can change how a game initializes, but a black screen does not identify which setting is responsible.
Use the application’s Restore defaults, Reset, or equivalent control rather than changing many individual options at once. Restart the game after applying the reset so the result is clear.

6. If you can reach the menu, temporarily lower graphics settings
Some systems display a black screen only during a transition into the game, while the menu remains usable. If you can see the menu, temporarily choose lower graphics settings and test at the default display mode. Riot recommends reducing graphics settings when the game is able to reach its menus; this step is not available when the screen is black before any menu appears.
What should I do if a background program or firewall blocks launch?
Riot says failed launches can result from background programs interfering with the client or game. Test that possibility without permanently removing security software.
Perform a Windows clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with nonessential services and startup programs disabled. Use Windows’ System Configuration and startup controls to disable non-Microsoft services and startup items, restart, and launch VALORANT. If the black screen disappears, re-enable items in groups and restart between tests until the conflicting program is identified.
Do not leave the computer permanently stripped of services just because the game launches once. Restore normal startup after testing, then update or reconfigure the specific conflicting application. If the symptom remains during a clean boot, background software is less likely to be the immediate trigger.

Check firewall permissions
Review the Windows firewall rules and allow Riot Client and VALORANT to communicate when prompted. A rule that blocks the client can leave the game unable to complete its launch or update sequence. Keep the firewall enabled while testing; the goal is to correct an application rule, not to run the computer unprotected.
If you use additional security software with its own firewall or application-control layer, check whether it has quarantined, blocked, or isolated Riot components. Record any exception you create so it can be removed if it has no effect.
Consider DevOverrideEnable only when the failed-launch guidance applies
Riot’s failed-launch article includes disabling DevOverrideEnable when that value is present and relevant to the error. Treat this as a targeted branch, not a universal black-screen cure. If Riot’s instructions point to it, search the Windows Registry for that value, change it only as directed, restart Windows, and test again.
Registry changes can affect Windows behavior. Export or otherwise back up the relevant registry state first, and do not delete unrelated values because the screen is black. If you do not see the value or you have no failed-launch indication, continue with the other branches instead.

Repair is the lower-disruption option when Riot Client offers it. Reinstalling is appropriate when repair does not correct corrupted or outdated files.
Use Riot Client’s repair option first
Open Riot Client’s settings, select VALORANT, and choose Repair if that option is available in your client build. Let the verification process finish, restart Riot Client if requested, and test the game. The exact label or location can vary by client version, so use the repair control shown in your installation rather than downloading an unrelated repair utility.
Reinstall VALORANT if files remain damaged
If repair reports problems, cannot complete, or the black screen continues, uninstall VALORANT through Windows’ installed-app controls, restart the computer, and install the current game client again. Reinstalling replaces game files; it does not by itself prove that the graphics driver, firewall, or another program was not involved.

Before uninstalling, note your Riot account and any settings you may want to reproduce. After installation, test at default graphics settings before restoring custom profiles or overclocking so you have a clean baseline.
Should I reinstall Vanguard for a black screen?
Only use the Vanguard branch when the failure includes a failed-launch message or a symptom that specifically implicates Vanguard. Riot’s guidance does not say that every black screen is caused by its anti-cheat component.
- In Windows’ installed-app settings, select Riot Vanguard and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows. This restart is part of the removal process.
- Launch VALORANT again. Riot’s client should prompt for or perform Vanguard’s reinstallation.
- Restart again if the client requests it, then test the game before changing other graphics settings.
If the same black screen appears without a Vanguard or failed-launch error, return to the driver, Windows, clean-boot, firewall, and repair branches instead of repeatedly reinstalling Vanguard.

Riot’s October 22, 2026 guidance treats a display that turns black after successful loading as a separate symptom. Use this path when you can confirm that VALORANT reached the game and only then lost its picture.
Select the dedicated GPU
On a system with integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm that VALORANT is assigned to the dedicated GPU through Windows graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control application. A game selecting the unexpected adapter can produce display problems even when the client itself opens.

Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the current driver for the GPU identified with dxdiag. Riot specifically connects outdated graphics drivers with black screens and other visual failures. Restart after installation and test before applying any custom control-panel profile.
Temporarily disable overclocking
Return CPU, GPU, memory, and related performance tuning to stock settings for a test. This is a diagnostic step, not a finding that overclocking caused the problem. If the display remains stable at stock settings, reintroduce changes one at a time so you can identify the setting that destabilizes the game.

Cleanly reinstall the graphics driver with DDU
If a normal driver update does not help, Riot recommends a clean driver reinstall using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU). Follow the current DDU procedure carefully, install the correct driver for your GPU, restart Windows, and test VALORANT before restoring overlays or vendor profiles. A clean reinstall is more disruptive than a standard update, so reserve it for persistent post-load display failures.
Repair the Riot Client or reinstall the game
For a continuing post-load black screen, use Riot Client’s repair option where available. If repair fails, reinstall VALORANT as described above. These steps address damaged client or game files while the dedicated-GPU and driver checks address the display path.

Escalate when the appropriate branch has not restored the display. Include the exact timing—before loading or after the game appears—plus whether audio continues, whether the desktop or other games are affected, and whether an error names Riot Client or Vanguard.
- Windows version and whether Windows was recently updated.
- GPU manufacturer and model from
dxdiag. - When the problem began and any VALORANT, driver, or Windows change immediately before it.
- Every troubleshooting step already attempted, including driver resets, clean boot, firewall changes, repair, reinstall, or Vanguard removal.
- The logs Riot requests with your Player Support ticket.
Describe what you see rather than assigning a cause. “Black screen before the menu with audio still playing” is more actionable than “Vanguard is broken,” because Riot’s documented causes include files, drivers, and background programs as well as anti-cheat-related launch failures.
Which fixes are most likely to help?
For a true startup black screen, the practical order is restart, identify and update the GPU driver, update Windows and DirectX, reset graphics-control overrides, test a clean boot and firewall rules, repair or reinstall the game, and use the Vanguard branch only for a matching failed-launch error. For a black screen after the game has loaded, begin with dedicated-GPU selection, Windows and driver updates, temporary removal of overclocking, and then a DDU-based clean driver reinstall.
No single step is guaranteed because the symptom is shared by several failure modes. Keeping the startup and during-game branches separate prevents unnecessary Vanguard removal and gives support the evidence needed to narrow the cause.

Can a VALORANT black screen damage my monitor or graphics card?
